    Weakness:

    HAVENT FOUND ANY YET

I DID NOT KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN I FIRST BROUGHT THIS DVD HOME BUT WHEN I UNPACKED IT AND LISTENED TO IT, I COULDNT BELEIVE IT. I AM NOT SURE WHAT EVERYONE TALKS ABOUT BECAUSE MY PLAYER WILL PLAY COMPUTER CDR DISCS. I HAVE THE SONY 36XBR450 AND THE PROGRESSIVE SCAN PICTURE IS SO BEAUTIFEL!! I AM ALSO USING EXCELLENT COMPONENT VIDEO CABLES FROM MONSTERCABLE. ALL AROUND THIS PLAYER IS A WINNER. I HAVE SEEN MANY AND USED MANY PROGRESSIVE SCAN DVD PLAYERS BUT THIS ONE TAKES THE CAKE. I STILL CANT BELEIVE HOW GOOD A DVD LOOKS!! I CANT WAIT TO GET HDTV.

    Strength:

    Superb CD transport!

Much has been written, both here and in the press, about the Sony 9000ES' superb video performance. I won't elaborate on that here.
What many people may not realize is that this DVD player is a first-rate CD transport as well. In Perfect Vision, Robert Harley wrote that the Sony was competitive with $1200 CD players. However, as my preamp-processor has a superb DAC, I bought the Sony to use as a transport. To my pleasant surprise, it is 95%(!) as good a transport as my Sony SCD777ES CD Player, a $3500 unit which Stereophile singled out for its outstanding transport.
Considering this DVD player also plays SACD's, is widely recognized as a first-rate DVD-video player, plays CD's at the level of a high-end CD player, AND is a top-tier CD transport, this unit is IMHO an amazing bargain. Thank you Sony!

    Strength:

Simple & elegant design, video, & SACD

I bought this unit for mainly its progressive capability. I liked my old 530D and decided to upgrade with the top of the line Sony. I am quite pleased with audio and video portion of the DVD. What has been a pleasant surprise for me has been the SACD playback. I have started to purchase more SACDs than DVDs. The sound coming out of my system is simply heavenly. I'm no audiophile and I can't purchase equipments in the range of several tens of thousands. My humble system consisting of Nak AV-10, Monitor Audio Silver 7i, 3i, Center 10i, ASW 110 sub has never sounded better. Obcourse I listen to SACD with 7is only with no sub.

    Strength:

Progressive Scan Component 480p output. Ominous looks.

    Weakness:

Buttons on front hard to read. No Home Brewed CD-R Playback.

This beautiful machine was everything I had hoped for, except for the lack of CD-R playback. If you buy this machine you MUST use the Component outputs with a 480p (Progressive Scan) compatible television to fully appreaciate the stunning image this machine produces. I have it hooked up to a Sony Wega KV-32XBR400. This setup yields the best possible image:

    - The DVD player extracts the 3:2 pulldown and recreates the original 24 frame film sequence. This eliminates interlace tearing.
    - This is fed at double the normal frame rate (60 Frames) Progressive Scan to the television (480p) to eliminate flicker.
    - Component video (YUV) hookup eliminates chroma crawl, dot crawl and a host of other video ailments. This is very important to getting a good image.
    - The Television line quadruples the image (2X Horizontal and 2X Vertical.
    - 16:9 anamorphic squeeze improves resolution even further with letterboxed DVDs.

All This adds up to image quality that will knock your socks off. If you like to burn VideoCDs at home and play them on your DVD player... this will not work on this player. My home brewed audio CDs don't work either. If you can afford this machine then you can afford to keep your old DVD player around for these purposes.

I'm sure it's a great SACD player as well, but I'm not qualified to speak on that topic. I will say that NO SACD player on the market today will output digital audio (optical or coax) when playing a SACD. This is for copy protection reasons. Audio will show up at the analog outputs when playing SACD. This is not a problem for me since my Sony 555ES amp will automatically switch to the correct imput.

    Strength:

    5 Year Warranty

    Weakness:

    CR-R playback

Picked this used in Mint condition unit up on EBay for a low $ 800.00 (with the remote, etc) so I saved about $ 300.00 to $ 400.00. This is one well built unit.

Very quite transport (as the Sony DVP-S7700 was) and a great quality picture. Compared to the over priced Pioneer DV-38A I had that was not as good of picture and noisy (yes you could hear the disc spin in the Pioneer units !!).

    I have it connected to:

    Sony TA-E9000ES pre-amp with 2.01 software
2 Sony TA-N9000ES amps running in BTL mode
    Klipsch RF-3 for L/R Fronts
    Klipsch RC-3 for Center
    Klipsch KSW-12 Powered Sub

I purchased DVP 9000ES in January. Last week the player just died in the middle of a movie. It will power back up but will only play for about 1 hour then it dies again. I have tried several different movies to make sure it is not the disc. I took the unit in for repair and the technician said, "Oh we have seen several of these units and have been unable to fixed the problems" I asked why and he replied " This is just a poorly designed machine". So for $1300 I am not very happy that I had a major faliure after only 6 months of use. Has anyone else experience this probelm or other problems? I strongly considering finding a DVP 7700 and just sell this unit on ebay even after it is repaired.

    Strength:

Sweet right out of the box. Progressive Scanning, SACD. Really Good CD play back. Bang for the Buck

    Weakness:

Small buttons on the front panel hard to read from a distance

I just got this DVD player two weeks ago. I have a friend who can get me sony products at a considerable discount, but anyway.

I have been slowly upgrading my system and this has been a very welcome addition. The progressive scan fed into my Pioneer Elite Pro 610HD seems to be a match made in heaven. The colors, clarity to put simply are great. This player will be with me for a long time. I am slowly going over my growing collection of movies and some of the movie seem as if I am seeing them for the first time all over again. And I haven't done any calibration as of yet. I would imagine it could only get much better.

The music on standard CD's sound great. Open, smooth highs and nice tight bass. Vocals sound more real compared to the 7700 and any stand alone CD player I currently own. This was right out of the box. To say that I am pleased is an understatement. If I had a choice I wouldn't wait for the break in period. I play movies and music every night. I would recommend this to any one with a system that can show you the full potential of what this player has to offer. I have ordered my first SACD can't wait for it to arrive. I have been bitten by the audiophile bug. I now want a seperate stereo for just music.

    My system:
    Sony DVP-S9000es
    Sony TA-9000es
    Sony TAN-9000es
    Pioneer Pro610HD
Sony SS4TL tower spks (main) soon to be replace with BW 804's
Sony bookshelf speaker for rear (don't remember model#)
Sony small center channel (don't remember model#)
    Sony 101 subwoofer ? (don't remember model#)want to replace with a sunfire

    Cables:
    Audioquest Coral interconnects
    Audioquest Type 4 speaker wire

first and foremost, 9000es is a dvd player - and as a bonus, it comes with sacd and also plays cd....

if you are looking for a great sounding cd player, then buy a dedicated cd player...

if you are loooking for a sacd player, then by all means go for a dedicated sacd player...

such a simple thing fellow reviewers... so just keep your comments to what the product is supposed to do as a primary function...

    Strength:

Solid build, audio, video, prog. scan, SACD

    Weakness:

Layer change seems no different than the old 530D model

I can't believe that you guys in the US are getting this for under $1,000! No bargains here in HK! I must however gloat that my unit is region free (all HK DVD players are) and it is champagne color. All audio/video equipment are champagne color here in HK. It even plays Charlies' Angels, which has RCE.

Compared to my previous players, this unit is built like a tank and is heavy. Video is much better since it is progressive. Audio sounds better to my untrained ears or I may be justifying my expensive purchase.

SACD is nice, but I have only heard a demo that comes with it. I will have to hear more before passing judgement.

The unit is a thing of beauty and it plays very quite. It's got everything but DVD audio. I am happy with the purchase and hope that I won't have to replace this expensive unit for a while.
