Portability

Weakness:

Quality

Great portability, same bad Sony quality. This would be my third portable Sony DVD/CD unity that has failed on me. Currently the unit will not play any DVD/CD/VCD, I get the infamous C13 error. Will never buy another Sony disc player on any sort.

Strength:

Portability, great picture and sound.

Weakness:

Remote has no separate fast forward key, the same key does that and also skips to next chapter, hard to control, one mis-step and you lose your place.

Classy looking silver body, small and light, only slightly thicker than portable CD player. Full set of controls on top lid besides the remote. It does get quite warm when used but no problems with the unit so far. I bought a small camera bag to keep it and the power cube, interconnect cable, and remote, so it travels quite well. Great to take with you on trips or to friends/relatives houses who do not have DVD. There is no screen, so this is not a complete viewing solution, there must be a TV to use, and it must have a video in jack. You could of course buy a modulator to make the output channel 3 or 4 from Radio Shack, but that would defeat the better picture idea in the first place! A little pricy.

Has a cable on mini jack to 3 RCA's for video, Right, Left. Also has an S-video out jack for TV so equipped (better picture) but the composite out is startling good! I took this to Florida and hooked it up to Sony and the people who had never seen DVD thought the picture was fabulous. It's so good only a direct comparison to a high end home player can reveal any differences. Also has a digital out on a mini-disc optical jack, and a head phone jack with volume control. It can output Dolby Digital 5.1 (no DTS out). I have tried this at home into a digital converter, sound is great. The sound is also very fine from the normal analogue out. So I am very pleased with the unit. Being plastic, it seems a little delicate, but I have had no problems. The discs must be pushed down gently to snap onto the spindle (they don't just lie on it) and if this is not done right, the disc will wobble when started and stop to give error message, but this is not a problem when you get used to inserting the discs.

Longevity remains to be seen, so far so good.

I have had a lot of enjoyment from this unit. Great purchase. It's a miracle when you consider what electronic wizardry is packed into such a small object!

Strength:

It sure is portable!

Weakness:

Its durability does not match its price.

I almost passed on buying the unit because the Japanese version has a SCSI port and the US version does not. I looked beyond this when I found a good internet price.

The unit sure is portable, but 'walkman' is not quite true. It does not fit in 'walkman' carry cases.

My DVD 'walkman' spent five weeks in the shop waiting on new heads from Sony. Five weeks following repairs, it is failing again. It definitely has overheat problems and I certainly do not treat it abusively.

To me, a DVD player has no business being the size of a VCR. On this point, the Sony offering is wonderful!
