Strength:

Good video and audio quality,(when it works properly!) progressive scan

Weakness:

Not heavy enough for a boat anchor.

Not a bad player...WHEN IT WORKS!!!!! frequent lock ups and chapter skips on flawless DVD''s ,very annoying. It has some great features... but obviously isnt enough to make up for the frequent errors. Sony should have spent a little more time on this player. This is not like them. I can easily sum it up by saying steer clear of this product.

This product is terrible. I always loved Sony, and have many Sony products, but I have used this dvd player about 20 times in the past year, and just now is the dam thing given me hell. I believe there is some sort of power short. There are no blown fuses(which is wierd) but the player only stays on for a couple of seconds before turning off. I tried this on many different outlets. Occasionally the system will boot up a dvd and start a movie and the video will skip like mad then the system will automatically power off. The disc drive doesnt always open. Any help? chris

Strength:

Good video/audio, good remote

Weakness:

Annoying transport noise at times but not often. (that famous Sony quality control?)

I''m guessing that if this product didn''t crash all the time it''d be getting a higher rating. I''ve personally been lucky in this regard, as the performance for the last 6 months has been flawless. Given that the video is pretty good and the audio (at least the digital out) is acceptable, I could be comfortable almost giving this thing a 5. However, sometimes the spinning mechanism is loud. Certain DVDs (or even certain sections of certain DVDs) make the unit itself loud enough that I have to cover it with a sweater because it''s distracting. Anyone have any comments on THAT particular trait? As far as Sony service goes, I say "don''t shop for equipment, shop for a dealer". I think Sony is awful, personally, and this is the only Sony product I''m ever liable to own. However, the high-end audio shop I bought it from promised me that they''d personally service it for free if I had problems. Otherwise I likely wouldn''t have bought it, but I''m glad I did.

Strength:

excellent when it worked

Weakness:

Doesn''t anymore. Time bomb indeed

Well, Well, Well. Looks like I''ve joined a long list of unhappy consumers who purchased the S360. A couple of nights ago my player showed the message of doom "No Disc" I actually feel priviledged that mine lasted 20 months compared to what some of your have experienced. Of course my first action was to call around and find out how much it was to find out what the problem was. If I would have just checked this website out earlier I could have saved myself some time. Everyone repair place I called and of course Sony''s CSR basically was in agreement that I could just as well buy a new one for the amount it would cost for repairs. What a joke! I feel cheated that I didn''t my return on investment and just bought a Sony computer a couple of months ago. I was a very strong supporter of Sony and now it''s tainted because of this piece of garbage. I''ve also seen the site where Reinhart had supplied everyone one of the caliberation troubleshoot but when I pulled up the Diag Start menu i came up blank. Does anyone know of or had this problem as well? Anyway, I think I''m off to buy a Toshiba player. I''ve had some of their products for years and never had a problem. Hopefully my computer will last me longer than 2 years. Thanks for reading

Strength:

Slim and clear picture when worked.

Weakness:

C13, NO DISK and freezing.

I''ve posted a review on this unit before. Just wanted to know if anyone knows how long does it take to calibrate the unit based on the instructions posted on this review forum earlier. I tried calibrating once, but it kept on going after 40+ mins/each on Single and Dual layer DVDs. I stopped the calibratin process. May be I can start calibration as an over- night thing. Thanks in advance. This Sony unit is a piece of junk. Stay away from Sony.

Strength:

Sound! and picture when works. Do not use for CD''s.

Weakness:

C-13''s, No Disk, No CD-R

Same as others - I''m just glad I found these reviews - while searching to see if there was fix! I thought I was crazy, at least I feel validated now! I will try the calibration fix. My symptoms are exactly the same - occasional skipping, pause, and stopping throughout the first 12 months (which was a pain since I found a way to copy these to tape). I hit 13 months exactly last week, and boom - I can''t read most of the disks (or C-13) until I keep re-inserting - I found even banging on the top sometimes works! I already turn power off between usage - have used "good cleaners" - all to no avail. I will bug Sony, too. Sigh, I am a diehard Sony-only person - this has angered and embarrassed me. Good Luck everyone!

Strength:

good quality, when it played

Weakness:

stops working after a year or so.

This product sucks, it started konking out on me with the "no disc" reading problems sporatically 18 months into usage until it stopped reading discs completely. And if that weren''t bad enough, the open/close button got soft on me too!!!

Worked awesome in the beginning.

What everybody else has had. The c13:00 and NO DISC errors

Want to kill this machine. Put me down on the list of class action people. Customer service might as well not be there. Yet another reason to hate Sony.

Strength:

Great remote and on-screen menus. Smooth picture (No pixelation or flashing with composite video so far)

Weakness:

Picture softer than Pioneer or Toshiba. No zoom. Wish Sony still had dual lasers like they used to.

I had been searching for a DVD player for a few months. I must say I'm running it through a composite video cable and I'm sure that has made a difference in my choices. There were several things which bothered be about the Toshiba and Pioneer players. In some movie scenes, niether player was acceptable. In The Matrix, I noticed a strange flashing effect at say the scene where the cops are trying to arrest Trinity at the beginning and she jumps up, time slows, and they rotate the camera angle around her as she's stuck in air. Both had good sharp pictures besides certain instances like that. The Pioneer which I owned second, also had terrible fast forward and rewind displays (and very noisy). I got the Sony a few weeks ago and have been happy. I'll keep it. Has smooth FF and RW, good display in scenes like I mentioned above. I suppose it's more cinematic in it's presentation if that makes any sense. The picture IS softer that either the Toshiba or Pioneer though (edges aren't as well defined). Wish it was a bit more crisp, but once I get a S-Video/Component TV, that should be fine. I think the sound quality is better than the Toshiba but not quite as good as Pioneer. The remote by far better than I've used with the other players I've tried. It is much quiter than Pioneer but a bit louder than the Toshiba (I have slightly heard one DVD spinning from my couch during quite scenes but I havn't had any noise from all other disks played in the Sony). The Sony 360 was the best all around compromise I found.
