Strength:

I just think :"Do I need a DTS?" Not with this SONY... Excellent!!! Looks cool too..... I got it for something like $700-800... Never been sorry for it...

Weakness:

No DTS, but as I just said I don't need it with it... Remote... But it's very easy to use- even my wife has no problem with it...

I love it, even there is Sony 7700 (DTS)...
Had no problems with quality- TG...
Love listening CD's on it....
What else?
Sony is a Sony.......

This was the one of the best $1000 I have spent. For starters it is the best CD player I have ever heard (supposed to be as good as the ES Sony CD players). Of course the good part is the DVD. I have watched many movies side buy side with Sony VCR (SLV-761) and they are so much better it is hard to descirbe. I have also watched this player side by side with other players, and is better in controls and especially motion controls. The freeze frame, two slow speeds, 2x (with sound, kinda cool), 10x and 20x, allow you to do anything you want. Lastly, it has any kind of output you could want.

Strength:

Outstanding Video and Audio

This was my first DVD player. As far as I am concerned this DVD player beat the others hands down. It is so good that I purchased the DVP-7700 by Sony only because I have a receiver that has both DD Dolby Digital and DTS Surround Sound. I think that the Sony DVP-S7000 and 7700 are outstanding DVD players. They cost a pretty penny, but look at what you get compared to the others.

Everyting!!!!

The 7700 has been around for awhile now and I have not one desire to replace my 7000. Sony hit this one out of the park on the first swing. The video is amazing, the audio is stunning. When the Titanic goes down, you can feel the ship twisting below you--literally!! For an added treat try Pink Floyd's The Wall. If this dosen't convince anyone of the power of this unit, nothing will. And this thing is built like a tank!! My ES stuff is very happy to have this fella hanging 'round. It dosen't have that little gold square on it's front plate, but it really should have been put there, it deserves it any way you look at it.
Just for giggles:
Sony DA80ES receiver. Like the DA90 - without the gimicks.
Sony CDP-XA3ES
Sony KX27XBR37 (I'll wait for HDTV before I get anything bigger)
Sony PLM-A55 Glasstrons What a great toy!! Can't count the times these things have given me a good case of vertigo.
Sony APM-66ES The original circa 1984 model. These speakers after 15 years are still some of the best I've ever heard, with the exception of Matin Logans' ReQuest's. But not by much....
Paradigm Reference LCR-450x2 and CC-450

Strength:

Excellent playback image and picture controls. Makes a great cd transport too.

Weakness:

no dts, remote is ok, but not great.

I've got this player when it first came out and it still performs as well as the day I got. I have it connected to a Sony 53XBR300 through the component inputs and well, we all know how great a picture the XBR300 displays. If you can get a used or demo of the DVP-7000 (i saw that www.cructhfield.com has a 'scratch and dent' model), go for it. I'll be updating this unit next month with Sony's new reference dvd player, the DVP-9000ES. I'm then gonna purchased a second tv for the bedroom, the Sony 36XBR400 and hookup the DVP-7000 to it.

Additional uses: I coupled the coax out of the DVP-7000 with a Sony MDS-JA555ES minidisc recorder/player and md's sounded just as good as the cd. Excellent imaging and clarity with dubs.

Additional audio setup:

Sony TA-E9000ES Pre-Amp
Sony TA-N9000ES Power Amp
Sony SCD-777ES SACD Player
B&W Nautilus 804 loudspeakers for front and rear channels.
B&W Nautilus N-HTM1 loudspeaker for center channel.

Strength:

Exceptionnal as a transport
Very good as a CD player
Excellent as DVD player

Weakness:

Remote akward for CD play

Use it as a transport only.Bought it last week for a song....also read de planet Hi-fi review....the best transport in the world "cost-no-object" circa 1997? arguably so. But at $ 500.00$ clearance price...it is a STEAL. 10 stars if possible!!!!

I must echo another reviewer: "This was the one of the best $1000 I have spent. For starters it is the best CD player I have ever heard (supposed to be as good as the ES Sony CD players). Of course the good part is the DVD."

I have owned this player for over three (3!) years now and hope for another 3-5 yrs of life from it very much.

Musical Aside:
I have a Nakamichi AV-10 and even tho' it's PCM DAC is really OK - it is not as nice as the Sony - sounds muffled and dull.

Have watched several hundred movies I would say, and have enjoyed this product immensely. Remote is well thought out and good UI. I recommend if you intend to use as both DV and CD players, spend the extra bucks and get the latest DVP-S7700 model.

Strength:

Excellent audio. Very good picture quality. Cool motorized front panel.

Weakness:

Lack of more "gimicky" controls, both on the player and on the remore. It doesn't even have a jog shuttle dial. :-(

Frankly, this is the first and only DVD player I have owned. One of the reasons I bought this particular one was the good things I have heard about this unit. Having had a broken CD player for more than 3 months also put me in a desparate search for a CD player. Since the price I saw came down from $999 to $599, I decided it was the best thing to do.

I have been very happy with the quality of the playbacks. I haven't had the chance to check out too many others, but I suspect, for the money, few others can compare with the Sony, especially with equally excellent CD playback quality.

Now the next thing is to get the peripherals (Dolby receiver, etc.)

Just got it yesterday from Camera World for $560 plus 5 free dvd from sony.
Cd play back is very good for a dvd player indeed as posted by others. Compared to the Rega planet I have, the s7000 is a little brighter.

Compared to my Samsung 905 dvd player for cd playback, the sony wins hands-down.
On the sony, the music sounds almost as if a veil has been peeled off. Actually, I used to think that the samsung audio cd playback was pretty good.

And a pleasant surprise, the headphone section of the s7000 can drive my Sennheiser 580 loud. Initial impression is very crisp and clear, tho' a little bright compare to the McCormack MID headphone amp.

For anyone who is thinking about upgrading your mass market cd-player, the sony at its current close out price is a steal. From what I heard, it makes a great transport for future upgrading. But wait, grab a Grado 60 headphones or $200 Senn 580 headphones, you have a great sounding headphone-cd playback combination!!!

Five stars.

My Sony DVP-S7000 is a great piece of equipment... The video playbackis the best I've seen from any consumer video device. Compared with
other DVD players, the picture quality is sometimes the same, sometimes
a little better, and occassionally a lot better. The sound quality is
good.. Better than any of the other DVD players I've listened to. Better
than any low-end CD players, but not quite as good as the high end CD players.

The player is a bit on the large size, and the silly drop-down front panel
is something I could do without, but this is the best DVD player out there.
