I have never owned another DVD player so I don't know what a sucky player looks/sounds like. I think this one is great. I paid MUCH less than retail for mine and I am very happy with it. I wish that somehow the remote sensor could be placed in the center of the unit instead of the side so that when I close my cabinet doors it would respond. And another minor point is that the round navigation button sometimes seems to slide over the on-screen hyperlink when I want to select it. Maybe there could be a way to make each on-screen selection more "rigid" and clean. We all know the positives of this machine, but hopefully some Sony engineeers are reading this to make the next one even better.

the Sony 7700 is my thrid DVD player since they first came out and i am most pleased with the 7700 performance ! First off build quality ...well it is overbuilt and that is a BIG plus ! Picture quality well on a 4:3 monitor Sony is the player to have with its 4 tap downconversion you will NOT have you suffering from video artifacts and interlacing problems . Most players do not do well at all with the 16x9 to 4:3 downconversion (the Toshiba 9000 being one which i had and brought back quickly) ! Audio well the 7700 maxes out at its digital outputs (very good) ! As a CD transport it is outstanding ...ok it will not beat the ultra high end transports BUT the 7700 will outperform many transports costing 3 times as much as the 7700 which is VERY VERY good ! Running to my MSB digital director and MSB Link DAC Elite reciever Acurus amp and onto my NHT Super2s ...well pretty amazing ! I highly reccomend the 7700 due to all around exceptional performance . price is up there but pride of ownership, build quality and exceptional DVD and CD performance make it a must have !

I got this DVD player about a month ago, after waiting about a month for it to arrive (this player is seriously understocked in Canada!!!). There is no doubt in my mind that the 7700 is significantly better than my old DVP S500D which I used for about a year. The picture quality is sharper, colors are vivid, and I feel the audio on DVDs is a tad crisper than my old S500D. However, I don't think the 7700 or my old 500D sounded particularly great when playing audio CDs. In my opinion, the soundstage when playing CDs sounded a bit compressed or confined, but this isn't a problem since I don't use my DVD player for playing CDs. The only problem I've encountered so far with the 7700 is that my particular player does not seem to be able to play the Rolling Stones Live at the Max IMAX disc properly. When I play this disc, I hear some louder than usual vibrations coming from the tray. I've tried two other copies but the problem still persists, however, the noise stops by the fourth track. This Stones disc is the ONLY disc where I've had this problem. Your thoughts and comments would be very much appreciated!! Do you guys think the problem lies with the software or with my Sony 7700??
THANKS

This is also my third DVD player and boy, it was well worth the upgrade! From the video quality viewpoint, the color saturation and its sharpness are breathtaking and it must be right on par with the others that cost two and three times as much. Then comes the transportability part, 7700 is right up there with big boys like Mark Levinson but a fraction of the cost. The second best part about this player besides its video performance must be the 96k/24b internal dac, I hooked it up using a pair of Wireworld Polaris interconnects via one its dual analog outs to my preamp and gosh! the air, transparency, details come from this player is just outstanding. What I am humbling about? Sony just got it right with this toy. Highly recommended!

I've seen a number of posts on this forum touting the DVP-S7000 over the DVP-S7700. I have both players (bought the 7700 for DTS) and have compared them side by side. The DVP-S7700 has a better picture, not by leaps and bounds, but there more detail.
As far as not passing blacker than black. Who cares? I have Avia and Video Essentials and when I set the black level to "correct" position, I think the picture is way too dark anyways. This whole calibration frenzy is overrated.

Well guys, I don't know where you are getting the fact that this DVD player has a sharp picture. I owned it for 2 months now and I think it has a very soft picture, to the point that detail is not much greater than my VCR. My first DVD was toshiba 3107 and the picture looked sharper(the way video should be), artifacts were negligible too. The build quality is good but who cares about build quality when the principal purpose of a DVD player is to offer the best possible picture and is not delivered. Considering price, I can only give it 2 stars.

I just purchased the Sony 7700 and I am very impressed. The picture is very sharp and clear. Dolby Digital and DTS sound are amazing. CD's never sounded so go to me.I own a 10 year old LUXMAN D-112 cd player with digital out. The sony sounds as good using its DAC's and through my amp even better.
I was going to purchase a Toshiba 3109 or a 9000 but I liked the sound, video, and remote of the Sony better.

My system consists of

Hitachi 36" Ultravision TV
Hitachi S772 SX5 S-VHS
Sony 7700
Yamaha DSP-A1 amp
RFT B-200
Monitor 9's
Paradigm CC-350
Paradigm Servo-15

Since I work in the industry directly for many years and have followed it when I haven't, I can say to qualify any Sony product over Denon is erroneous. The DVD-S7700 is only better than the Denon to many reviewers because it is better than the sludge at Sears, but they can't pop for the Denon. Psychological. Now that I've said that, I give the Sony four speakers- five should only be reserved for the true cream of the crop. We should not judge product on price range categories; let's throw em' all in together!

After owning this unit for over 7 months now, I believe it is fully deserving of all the accolades that have been applied to it here and elsewhere. However, it does have one major design flaw. It downconverts it's digital out signal to 24/48 instead of passing the full 24/96 stream. It seems as though Sony is more preoccupied with a few copyright pirates(a problem very much overblown by the industry as a whole) than with the rest of us- serious a/v consumers and the vast majority as a whole. Other than this, I feel the 7700 is an exceptional piece. However, this is Sony's flagship, and being such this fault will be inexcusable to some, like myself. Mine is up for sale, and my next DVD unit will either be a Pioneer or California Audio Labs.
