Strength:

build quality, picture clarity, sound quality.

Weakness:

not progressive scan....nothing else!

I just read the previous guy's review giving the Sony DVP-S770 only 1 star. Are you a complete fool? You have no idea of what a true reference piece is. My DVP-S7700 I've had for over 2 years and it has NEVER failed me, ALWAYS provided a clear picture & quality sound and compares very favorably with newer, more expensive DVD/CD players currently available! If you had problems, you must have bought a refurb or abused it. Check yourself before wasting people's time with a 1 star rating. Audioreview.com would not have given this DVD player a 'Choice Award' before THOUROUGH testing and feedback. I love my DVP-S7700 and it is one of the greatest values in DVD, PERIOD! Check my FB on AudiogoN.com under Scubadaddy123....this is not my 1st rodeo! Enjoy!

I have owned this player for about 3 years now and have received no value for my money. The picture quality is not as good as many other cheaper players and this unit has stopped working twice before. Now it does not read DVD's...only audio CD's. I purchased a very expensive CD player. Do not consider this as a used unit!!!

Strength:

Wonderful picture Solid build quality Fast disc access and quiet operation

Weakness:

No progressive scan, but I'm not convinced it needs it yet. Won't pass blacker than black, but that's just a nuisance. Remote is bulky, but I don't use it much.

What a rock solid player! After over 3 years of flawless performance, I finally sold it to upgrade. During its time with me, I never had it freeze, never had it flicker. I couldn't have been happier with it. I didn't use it much as a CD transport, but I was very pleased with its performance as a DVD player. Only in the last 6 months have I really been able to see what the unit can do. 6 months ago, I upgraded to a Sony 40" XBR (replacing my 5 year old 27" Trinitron. I could not believe the picture I got on the 40" with the component hookups. Shrek and Pearl Harbor blew me away. The sound from the unit from movies was first rate. After a little hiccup when I tried to use a video cable in place of digital coax, the sound was phenominal. I enjoy music DVDs, and the sound has always been to my liking. I would actually buy this player over the entry level progressive scan units. My good friend has a silver Sony progressive scan DVD player hooked up to a 32" XBR Wega. I took my Star Wars Episode II disc over to his place the night after watching it on my setup. The picture quality wasn't even close. Even with the set properly calibrated, the picture on his setup was not nearly as clear and as balanced as the 7700 hooked up to the 40". It was hard to see the player go. My friend has wanted to buy it for a while. The wife just bought me a 9000ES for Christmas, so I'm willing to let the 7700 go since I'm getting an upgrade. I have to wait until Christmas to see how the 9000ES compares, but I'm hoping for good things. My friend will bring the 7700 back over during the holidays for a firsthand comparison. I'm looking forward to it.

not many, its quality is over rated I have a sony dvp/s5300 I bought for $25.00 used and works better than a $1000(list)dvp/s7700

Weakness:

read summary above

I was very impressed with the quality of this product as first, for the first 6m to 1 year it was a very good. The audio quality was good but far from what I expected , the video ability was as expected , no progresseive scan ability. I have recent problems playing DVD movies the machine seems to lock quite frequenty and skip during play, also the tray is not opening properly to remove disc.

Strength:

Very detailed and clear sound. Simple but effective use. plays CDRs.

Weakness:

Lack of scart connection. Sound is not very warm, lacks body and a bit of bass. Listened to S9000 and XA333ES and they obviously sound better.

I wanted to have a combo dvd/cd player of high quality on both so I expected to pay some 500 pounds per function. I bought this unit for a bottom price of 400 pounds, discounted from 1000, so al in all not a bad buy. I knew that the build quality should be good as it is in the ES range of Sony. I checked the thing out and the first thing I did, was connect it with a coax to my receiver, a V555ES from sony. I started playing my CDRs, which it did miraculously. I played some santana (supernatural) and the sound was soo detailed! I also played some rougher stuff on it without a problem, although it does sound a bit more digital, but not by much. I played some starwars theme music, which was incredibly detailed. very clear and clean sound. Playing DVDs was also satisfactory. I bought enemy at the gates, which I hadn't seen yet. I have to say I was a bit disappointed when after the first chapter, the dvd froze, like in the other reviews. I have tried several other dvd's and I didn't see the problem again. I can't compare the picture quality with other dvds as this is my first and only dvd. It looks good on my philips 28" widescreen pure flat tv and colors were very natural. Indeed the picture is not as sharp as it could be, but it doesn't bother me. The sound that the dvd produced was a bit disappointing. Not in quality, but the surround mode seems to be oriented on the front speakers. I never had this with my video, which uses analogue connections. This could have something to do with the room being very small and the speakers not being setup properly. The remote is fine. Don't see why people complain about it. It has nice big buttons, so even with parkinson you can't miss them. they glow in the dark, which can be handy when you darken your room. It does feel a bit cheap though. Connecting it was a bit of a nuisance. Although for sound, it was quite straight forward. I use 2 connections; one analogue for the cd function, and one coax for dvd sound. However, connecting the video lead was a bit dissappointing. there is no scart connection, only an s-vhs connection, which is inferior to scart. Also when using a convertor, you have to connect to an RGB scart otherwise no colors. This was actually the biggest disappointment. I like the lack of gadgets and features. Afterall you only watch movies and listen to music with it. Otherwise buy a computer!

Could anyone tell me how to use the thing only as transport and about connecting it through an external D/A converter?

Strength:

Stable and functional, great look and build quality.

Weakness:

The internal 24bit/96kHz make me disappointed. It is not up to standard.

Is it a great DVD/CD player? I agree that it can produce great picture, but it cannot produce great sound. The 24bit/96kHz audio DAC in this player does not sound better than my external 16bit/44.1kHz D/A converter. So I suggest users use this player as a DVD/CD transport and connect it will an external D/A converter to produce better sound. Indeed, it is a very good DVD/CD transport, stable and functional.

This player will play any DVD without a glitch. It has a slightly soft look in the picture. The build quality is up there with the best players on the market. The sound quality is good for movies but I would keep your high end CD player. It''s nice player to have in your system.

Strength:

Well Built

Weakness:

No progressive scan. Overpriced. No HDCD.

Just traded the Sony 7700 for the 5109. Sony is nice machine but got myself a Toshiba big screen with progressive scan and 5109 with progressive scan. Sony is good machine but TV's and DVD players behind the times without progressive scan. Also 5109 sounds way better for music with HDCD.

Strength:

Picture and build quality.

Weakness:

The picture quality is awesome and the build quality is like no other. I currently have this hooked up to an Onkyo Integra 939 THX receiver and the CD portion is AWESOME. THe sound could not be any better. I have compared the sound of this and it may be better than the Onkyo Integra CD player. The dual lasers in this product make this one that Sony should mimik with all of it's players. This is a true DVD reference player. I have not had this product long but, I love every aspect of this unit. The only problem I can forsee is that it will soon be replaced by a newer version that will contain Dolby Digital EX.. Other than that, there are no weaknesses.
