This is a very good machine and the review below points out many of it's nice features (and a few small bad ones). Solid performance where it counts, audio and video is great! Music CD sound is really good, which is important to people like myself that use it for audio only listening also. This unit has all features and outputs you want.
Sony DVD-S725 is highly recommended!

Strength:

This unit had some great features like bookmarks and bit rate meter.

Weakness:

On board decoder very low sub output !

I bought the 725 as an upgrade to the Panasonic A310, but
was dissapointed very quickly as it seems impossible to get it to decode the LFE (.1) track with any power. I had this player connected to my REL Q100E and it sent clicks and bangs through the sub output to my sub. Took it back to the shop and tried another one, it did exactly the same. Tried a third one and got the same result !!!

The Sony 725's on board processor outputs a very low output to the sub. If you intend to connect this player to a 5.1ch ready amp - DON'T it can't hack it !

I'm sure it is perfect when taking the decoding off board, sorry Sony harder next time !

Strength:

sound, picture and design of the unit

Weakness:

design of the remote

as most people i was searching for a DVD-player for a long time, compared everyting and went to a lot of stores. during a sale at RAF Amsterdam i found this player for about 60% of the normal price and had to take it home. i connected it to my surround receiver (just a poor little sony pro-logic) but i was blown away. WOW i really love this. the sound is so much better than with vcr and also the sound when playing CD's is great. and the picture as sharp as a knife

Strength:

The quality of the image and the sound is unbelievable. But you have to buy a RGB Scart cable to take the most of it. It has so many sound options that it makes you dizzy. It remembers when you stoped your DVD movie a big plus! And the Virtual 3D Surround it really works! Lot's of connectors at the back... And a transport system for an oscar.

Weakness:

This is no remote control.. This is a SPACE station! Also thank god that I'm a veteran player of a playstation or else I couldn't handle that joystick! Image sometimes tend to have TOO vivid colors. Oh it can't play CD-Rs but I heard that using some brands you can surpass this little problem. Using music CDs the machine shows it's power but I guess a bit too much as it shows too pompus low feq.
And the size of the letters in the option menus! Eye strain!

I have to get this Sony fixed so it can play all region...
It plays without any problems the NTSC DVDs but only if you have RGB Scart or you use all region, you can see them in full color.
If the sound in normal CD's was less bass loaded and it was all region PLUS if it was playing CD-Rs Then the 725 will be the PERFECT DVD.
(The ackward remote is seperate problem)

Strength:

Very good picture quality, above average for audioCD, built in 5.1 decoder.

Weakness:

If built in decoder not required get DVP525. DVP7700 looks so sexy.

In terms of picture quality, there are not much to separate the 4 DVD players I have a chance to compare. However, the 725 sound better using the internal DAC and built quality. The tray and disc sound very quiet in use. If you need a decoder & not thinking of getting a AV receiver, connecting the Sony to stereo amps gives you 5.1 experience straight away.

One more thing. Using the Sony as a transport using external DAC of TagMcLaren av32r makes my wonder why I need to keep my Linn Karik for audioCD play back. This cost 4 times more than the Sony but not that much anymore using the same external processor DAC. I cannot see why we need to worried using DVD player as a universal player.

If you are absolutely against regions get a region 3 player.

Strength:

Cd audio playback due to variable Coefficient filter is worth the money its self.Picture out of this world with s-video lead.

Weakness:

Can over heat,it's not to much of a problem but the fact that the player doesn't play CD-R is a pain.

The quality you expect from a Sony even though I had to have it replaced due to black dot's appearing on the screen. By far worth the money specialy as I have the Britsh enhanced version with Sony ES features. The sound using the optical out pluged into my Sony STR-930 is amazing especially Gladiator in DTS. The Parent control is a joke but you don't the player for that.

The remote is easy to use, with AV and TV volume all on the same remote. Picture quality kills it rivals even the Es High end player.I'm a bit disapointed I wasn't told of the multi-region release about half a year later. I would definately stick to Sony when buying dvd players maybe the SACD DVD player next.

Oh yes the overall look brillient, Black aluiminim front panel, shinny gold ports at the back and a blue multi-channel light what more can I say

Strength:

Picture & Sound Quality, great setting-possibilities, good-looking (silver)

Weakness:

Buttons on the front of the player don't always work, CD-R

A great player for the money I paid. I find the remote comfortable, despite of the things other reviewers have said. Have watched about 10 movies and the lip-sync problem hasn't occurred to me...Knock on wood. The CD-Sound is also awesome (you can sell your old CD-player) and the picture is sharp as a knife. It's a Sony - do I have to say more. BUY IT!!!
