Strength:

Great sound and picture

Weakness:

None that I have found

I have owned this unit for only a few weeks, but am very pleased with it. I have found the remote easy to use, have not heard any audible motor noise, and have not had any problems with playing rented or new DVDs.

Strength:

Great Looking!...Matches my TV and Stereo.

Weakness:

I have a defect with my unit and returned it to Sony.

I was watching Gladiator Thanksgiving weekend and the movie paused for 2-5 seconds and right before the VERY end it just stopped. I tried to play it again, but was unsuccessful with this movie or any other DVD movie or CD. I'm hoping to get my unit back from Sony soon. I'll hate to think that such a great looking and expenses product is just that and has no quality. I'll re-rate this product when I get it back. Did any one else expirence this?

Strength:

Well-designed interface, decent DTS/AC-3 decoder

Weakness:

Can't play CD-Rs, eject button behaviour is odd, runs hot!

The first thing I should mention is that I bought this by mistake; I was informed by my dealer that the '570 replaced the '560, which is the model I wnated. I figured I'd just go digital out, and let the receiver do the DTS/AC-3 stuff.

Since then, I've decided this is a fortunate mistake. I'd rather that the receiver be higher fidelity, and not bother with most surround stuff. The decoder in this unit seems to be fairly good at what it does. Sounds in both stereo and AC-3 mode seem well-defined and true.

When coupled with a Sony Wega via S-video (with high-end aftermarket cables), the '570 generates a crisp picture. Colours are true (including black), and edges are well-defined. I've noticed none of the artifacts reported by other users.

I have noticed 1 second delays during playback twice now. Both of these were with rented DVDs, and I assumed that there was a problem with the media. I will have to investigate. Problem titles (so far) have been "Midnight in the Garden of Good an Evil" and "Galaxy Quest".

I have not noticed a problem with excessive noise. The unit makes a certain amount of whirring when moving to a new track (e.g., when navigating DVD menus) but this is no more than a very quiet VCR. It is certainly liveable, and is not heard during regular playback.

The remote is well-designed and well layed-out. I wish it worked as my receiver remote, but it cannot control Marantz equipment. This is NOT a "universal remote" so do your homework if this is important to you. As usual, I'm stuck with 3 remotes I have to keep handy.

This unit will not play CDRs, which is a small problem for me. Mea culpa! I should have checked the specs first!

After a few minutes or hours of playback, if you hit the stop button twice ("stop" really means "resume" unless you hit it twice) and then hit the eject button on the console nothing happens. You have to hit it _again_. This is very annoying, and may be related to how long the button is depressed. Still, it is hard to train myself to _hold_ the eject button, instead of tapping it like I'm used to.

This unit runs hot inside. The case certainly warms up, but DVDs and CDs come out HOT. Is the laser hotter for DVD? Place this unit on it's own shelf, not on another component, and give it plenty of breathing space. It's not deep enough to stack any full-sized component on it, anyway.

Another pet peeve of mine is that it spins up and plays a DVD once you close the tray. I can't get it to just spin up and _wait_ for me to press "play". This is more than a little annoying, since I often want to get the disk in first, before I get to my seat with a cold beverage at hand. If this is pilot error, it is non-obvious how to disable the auto-play behaviour. There are a lot of settings to wade through, and the (largish) manual expects you have a certain amount of AV savvy to get it right.

Even though it is not very audiophile to use your DVD player as a CD player, I've had no problems playing CD's. The sound seems true when using the optical digital out to send a PCM stream to the receiver. Since this unit can handle 24-bit digital information, I'm guessing it can handle CDs with no problem. Furthermore, any D-to-D conversion that takes place seems to not have any effect; at least any effect that I can hear with my modest system.

The unit is expensive, but if you are looking for a decent digital source for playing CDs and DVDs, which has quality DTS and AC-3 decoding built in, and more outputs than you probably need, the Sony DVP-S570D will likely fit the bill.

Strength:

Chrome/silver color to match Sony WEGA TVs. All necessay outputs needed for a home theater. Easy Navigation with the remote control. Great Slow motion. Nice options such as repeat play and custom play (you pick what scenes and titles you want to play during the movie, good if you hate a certain scene in a movie or is innapropriate for children).

Weakness:

No zoom. I dont ever use that feature though so its unimportant to me.

The DVP-S570D DVD player is one of Sony's best. The chrome/silver color is very cool. If you own a Sony Wega, you HAVE to get this DVD player. This was made by Sony to match the Wega. There a pair and a refreshing sight after the overused black color. During a movie I find myself staring at the player, its so cool looking! The picture it sends out is FLAWLESS, and so is the sound. It has many useful features and every output you could ever need. And the remote is the best ive ever used (the buttons glow in the dark too!). The DVP-S570D is worth every cent it costs. Go buy it.

Weakness:

Does not play HDCD, has difficulty reading CD-R's, skips and freeze frames on the Matrix, and the Sixth Sense.

It goes back to the store tomorrow. Could not get hold of Sony for support. Sony's on-line requires private info about you, i.e. your income, number of childres, required, and a marketing survey must be filled out before Sony will reveal their 800 support number.

Difficulty setting up 5:1, a Denon A/V receiver is unable to decode the rear channels, connected via optical on most DVD's except Sony's... I wonder whats up with that... I have an older Samsung that decodes just fine.

Not willing to fight the battle...

Strength:

Decent video and audio.
Small size.
Simple controls.

Weakness:

Length of time to start playback cycle.
Lack of progressive scan.
Remote size and complexity.
Lightweight.

Used with Sony 32" WEGA (XBR), Nakamichi AV-8 and Niles speakers. Provides good picture and suprisingly decent audio for cds. No problems with unit at all -- simple to set up and use.

This is not a state of the art dvd or even near to it but it is certainly more than sufficient, I would think, for the needs of most people.
