Sound quality, picture quality and menus

Weakness:

Remote control, too big, bad 'joystick'

This is the first DVD-Player i bought. I've Spent months figuring out how i could create home cinema without having to use some cheep/bad sounding (for audio) home cinema all in one 'sony' like receiver. I'll explain what i wanted: Being an audio enthousiastic for a couple of years, i own a (for my standards) pretty good audio set ( Densen Beat amp, Nakamichi tape deck, Yamaha cdx-750 CD-Player and Quadral Shogun speakers ). A couple of years ago Onkyo created a really great dolby surround decoder (not AC3) that decoded a dolby surround signal and that amplified the center and the rear channel so that speakers could be hooked up to this unit and you could use your 'normal' amp for the two front speakers. Unfortunately for AC3 i did not came accross such a unit. A friend of mine even bought a Pioneer AC3 receiver and now uses this receiver to listen to LP's ! That's not what i wanted... So that's when i bought the Sony DVD player, that has an onboard decoder. I now use the Densen to amplify the front speakers signal, use the tv (which has a audio in) as center speaker and S-VHS in for better picture quality, and now i am waiting for some Tannoy speakers which i will use as rear speakers, these speakers will be amplified by a Yamaha AX-750 amp. So for now i do not know how the complete system will sound. It sounds and looks really great! Yamaha has the name of creating great DA-converters in their CD-Player, but i can tell you that this DVD-player plays CD's better than this Yamaha player. It's really good! Much more detail, it looks like the music comes alive! I haven't noticed any LipSync problem though. I think this really is a great player, also for playing audio CD's , just try it !

Strength:

Clear and detailed sound - nice picture quality!

Weakness:

On some DVD movies you will see a short break when shifting to another chapter.
I think this is a bug on all Sony DVD players :o(

First of all I would like to state that this player is the best player I have seen to date.

The configuration of this player is easily done using the logical OS menu, and the sound is the best I have heard to date!

I do not know if the onboard Dolby Digital outputs are any good, since I am only using the optical digital out.

This playes is also very silent and quick to access the movie - unlike the Sony 715 wich where rather slow (but ok .. hehe .. 1st generation DVD player).

If you, like myself, is a movie nerd, who wants the best sound and best picture, then buy this player, you will not regret it.

My configuration is:

1 Sony DVP-S 725
1 Dennon AV1CD (THX Ultra certified, DTS, AC3, Pro Logic)
3 NAD 218 Power Amps (THX certified)
1 B&W CDMC SE Center speaker
2 B&W CDM-7 SE Series HIFI speaker (Rear)
1 B&W ASW 3000
2 Cerwin Vega AL-1000 (Front) (will be changed to B&W Matrix or Nautilus series)

Note: The overall rating only got 4, because of the delay when shifting chapters (on some DVDs).
