Strength:

Ease of use, build quality, picture ans sound quality

Weakness:

None

Owned a Toshiba 3109 for 4 months and just upgraded to 7700 and I am amazed at the difference in quality. The Toshiba seems like a piece of junk. The remote is much better and the whole design is much better. If you can afford it buy this DVD Player...it is the best!

Strength:

Excellent video picture, sound, features

Weakness:

Price

This is the best DVD player I have owned. I used to have a Pioneer 414 and a Sony 550, but they both suffered from the lip-sync problem. Returned them and got the 7700. No regrets buying it. One of the few players that has the capability to play CD-Rs.

Strength:

High build quality
Excellent sound and picture
Convenient remote control

Weakness:

Can't display darker-than-black
No digital zoom

This is the reference quality DVD player from Sony. The notable improvement from the older model 7000 is the new remote control. It retains the same great picture and sound quality you'd expect from Sony. When you compare two products with similar quality, the next thing you should compare is ease of use. The remote control that comes with Sony easily beats the pants off the competitors.

Strength:

Very relaxed player, Provides crisp highs and great bass extension.

Weakness:

Doesnt have 24/96 out, but www.msbtech.com do the modification.

Well, I have done my research. Out of the box, this sony player is the best I have come acoss, in direct compaison to a lot of other equip as listed. To me, it sounds the best. I am going to use a bel canto DAC 1 with it as a DAC.
Mainly I am going to use it as a transport. Anyway..
Forget what people say on these reviews. You have to listen to know. Trust your ears.

Strength:

Fast menu processing, cool forward/reverse, cool sliding panel, 2 set of outputs and s-link control

Weakness:

Can't read CD-RW and Music CD-Rs are skippy near end of track, remote needs work.

I like the build, it's SOLID (read: Heavy), and the sliding panel, though unnecessary, adds quite a bit to the 'ooooh' factor. I should say that I've seen DV-05(9?) Elite, and I prefer the Sony. I haven't seen the Toshiba, so can't compare. Some people say soft picture, but since I have no other reference, can't comment on that as well.

Color rendering is EXCELLENT, but cannot pass Pluge (black below black), so given this is a flagship, it won't get a 5 out of me. The menu is simplistic, but does its job. The bit rate is cool but doesn't separate video/audio. My friend bought a Sony DVD player (a 600 model or so), and that one has a LOT better looking menus, with more customization, and stuff. So I have to say, given the flagship-ness of this set, it's rather disappointing.

Can't say anything bad with the processing power - menus operated faster, I can press play, sit back, and the DVD plays. Some esoteric menus (with moving pictures, colors, etc) works fine, no mess whatsoever. Compare that with software DVD player on computers :). The Mummy DVD is a good example since everything is done seamlessly there, and this player goes through it like knife through butter.

The jog control is a bit weird, but I guess I can live with it. The cursor control is BAD though. I have an XBR remote, and I should say they should have made the control to use the same 'joystick' like element. I would have used my XBR remote to control the DVD, but then I lose the jog control, what a waste.

I like to group my music, burn them to CDR, and I have some CD-RWs for the 'NOW' songs (songs that are popular NOW), and I am disappointed that this unit cannot read CDRWs. It reads the CDRs fine, but (this might also be dependent on the CD Writer as well, but it does so on an Acer and Ricoh Writer) every time a track is almost finished (5 seconds or so), it skips that last 5 seconds, and starts the next track immediately. I understand the manual states that it supports Audio CD only (and not CDR), but I guess I'd like it to work flawlessly given the player's dual lens design.

Truthfully, flaws in dvd decoding can better be seen on large screens (Rear or front projectors), since given their size, the artifacts will be more visible. I have a 32 inch tube TV, and I can't see ANY fault at all for this player, given a good material. It even make my video CDs look better than on Computer, so I have to say this is a damn good player. The forward/reserve functions are nice, but I wish it could do it more smoothly, maybe when Processors can be embedded in devices with 300 MHz+ frequencies.

It's a tad expensive for a DVD player without DD/DTS decoder, even though it's a flagship, 4 stars for value. It does everything that it was designed to do, but failed in the passing black below black subject, so 4 stars for quality (overall).

I have the SONY DVP-S7000 and it can play CD-Rs but not CD-RWs. I was wondering if the SONY DVP-S7700 can play CD-RWs as well as CD-Rs. Has anyone tried this?

Just heard this player at my friends house and it is GREAT. I have a sony xa7es and the s7700 sounds just as good maybe even better. Picture and sound was first rate and the built quality was excelent. I find it hard to believe that the new Denon or any other dvd player will beat the sony s7700. I could not find and drawbacks to this player. Do yourself a favor and dont waist money on anything more expencive than this player because it wont be worth it. My friend has the same equiptment that I have.

Since I'm not living in the US can anyone outside of the US tell me if this unit is multizone capable? After reading a lot of reviews this unit seems to be one of the best. I'm planning to get it.
