Fantasic player! Great Picture, Great Audio!!! Its solid.

I tried the Tosh 3108 and had nasty artifacts, also couldn't tract CDs with scratchs well.

The 530 is a good alternative if you need to save a few $'s

lip sync problem

well 4 months it took but the lip sync problem showed up !I figure I`m always ff or rev but never just letting the movie run without changing scenes or something.Well when I let pvt ryan run without touching the player boom at 1 Hour 42 min in LIP SYNC error. Well I guess I should have listened to you all. Thank goodness I bought it from costco they refunded my 400 bucks after 4 months use. Yea! for costco!!!Sony will not ship for free to get it fixed they want you to pay to ship or drive it to a repair center, 10 days min.I`m trying to find a unit with a high SS.# but cant find one I guess i`ll wait a while.without this problem 10 stars , with it 1

Lip Sync issues on some models

I bought my player about 6 months ago and notice the lip sync bug almost immediately. I called SONY and they scheduled a FedEx pickup for me and I had the unit returned to me (they actually sent me a brand new unit) with revision 2.21. Please note that SONY is no longer paying for the shipping charges if you send the unit in. The best thing to do is to call them and find out the nearest SONY repair center to drop the unit off at.

The unit itself if excellent! I've tried similar products from Toshiba, Pioneer, JVC, and Panasonic...none compare in value, qaulity, and features! Also, the SONY unit has two sets of outputs so that connecting it to your components is a bit easier!

Strength:

Great picture, DTS and AC-3 sound great, remote and controls exactly what the doctor ordered

Weakness:

Lip-sync problem (fixed), nothing else

My 550D was recently returned to me by Sony Customer Service (Ha ha, their joke not mine). The machine itself is really a delight to use, offering a great deal of performance for less than $400 (mine was $370 something, not including shipping). I use mine with Sony's 555ES receiver, which I think is a great combination for both movies and music--the 550D actually has a more pleasing sound for CDs than my XA1-ES CD player. A minor problem, in my opinion, is the documentation. Particularly when paired with the terrible manuals that go with the 555ES, the 550D's manual is very confusing. For instance, the 550D lets the user set the location of the rear speakers (set to the side, or directly behind, etc) or to make a phantom center channel for those without centers. The 555ES does the same thing--which should be switched on? Will the 555ES make a phantom center from the 550D's 5.1 signal downconverted for a phantom center? A mystery!

Now that the lip-sync problem is all taken care of (I was sent a brand new unit, revision 2.21), no one should think twice about buying this unit. It is the best in the price range, period.

Excellent Picture, Sound, Features and Value!

I've used this Sony for the last 3 months now and I haven't had any problems. The picture quality using component video is simply amazing. I have had no lip sync problems and I've been able to play every disc I've rented or bought from start to finish. This is my first DVD player and my friends (who have had other players) just love it. They love the features this baby has for the price and the picture quality. All I need to do is upgrade to a Dolby Digital/DTS receiver and I'm all set. If you don't have one go get one. Just make sure your getting the latest firmware (2.2 I believe).

I first started looking at DVD players back in April. I first tried the Pioneer 414, but that machine just seemed too flimsy, and I also heard about problems it was having. Next I tried the Toshiba 2109, which was great, but didn't have quite all the features I wanted. So, I moved to the Sony. The picture difference between it and the Toshiba was noticeable - the Toshiba was nice, but the Sony just had a better film-like quality (slightly softer, better color balance). Anyways, I did begin to notice the lip-sync problem, specifically with a couple of discs (the only reproducible one I could find was the Carrie Fisher segment in Austin Powers - if you jump to this scene through the bonus menu, it caused problems every time). The lip sync was annoying, I agree, but the other differences still made it tops over other players. And now all is well, because Sony upgraded the unit free of charge - they picked up the unit on a Thursday and had it back to me by Wednesday of the next week. Pretty fast service! And now no problems. Overall, one of the best players out there...

Strength:

great remote control, nice features

This was my first DVD player, and I'm very impressed - as I'm just starting my home theater system, I don't have the receiver yet, and the DVD players "Virtual Surround Mode" worked really well to trick my ears into thinking there was sound behind me, even though I was only using my TV speakers. I also haven't seen any lip synch problems in the month or so that I've had it. It's a little on the pricey side, however...
