Strength:

Good build quality, fast layer changes, fast chapter change, very quite player (dont hear the disc spinning).

Weakness:

Bright Dolby Digital light, wont pass DTS signial.

Very nice player, my only complaint is that it wont do DTS, but I knew that from the begining. Very fast layer changes, and reliable. I have yet to find a DVD disc that this thing cant play. Also it is capable of reading cdr discs, unlike Sony's new DVD Players. Very good unit, but I might end up replacing it soon with the Toshiba 5109, as that is a progresive scan dvd player and will do DTS.

Strength:

Component video out. Plays CD-R discs.

Weakness:

No DTS. Blue "Dolby" light is annoying.

This has been a great player over the last year. It won't do DTS, but I don't care since I don't own anything with that. I finally found a mod kit for this thing after searching off and on for months. They have them at earthstations.com. Now I can play my copy of Leon: Integral Version as well as add a few anime region 2 DVDs to my collection. This kit also disables Macrovision and is a nice bonus. The video and audio quality was the best in it's price range when these were new. Now I'd probably get a Denon. After a few months I put a black sticker over that blue light. Much better now. 4 stars for value and 4 for quality.

Strength:

Terriffic Picture,Sound Ergonomics Remote, Features

Weakness:

None for me I don't give a damn about DTS!

Love is not a strong enough word for how I feel about this unit. I have had it since 7/98, got it from Good Guys for 535.00 when it was selling for 600.00. I have not had a single negative experience, the colors, are vibrant and true to life. The sound is awesome!
I am running it through a Kenwood VR1090 ac3 receiver and a Hitachi 32 inch tv my speakers are Infinity Rs5 Main, A DCM
center a pair of JBL Control 5's and a pair of Optimus Lx 5s
also i have a pair of Orion mtx3 10 inch subt running through a Carver Pro 100 amp this system ROCKS I love it it is a Frankenstein but it WORKS find that the sound is much better through the coax output for movies but am using the optical into my Sony MD510 minidisk recorder I get great clones that way. Recently I made a copy of the music from Yellow Submarine and it sounds like as3 in my car which obviously isn't.This unit works great as a cd player as well and I can recommend it highly!

I've read a lot about the lip-sync problems that a lot of Sony players have, and am thankful I spent a little extra money to avoid these issues. This player passes with flying colors on this account. A lot of folks seem pretty concerned about whether it will pass dtx, it doesn't. C'est la vie, but really has anyone noticed any significant difference between 5.1 and dtx anyway. Surely, all titles will be released in 5.1, so the point, I don't think, is too serious a one. The only complaint I could make and it is a minor one is the shuttle job feature is a bit cumbersome to operate smoothly. Another strong advantage is it has component video outputs which is a strong improvement on the clarity of the picture. If you are thinking of joining the dvd revolution, get with it because the picture will make your vhs look like the junk that it truly is. I have owned this unit for 7 months.

Nothing wrong at all with it, it does everything I want it to flawlessly. I think that the set up menu is great for the Dolby Digital option. It is easy to set up and it outputs high quality and picture. I would recommend it to anyone.

I have had The Sony DVP-S500D for almost six months now and must say that it has been a stellar performer overall. The picture quality is superb and on par with players costing much more. As far as sound quality I have the unit hooked up via coaxial cable to my Sony STRDA50ES which sounds incredible in both a Home Theatre and Stereo modes. This player also has NO TROUBLE reading my homemade CD-R's and is very good at playing scratched discs others choke on. I have tried CD-R's on some MUCH higher priced players with no luck. Overall a five star piece, plus with the release of the new Sony players this one should be a steal now.

I've had my '500 since last December. The unit has performed flawlessly. At first I was discouraged that it would not pass DTS DVD signals. It will pass DTS CD however, and this greatly mollified me. I believe the real future of DTS lies in surround music.
For films, Dolby Digital is fine with me.
The unit could use some extra ventilation grilles, as a disc is quite warm by the end of playing.
I also like the idea the '500 has dual lasers, which, this year can only be found on the '7700.

I have had this player for a year and a half. I watch DVDs about 3 to 4 times a week or more. It has never given me a problem and I love it!!
I wish it had DTS sound, but I love the Dolby Digital 5.1. I also have the Sony 935 receiver and it sounds awesome with this player. I am not sure if they still make this player due to the lack of DTS, but if you have a chance to get it, go for it!

Have had this player since last Christmas. Very happy with the unit and have had no problems. My only objection is that prices keep going down on DVD players and features keep being added, but this is to be expected as DVD becomes more main stream. Five stars for DVD!
