I gotta say, John must be an idiot to say this is not a true progressive scan player. This is not a line doubler unit like the pioneer 414 and technologies used by many TVs. If would have done some research, you find out that the Sony s9000es uses the Genesis chip like many progressive scan players. Sony even went furthur and tweak the chip for better progressive output. This is a true progressive unit with 480p. Next time try using the component outs and feed it to a TV that can accept progressive signals like an HDTV unit before you come in here make an ass of yourself.

I've never used this product before. I basically just want to say Edgar Marcano IIIs review makes him appear quite the a@#hole. Not everyone's daddy left them a lot of money so they could sit by the pool with a cigar and say, "MONEY! hahahahahaha" Don't belittle people for not having that luxury, Sir A@#hole III. You must have quite an extensive family because I see a@#holes all the time these days.

    Strength:

    Progressive Scan is a knockout
    SACD is incredible
    Built like a tank
    Cosmetics of museum quality

    Weakness:

    None

I have been waiting for this player since I first got a sniff of it last August. I have a Toshiba 61" HD ready RPTV. Prior to getting this unit, I could see scan lines on DVD's where predominantly red colors were in the scene. With the progressive scan engaged line doubler, however, that is a thing of the past. No scan lines, and all colors and particularly fleshtones are rendered absolutely lifelike(and this is before I have even plugged in the Avia disk to calibrate the progressive input from the player)

SACD is truly an amazing invention. The sampler disk Sony provides contains tracks I have listened to many times and am still amazed. I don't really care for Willy Nelson in the least, but his cut on the sampler is the most lifelike, "being there" experience I have ever heard produced from a disk. I have already ordered 15 SACDs from Acoustic Sounds. I am truly hooked on this new format.

It does trouble me slightly that we have another VHS/Beta war here with DVD-A and SACD, and no one knows at this point who will win. I saw an ad for Circuit City that they are now selling JVC DVD-A players for $599. Sony must get their pricing for SACD down quickly, and get it into retail outlets or this war could be over before it really starts. Even if SACD does not win out in the end, this unit is well worth the change I paid for DVD video only.

Regarding my purchase location. I have no connection to these guys at all, but the Oade Brothers are top notch-good ole' boys from northern Florida. I have purchased quite a bit of ES gear over the years and it has always bothered me that everybody has ALWAYS charged MSRP for the entire line. Almost like there was an added air of sophistication to ES since you could only get it at MSRP. Their price is incredible. The unit arrived double boxed, brand new with US warranty and all the current promotional items.

    Strength:

Picture, progressive scan, sound in CD mode, SACD playback, looks, build quality.

    Weakness:

It has trouble reading CD-R made with DATA CDs, but plays AUDIO CDRs. Expensive, especialy in CANADA, but worth every penny even on its audio capabilities alone !

For the last week I have tried burning CD-Rs to play in my DVP-S9000ES.

I have tried Sony, Fuji, Kodak, Verbatim, Maxell and Memorex without success.

Many people claimed success with some of those brands so I started to wonder if my problem could be my burner (and it might be in a way) but today for a last try, I bought one of those Audio CD-R that recently came on the market and Bingo ! It worked !

It was a Kodak Audio CD-R Gold, I guess other "Audio" CD-Rs would also work.

Now people who were holding buying that fine piece of gear, because it would not play CD-Rs can now go spend their money !!!

    Strength:

Great Menu System, Simple set up and stunning video performance.

    Weakness:

    None

A very great improvement having a progressive scan DVD when combined with the Sony 32" XBR Hi Def Television, which I also purchased. I had self doubts about purchasing a second DVD player, when I was satisfied with the Denon. However, it took 10 minutes to realize it was a great purchase.

The colors are superb, as is the clarity of the picture. It just simply is the best I have seen. It looked great in the store, but was even better at home. I based my selection on reviews I had seen on this web site, which were right on the money for the most part. Could not be happier.

I did not purchase this unit for audio purposes (SACD), but I will give it a try soon.

    Strength:

    everything

    Weakness:

    none for this price

This player for the money does everything right and is the best money to quality ratio piece of gear i ever bought. The video is superb,cd play back is on par with 1000.00 or more players and i think sacd is the format for the future after listening to it.I do have to admit that my ic's,digital ic and powercord cost more than the player itself, but the 9000 seems to be deserving of them.Highly Recomended
