Strength:

picture, sound, built-in DD and DTS dekoder, looks, functionality

Weakness:

none yet

It is a decent DVD/CD player. Good picture, no anomalies in it, some not very useful settings for picture in menus, for this price range it is very intersting player. I am using built in decoders for DD and DTS, and I must say I am satisfaied with sound. It is not like dedicated DTS/DD decoder, although it has features that are neccesity in home theater (distance, size, level).
This player is also good for CD-s, it isn't reading CD-R and RW's. Sound is same as my Sony CDP 315(old but still good player).
I am considered about realibility of this DVD player (previous Sony's dvd players had problems), other features are A+.

Strength:

Exellent picture quality, Good easy to navigate OSD menu

Weakness:

no CDR-CDRW support

I've owned this DVD player for over a year. It is currently hooked up with a STRDB940B Sony receiver that matches the Aluminium finish perfectly.

The DVP-S735 is easy to navigate through the On Screen Display menu and the remote control functions make it very easy to navigate all menus.

My only complaint about this player is its lack of CDR-CDRW compatibility.. other than that , I'am one happy camper!.

Strength:

Great Looks, Picture and Sound Quality, Features

Weakness:

Disc spin sometimes noisy

I think that this DVD player is great. It has great looks and combines perfectly with my Sony STR-DB940 Amp. The alluminium front panel and the discrete lights make it the best-looking DVD player around. It is also quite slim which makes it look even better.

But this thing is not only gorgeous is also quite perfect in terms of picture and sound quality. I use the RGB output on my Grundig Xentia TV and I have a crisp and clean image to drool on.

As for sound, I don't use the internal decoders but through the Sony amp, the sound is very good especially the clean highs which doesn't have any distortion, common on cheaper players.

The extras are also great especially the video equalizer, the jog shuttle on the IR Command and the bookmark facility.

The only annoying thing is that sometimes when a disc starts it makes a audible spinning noise which can't be accepted on this kind of player. But this aspect has no significance when weighed with the other excellent features.

Strength:

It's a very good product. The image is sharp, the colours are rich. The audio output is magnific even with a dolby prologic decorder.

Weakness:

Not one.

Is a great product. The image is very very good, like the Pioneer DV 717, but is more sharp and clear.
I connect it to a Yamaha RXV 590 Dolby prologic decorder. The sound that this Sony produce is spectacular, and isn't, in my opinion, important to connect the DVD to a Dolby Digital decoder. Is e great satisfaction to ear the sond of films even in Dolby Prologic.
The mechanic is silent and stable, the headphones output is good too.
Well built, like ES series. The front panel is in aluminium not plastic, all pin jacks are gold plated.
WE can't desire a better product for the price!

Strength:

Features, easy to use & excellent video quality

Weakness:

Price (expensive)

About 10 years ago, I bought a single tray Sony CD player model CDP-590. Its useful features, easy to use, quiet operation (During disc spinning) & most important of all, reliability (It did not breakdown at all except occasionally it has difficulty tracking the first song on the disc. This occurred only about 2 years ago) make me a must to consider Sony brand again when buying a DVD player.
I bought the model DVP-S745D in September 2000. I guess this is the Asian version of the DVP-S735D except in Japan. They have another version - model DVP-S717D.
Maybe I was full of high hope therefore I was a bit disappointed when the noise generated during the disc spinning was audible.
DVP-S745D comes with built-in Dolby Digital & DTS decoder for DVD disc. Those DTS encoded audio only CDs will not work in this player. The built-in Dolby Digital & DTS decoder is not a useful feature for me since I already own a Dolby Digital & DTS decoder A/V receiver - the excellent Yamaha RX-V1000. Those holding on to a Dolby Pro-logic A/V amplifier with 5.1 channel input can continue to keep the amplifier & enjoy Dolby Digital & DTS encoded DVD with this player.
Few new mid-price DVD players have a headphone jack, Sony is one of them. It even comes with virtual 3D surround headphone, a feature useful for late night listening to movie soundtrack. In other words, I can enjoy the 3D experience while playing Dolby Digital, MPEG & DTS DVDs using a normal ordinary stereo headphone. One thing though, I need to push the volume control to almost maximum setting & at times the dialogue can sound echo. Again this feature is not so useful since my A/V receiver can do the job - the excellent Yamaha RX-V1000.
I tried the TV virtual surround mode but it only provides a slight sense of envelopment in my room. No big issue here since I have the Yamaha A/V receiver.
It is single tray single lens player therefore it does not play CD-R, CD-RW & MP3.
So what is good about this player?
Yes, the video image that it produces. The picture from the component video outputs looked pristine, deep & detailed. Images from the S-video output are just as good. The digital video enhancer provides a clear & crisp picture by enhancing the outlines of images on the TV screen. DVD "A bug's life" is simply jaw dropping. Tim Burton near monochromatic presentation of the "Sleepy Hollow" is excellent.
Surround sound steering from "Saving Private Ryan" (DTS encoded) & "Gladiator" (DTS-ES encoded) is fantastic. Since I did not utilize the built-in Dolby Digital & DTS decoder therefore I'm unable to commend its performance.
A DVD player can not match a dedicated CD player when playing a normal stereo CD may still stand true. Its stereo performance is good but lack the warmth, smoothness & musicality found in a dedicated CD player. I guess this apply to other DVD players as well. At times it can sound a little bit bright.
But surprisingly it performs very well when I slot in a DVD music disc (Sara K's Hobo). This is an excellent 24 bit/96 khz music disc (from Chesky record) filled with subtle percussion, harmonica, adequate bass & acoustic guitars. It may not be my taste of music but this Sony DVD player conveyed it transparently & output a lot of fine details. Very good channel separations even at low volume. I'm looking for new age DVD music, recommend them to me if u have. (Email: wong_teck_hong@hotmail.com)
Finally without a shadow of doubt, the picture quality has no faults that my naked eye can detect. I had a great time with this player & I hope it can last just as long as my Sony CD player.

My current components are -
1) Yamaha RX-V1000 A/V receiver (see my review on the A/V amplifier section)
2) Houston Mini 1998 tube amplifier
3) Sony DVP-S745D DVD player (multi-code)
4) Pioneer CLD-D580 LD player (with AC3 RF out)
5) Sharp VC-H81 NICAM stereo VCR
6) Mission M73 front L/R speakers
7) Kenwood CRS-15 center & rear speakers
8) Infinity RS-10 powered subwoofer
9) Toshiba 34N9UXE 34" TV

Strength:

Looks, picture quality, menus, overall quality

Weakness:

The machine keeps some noise, even when listening to CDs.

I bought 735 after reading lots of reviews, and I'm quite happy with it altough it was quite expensive. It's a fast machine, it takes only about 1.5 seconds to load a new disc, and it can store settings and such things for 200 DVDs or CDs. Only thing that I'm disappointed is the noise it keeps, I expected that a machine as expensive as it is would be silent but no.
