Excellent DVD player! Neat features like 9 bookmarks per DVD that shows a screenshot of the bookmarks. Crystal clear images in frame by frame mode. Picture quality is excellent in all modes. |

Just bought this player for use in system including Outlaw750,Sony TA-E9000es and Paradigm monitor9s/lcr-350/adp-350s. Adequate DVD but not that impressive in picture quality. Last emperor DVD flickered like a candle flame, which didn't happen with the Toshiba 3109, which costs $100 less. There are better values available. |

Excellent DVD player. Has given me no problems (lip-synch or otherwise). Everything looks good and sounds good. Have had it for 8 months. |

Strength:
excellent picture, good remote
Weakness:
some options hard to understand/program Excellent player. I am aware of the lip-sync problem although since 5/99 I have not had a single problem on any disc. I would purchase another Sony if I needed to. |

Strength:
Has all the features you want.
Weakness:
Power Supply is noisy. This Sony, like so many others, is well made and does everything you'd buy it for. All the features work, some are easy to use, some aren't. Jog for instance, is harder then on some other video equipment. The picture is good but I was disapointed in the sound. If I played a CD it was nowhere near as good as my tricked out CD player. So, I opened the player up and found a less then great power supply. There was only a small amount of capacitive filtering. I wanted to add more in order to improve the sound. However too much capacitance and the power supply will stop working. To get around this I made some inductors using ferrite cores, about 1 inch dia. and put 15 feet of 26ga wire on them. These I intalled in series with each voltage output. It was easy since there are fuseable resistors in each voltage output. I unsoldered one end and soldered the inductor lead in its place. The other end was soldered to the resistor end that was now in the air. Easy! I then was able to double the capacitance that was already on the board for each voltage. The 3.3Volts that goes to the main audio and video processors comes from the only voltage regulator on the board, so bigger capacitors were easy to add. I put in 1000uF units here. EVERYTHING got better! The sound improved a lot but the video is now so good I'm almost spoiled. Its hard to watch other things now. I was forced to improve the VCR as well just so I could live with it. The DVD is good out of the box but lets see how good we can make it! I have a (small) big screen (46inch) and its easy to see the effects of any changes. I'm now wondering how good this player would look if I get after the TV too. I love Riverdance and when I saw it after the changes I was in love with it all over again! Everything looks and sounds better. Similar Products Used: n/a |

Could someone please submit a detailed review of this player, including all specs? I realize this player is relatively new and would like to hear from people that have recently purchased it. I am strongly considering the Panasonic A-120, so if anyone has any ideas as to why this is superior/inferior I would love to hear them. Please include whether or not this player is DTS capatable. Thanks. |

I recently purchased the DVP-S550 and am very pleased with the unit. I was close to buying the JVC 501 and looked at the Toshiba 2109 and Panasonic A-120 as well. However, I was particularly impressed by the Sony's multitude of options available and the slow motion features and performance. I liked the flexibility possible with the dual S-Video and composite output as well as the optical and coax digital outputs. I also felt that the fact it was just released this month means it has the latest available technology (hopefully). The unit and the remote itself also look more attractive than anything else I've seen (not that it matters that much). |

Strength:
Very clear picture and sound quality, Nice design, extremely nice remote commander remote control.
Weakness:
Lip sync off a little at sometimes (rarely occurs) As my first DVD player I can say that this is a very well made DVD player. I bought this one to connect to my Dolby Digital Ready Sony Mini Hi-Fi Component System receiver. At first I had a small problem with adjustments, the sound seemed to low and weak. I thought it was the 5.1 input connexions, but actually if you want clearer more louder sound out off your dolby digital ready receiver instead of choosing "standard" under the set up mode choose the "TV mode" and I guarantee you'll get better sound out of your players inputs. You'll also get more defined sound out of your headphones in this mode as well. That is the only set- back that bothered me the most and I wish that the costumer serice centre would of helped me more on this one. The picture is extremely clear and the Noise Reduction is good. A good buy (especially since I bought a cheaper model and got this one). Similar Products Used: sony dvp-s530, sony dvp-s560, sony dvp-s570 |
