This player is the best....there are no pitfalls except for that it finds it hard to read some older rented dvd's...which I think any player would have a problem with being that they are all mishandled and scratched.. My policy is to receive a rented disc...clean it quickly and wallah it works. The styling on the unit is great...the remote is big but is very fucntional in my opinion...the JOG dial and Joystick make it a great remote.

MY Overall opinion is that this is a great player and if we look for nitty gritty issues then no one will ever be happy.... There is no way to make all of us happy all of the time with all of the features that we want. SONY however has come close to it on many a occasion and this is one of them.

I was one of the very first people to own this piece buying it for a unreasonable price of $499 at costco of all places when it first came out. I have over a hundred DVDs so it was used quite a bit. About 7 months after I started having th same trouble as noted below. Fortunately for me costco took it back and gave me a full refund UNBELIEVABLE i know. So I was thinking of getting the sony es but didnt feel the need for super audio and $ 1400 bucks for something that dosen't even have a built in dts decoder seemed highly exaggerated. So I went to my hookup at pc richard and I bought the same one again. If you have a sony XBR the picture is just short of progressive with that feature the dvd has. I just love the fact that it has a DTS decoder built in. I know its not necessary but it just feels right. Anyway I havent had any new problems so far and i'm truly satisfied. I've recommended this piece to 3 people and they all enjoy it. If your looking for a outstanding picture for your money and you own a sony TV or a TV lacking a progressive input I would definitely go for it.

the nice silver design, the size, remote, and the loading time

it's noisy..drive me nuts! oncertain DVDs when it's changing layers, it will tend to pause for 1 sec to switch to the second layer. On a few dvd's when it had to switch layers, it restarted the movie all over again.

I've had this DVD for quite a while, and i'm totally impressed with the DVD quality. I love going into blockbuster and pick up a movie which is all out on VHS. And the people there are like "aww...i wish i had a dvd player so that i could watch that movie"

well anyway..since i got my dvd player. Many of my friends came over to watch movies and stuff.

This DVD player is a little pricy though...for people who want a simple dvd player without the SS, DTS, NTSC..etc..sould get a cheaper one for like 200$US.

I replaced my piece of junk Denon DVD-1500 with the Sony DVP-S570D and fairly disappointed with it. I have pretty demanding standards from a DVD player in the $500 (MSRP) range. The Sony is noisy! During quiet movie passages, I can hear it whirring & chugging from 12' away.

I've also noticed some visible artifacts in at least two movies. The problem is the same - a band of horizontal distortion in the top quarter of the screen. It appears when the images are dark on the bottom half and light on the top.

For example - I recently watched Braveheart. Several of the battle scenes have a dark, gritty foreground set against a pale white skyline. The horizontal distoration appears at the top of the screen, right across the sky. I've found the same situation in new release of T2. During the 'mental ward breakout scene' - Arnold in his dark leather jacket occupies the foreground against the stark white walls of the mental ward. A band of distortion appears in the white background across the top of the screen.

I had plenty of problems with my DVD-1500 (specifically with seamless branching in some media) - But never with this type of signal interference. I've tried swapping & moving cables suspecting interference, but no luck. I've ordered another Monster Cable S-Video cable just to be sure.

Other than the noise and the interference in some media, I've been happy with the player and it's ease of use.

At the $500 MSRP price point, I don't expect these kind of problems and have adjust my value rating accordingly. From an overall standpoint, it's got a lot to like - but I've found problems with some media.

Awesome design, excellent video / audio output.

Slight difficulty in reading rental DVDs

I was quite apprehensive about the product after reading some of the reviews on this page. I initially considered getting a progressive scan model, but found out that my TV doesn't support the digital input (it only has S-video input). It was a toss-up between the Pioneer 333 model and this one, until I called J&R and found out about their price. Rented A Bug's Life and Ronin, and could not believe the quality of the picture and audio. Definitely a worthwhile purchase.

When plays, very nice

Erro 13 "Disk DIrty" and "No disk found"

Like so many others, my SOny DVD player reports brand new disk as diry or no present in player. Disks wyould play a month ago no says do not exist! Getting worse every time I use the player (6 months old). Have had some playback problems since the begining. Now is almmost useless.

easily overheats, hangs, freezes, shows no disc on display and would not play at all.

i will not recommend this player to anyone. it sucks and such a waste of money. it is really a disappointment knowing that this is a sony product. i only have this unit for 5 months. i initially purchased the same model but after a week, it gave me the same problems already. i thought it was just the unit that i got so i had it exchanged but now the same thing is happening. the problem is really with this model. steer clear of this product.

When I first seen this DVD player I thought WOW great stylin!!But of course stylin dont mean nothing compared with QUALITY@PERFORMANCE. However my mind was put at ease after i hooked the player up and tested it out.Stunning picture quality that rivals DVD players costing twice as much.The features are also more of what you would expect to find on a more expensive player.Sony always had the ability to "Stand-Out" among the "Me-To" brands,but with this player Sony takes us a GIANT leap above the other DVD players out there!!! I strongly recommend this player to anyone looking for a "Hi-End" DVD player at a "Mid-Fi" price!!!! 3 cheers to SONY!!!!! :)
