    Strength:

Build quality, Progressive scan picture, Amazing CD player, Remote Control, All the fine tweaking you can do, Appearance (cool blue light)

    Weakness:

Wish it played DVD-Audio as well (I can dream can't I)

Connected to my ISF calibrated 53" Hitachi HDTV, you would swear you were looking out a window on a clear day. The progressive scan picture is absolutely beautiful. Every DVD I have watched just looks outstanding. Once I have a few more viewings I will post another review. Listening to CD's has turned into a totally new experience. Music jumps from my PSB's. So far IMHO this is the "Reference standard DVD player". For $2000 Can, this machine ROCKS!!!!

I am having trouble playing CD-R's (i know the manual says no, but I have read posts where this has been sucessfuly done) Can you please help with the following - Please email me.
I have tried Maxell 74minute music CDR's and Fuji 80 minute music CDR's both recorded at 1x per the previous posts. PS my 7700 seemed to take anything recorded at any speed.

For those of you that have gotten this to work reliably please let me know the (1) brand name (2) length of disc (80 vs 74 vs ?) (3)speed recorded (1X etc)

I really appreciate the help and have a merry holiday.

    Strength:

Quality of video and audio output.

    Weakness:

    SACD v DVD-A

Amazing DVD player. I have no progressive capable TV though the S out is as good as it gets.

Its as if you get the CD player (and SACD) for free.

SACD is killer. I hope that the quality wins vs. patent/license issues. Probably another betamax (or even MD?). For me, its the soundstage that sets it apart from CD.

The CD section is amazing for the price. Pretty nice I must say. Ive compared the CD with an older Sony ES piece, some CAL and Rega players. Darn good value.

I bought it for the DVD (progressive) and SACD capabilities, when I heard it alos played CDs I jumped on it.

    Strength:

    Everything.

    Weakness:

Not really a w4eakness, but it would be nice to play multiple DVD's.

Well my experience is much better than the two gentleman who claim no CDR support. I think they should look at other reviews before they make the blanket statement that this Sony does no play CDR's. That is simply not ture. I have played my entire collection of CDR's with no problems at all. Sound quality is outstanding. Picture quality has to been to be believed.

The quality of the materials used it outstanding. My previous DVD player was great, but very light and cheaply made. Not so with the 9000ES. Now I just wish Sony would make a comparable receiver to match it.

    Strength:

Build quality, picture, sounds, SACD format. The aesthetics are the best of any player I have seen on the market, and it plays just as beatifully as it looks. If you have the means, I would pick it up.

    Weakness:

I'm still looking for one. It's a little pricey, but I think it's fair.

Nothing more I can really offer in to what has already been said.

    Strength:

Everything - build quality, design, audio/video reproduction....absolutely mesmerizing performance! 5 yrs warranty from SONY on all ES products!!

    Weakness:

I wish it were compatible with the DVD-Audio format also; it is only SACD compatible, which is kind of a SONY proprietary format. At this time, nobody knows which of these formats will survive the game!

As I said earlier, the unit provides for a most incredible performance. In this price range, nothing else comes close.

I got a great deal on it too. Although, the best deal online is available at Oade Brothers (www.oade.com) for $1075, they are 3-4 weeks out-of stock. I got my unit from J & R Audio Video (www.jandr.com) for $1210. They have more than 40 units in stock right now! Talk to Elton at extension 1054. No, I am not getting any commission from him :-)

I saw this review in other place. I feel this might
be help for some people. This unit will not play
DVD-Audio. Will it be the problem.
    -----------------------------------------------------

I visited a HK DVD newsgroup, and I was told that there were some problems on the Sony
S9000ES. The progressive output didn't seem to work correctly.

A guy bought a modified (all code) region 2 Sony S9000ES player, and connected it to his
Seleco800 projestor with progressive scan connector. No picture! He took the player back to the
store, and tried it on a Japanese FD WEGA TV with progressive scan connection. It worked! He
thought there was a problem on his projector, so he took the player and the projector to the
Seleco dealer to check what the problem was. Interestingly, they found out that some of the DVDs
would work with the 9000ES+projector+progressive scan, but most of them wouldn't! Even the
one worked with this combo, the picture quality was worse than the one you can find on Pioneer
progressive scan player. He finally returned the Sony 9000ES and got a Pioneer S10A.

Well, we have no idea the problem only happened on one 9000ES or every 9000ES in the market
since we have tried only one of them. However, if you want to get this player because of its
progressive scan output, you better check it very carefully. No, we don't think that the problem was
caused by changing the player firmware because all of the DVDs worked fine via s-video output
    but not progressive scan.

    Hope this helps.

    Strength:

Awesome DVD performance, good CD player, Awesome with SACD playback

    Weakness:

could be price....nothing else for a DVD player

First, for a dvd player this unit has awesome cd output. More detail than the planet and about as good as a high end Rotel. You would have to pay at least a $1000 or more to get better performance.
Put SACD into the mix and you couldn't beat it as a player with high end units costing $5000!!! (on cd that is...)
DVD performance is second to none. Beats out elite 37 model from pioneer as well as Technics DVDA player. From what if read it also out performs Toshiba 9200 no problem. The only unit that compete's with it is the H1000 for pana...which costs twice as much, and doesn't sound as good.
5 stars easily for this unit.

    Strength:

    Solidity, style, SACD, video

    Weakness:

    None

I've listened to and looked at several DVD players, but the multitude of features of Sony's DVP S9000ES were sufficient to convince me to purchase it. Most of my admittedly short experience with the S9000ES has been with CDs, which to my hearing have never sounded better. Mahaliah Jackson singing "Be Still My Heart," and other songs, Miles Davis's "Kind of Blue," solo harp, a Miaskovsky symphony, Schubert Impromptus all made for sumptious musical participation as well as background listening. Even with my limited time for listening, I find that SACD offers another advancement to recreate musical performances, withdrawing yet another veil between listener and recording. As to DVDs I cannot at present much comment since we have yet to buy a suitable TV. What little video we have seen from the S9000ES on a small-screen TV certainly surpasses cable, but progressive scanning and 3-2 film pull-down will remain elusive until we connect the S9000ES to a capable TV.

    Strength:

    Picture Quality.
DVD-Memory function, even remembers to skip the intros.
Awesome jog shuttle, even plays backwards.

    Weakness:

Complex to setup, defaults are not optimized for HT. Strange faceplate, maybe an artistic statement, but not so handy. little documentation on it's advanced imaging features/adjustments.

I bought the Fantasia 2000 DVD for Christmas but should have bought this player at the same time. When playing it on my old Pioneer 414, the animations looked like they were drawn by a four year old, jagged edges all over the place. I've been wondering for months how this DVD could be getting so many great reviews. Now that I have the 9000ES, I know. Images are awesome and fully adjustable. Sound is crystal clear with absolutuly no background noise. I've now watched about a dozen DVDs and can ohnestly say that I've not seen any artifacts or noise whatsoever. For a true delight check out Dinasour. This sort a thing is my bag baby.

I haven't had a chance to thoroughly evaluate the CD & SACD sound, but so far no complaints.

Bottom line is: in this case you do get what you pay for.
