Strength:

I like the smaller size of the unit. Picture and sound
are quite good.

Weakness:

Some strangely worded phrases in a lengthy manual.
Lots of jumping around in manual required to stay on
a theme. Not a huge deal for those who are
used to dealing with A/V equipment. Not so sure about
the first time user, though.

Have used this unit for a couple of weeks now.
Picture, as stated in other reviews is somewhat soft,
but don't let that scare you away. Noisy transport
problems noted below are not evident with my unit
during playback. I do notice a clicking sound when
the drawer is closed and the player first reads the
disc.
Happy with purchase and will remain that way as long
as the unit proves reliable.
Sony does seem to want a few extra bucks for their
entry level player compare to some others on the market.

I loved this DVD player for 14 months - until the now infamous "no disc" problem hit! It started with the chapter skipping and freezing up problems, like with others here; then shortly went all the way to the "no disc" problem for any and all discs.

Haven't tried to get a hold of the Denver Sony Repair Center to see if they'll do something for me yet . . .

Weakness:

stopped working after 11 months - "No Disc"

Sparingly used average 1 DVD in 2 weeks. After 11 months
it stopped working with the "NO DISC" error. I contacted
Sony Support, though my player is under parts warranty
they asked $130.00 for labor charges. I decided it was
not practical to get it repaired.

I went to an indepndent authorised repair shop, they
suggested not to spend any money repairing it as Snoy
DVD players have inherent problems and something else WILL
break down later.

I used to be a fan of Sony, but after this experience,
I am not sure if I will buy a SONY again.

Weakness:

LOUD TRAY AND LASER NOISE AND OTHER THAN THAT ITS FABULOUS!!!

THIS IS AN OUTSTANDING UNIT FOR THE PRICE,I ALWAYS HAVE BEEN A SONY ENTHUSIAST AND THEIR PRODUCTS ARE ALL DEPENDABLE AND RELIABLE HOWEVER I WOULD NEVER BUY ANY OF THEIR AUDIO EQUIPMENT LIKE RECIEVERS, THEY JUST DONT SOUND AS CRISP AND CLEAR AS PIONEER.BUT THEY HAVE THE BEST TVS THOUGH

Strength:

Component Video Out.

Weakness:

Lack of 96 KHz Digital Out

This a pretty good player, just makes a bit of noise while running. Sony says this can only play Audio/Video CD and DVD's,not CD-R/W, however, I was able to play an RW, and will try an R as soon as I get a disc. The picture quality is fine, and is the sames as with the Cinemaster. The noise disappears while running, or maybe I don't notice it?, anyway, the noise deal is moot. While this doesn't have a 96 KHz digital out, it still has 96 KHz analog outs, that should be enough (I don't know what frequency the CD's are recorded, if you know, please e-mail me at exocet44@optonline.net).

Strength:

Worked flawlessly for 11 months

Weakness:

Only worked for 11 months

This player bit the dust in less than a year. I was watching only the 2nd disc that I rented when the player suddenly stopped playing. No matter what I did, that disc would not play anymore. It also would not read any other discs be they CD or DVD. I called Sony's 800 # and described what had happened and the man asked if I'd been playing a badly scratched DVD which I had. He said the laser pickup had been knocked off track and would require replacement. He offered to repair the unit for $135 which is not a good economic decision - why pay that much to repair a unit that you know is junk when a brand new player can be had for just a little more money?

Strength:

Size, remote, menus

Weakness:

Does not read CD-R

This is a GREAT DVD player. First off, it is so slim it fits in perfectly with my other components. The remote is well laid out and doesn't look like a toy (Pioneer DV333 remote). Picture quality is excellent and DVD menus are quickly accessed. The best feature of this DVD player when compared to other machines is that it includes full controls on the actual unit. Therefore, if your remote is not handy, you can use the joystick on the chassis to access menus. That is something you will not find on almost every other DVD player.

Strength:

excellent picture quality. Simple hook-up and set-up. Low profile.

Weakness:

none so far

Since this is my first DVD player I have nothing to compare to, but compared to my VCR picture the DVD is eons ahead on picture quality on my 36" Toshiba. I had no problems using the drop dowm menus for set up. The tray opens and closes quietly and I also checked for noise during play as some other reviewers said they had. Sorry, I went up close during play several times and barely heard the motor running. My VCR has more "machine" noise. I also do not have that washed out picture some other reviewers were experiencing. I am using a Svid cable, maybe that helps on the picture quality. Can't comment on CD play. I bought this unit strictly for home theater. I have a 5 disc Sony changer I use for CD's.It is amazing to see the price range on this item and also other gear reviewed on this site. Do your homework and you will get a good price. At the time Sears was matching internet prices and $207 was the best price I could get. Even at $250 this DVD player is worth every penny.
