Strength:

Durability and longevity. Great performance (so far!)

Weakness:

Contrary to others here, I hate this remote! Bulky, too many buttons, not very ergonomic, and the Jog-Shuttle wheel is so difficult to acurately control that I have contemplated replacing the unit for that reason alone. The unit's great performance keeps it around.

I bought this unit around 8/98 at SUN electronics when they were going out of business. It is the first DVD player I ever had, and since I had never even seen another one work before, I was impressed with the picture right away! 6 years now and it has never given me a single problem. Great picture and soundiund quality. Enough hook ups to choke a horse! A little big, heavy and expensive by today's standards...but it has performed flawlessly. Since then I have bought several under-$100 DVD players for my kids rooms, and the disc drive in all of them is quite noisy, so there is yet another great feature for the Sony.

Strength:

Awesome imaging, rock-solid performance (until now!), great audio, easy to use from remote or front panel.

Weakness:

Set up kind of a pain, remote not back-lit.

I've had my DVP-S500D for almost 3 years now. It has played flawlessly until just recently! I brought home a copy of "The Core" DVD and popped it in my player. Life was good until the player hit Chapter 11 of the DVD! The player would freeze scenes, jump, freeze scenes again, jump, and finally, it jumped completely out of Chapter 11 into Chapter 12!! I went back to the store where I bought the DVD, and exchanged it for another one (I dug deep into the pile to hopefully get a DVD from a different run). Brought the DVD home, popped in the player, and BAM.....same thing! Uh-oh!! These are BRAND NEW, in the cellophane DVD's. I have since played other DVD's (including Matrix) flawlessly! Could there be a problem with my player? Or is there a new DVD format that I'm bot aware of that's making my beloved DVP-S500D obsolete!??

Strength:

Used to display a clear, crisp picture and deliver awesome sound.

Weakness:

BREAKS DOWN AFTER ONLY 3 YEARS OF USAGE!! C:13:00 ERRORS AND OTHERS, CAN REPLACE WITH BETTER EQUIP FOR PRICE IT COSTS TO GET THIS FIXED.

TROUBLE, TROUBLE, TROUBLE~ This is a great piece of equipment until you get the DREADED C:13:00 ERROR. Which we think mean your laser is toast. I would think a DVD Player of this quality would last a little longer than 3 years. Now I can go buy one with DTS/everything for $200. So it''s not even worth replacing the laser. All you''ll see is the picture PIXELATING. It''s not your DVD, it''s laser going out. Sony only charges $176 for you to have it sent to their service center, where they might replace the laser or replace the unit. I cleaned the lens with alcohol and a Q-tip, so we know that''s not the problem. Such a shame. :(

Strength:

Great Picture. Nice Remote. Very easy to understand.

Weakness:

Does "hang-up" a bit between tracks on certain DVDs.

I've had this unit for over a year and have throughly enjoyed it. My wife, who was very skeptical at first, now only wants to rent movies on DVD. I got the Sony as a replacement to a Toshiba I had problems with (it was shipped broken).

Overall, I've had almost no complaints about this unit. The only minor gripe I could make is that every once in a while, I'll get a DVD that momentarily "skips" a beat between tracks for no reason. It has occurred on maybe 3 disks, and to be honest, I don't know for 100% sure that it's the fault of the DVP-S500D.

High Recommendation.

Strength:

Great Picture, Built in DD Decoder

Weakness:

Average CD sound. No DTS

This is one fantastic unit. I`ve used it for over a year now and have had no problems with playback. Yes, I have had some freezing problems, but that had to do with a simple cleaning of the disc. Once that was accomplished, the movie played back flawlessly. There are no artifacts and no lip synch problems. One problem--this machine does not play back cds well. For that I use my Pioneer LD player or the DV 515 DVD player.

I do not have DTS with this machine and would like to playback DTS, but that is why I bought a Millenium DTS decoder. I hope it will work with that. Nevertheless, this machine is one I will not part with easily. The blue DD light is bright. However, so is my Monster HTS 2500 and those are the lights that keep me awake at night.

Strength:

Very well made and highly reliable.

Weakness:

non DTS model

This DVD player is an excellent player. Very well made and sturdy, this player will play most any kind of CD media available. Has an excellent remote, and its audio video properties are unmatched by any player in its class. Only downside to this player is that it doesnt support DTS.

Strength:

Great player...dual discreet pickups.

This has been a great player for the year that I've had it, but no longer. About a month ago, it stopped recognizing music cd's and I took it in to be fixed. It's been about 3 weeks, and the tech is "still waiting for parts from Sony." I know this isn't related to the product, but I'm very very angry. I've had about 3 Sony products die on me in the last 3 months...

AND I CAN'T LISTEN TO MUSIC OR WATCH MOVIES!!! I'm going crazy!!!

Strength:

Dual discrete pickup, high quality, awsome picture and sound, Quiet, remote buttons glow in the dark, ect.....

Weakness:

No D.T.S

Great product! Had it for a year, no problems at all. Love the sound and picture. Sony built a good one here. Like the idea of dual lasers for video and CD. To bad it doesn,t have DTS, but hey, buy a preamp or receiver with it and yo,ur off and running.
