Strength:

Build Quality, remote control, sound, Dolby Digital/DTS processing

Weakness:

Lack of DVD Audio software

I just bought this unit a few days ago and have listened to quite a few CD's, DVD's and the provided DVD audio sampler that is included with the product. Here is how this unit stacks up with other product.

Build Quailty: I was astonished by the build quailty of this unit. I personally think it betters any DVD or CD player in the sub $1000 price range. In fact, I would compare it to any DVD or CD player in the $2000 price range in terms of build quailty. It weighs in at 19 pounds and the internal parts take up every inch of the chasis. The chasis is very compact. It has a nice champagne finish and a stiffening compound on the bottom of the chasis for extra dampening--similiar to the Toshiba 9100. Moreover, it has a very sold tray that is made of the same stiffening compound used at the bottom of the chasis. The unit feels rock solid and in very impressive for a $1000 DVD/CD player.

Sound: I listned to CD's through the players analouge outputs. I was very impressed. It is very detailed, yet smooth and liquid sounding. It was not bright whatsoever. Again, I think it rivals the sound from any CD of DVD player in the $2000 or below price range. I would certainly put it at the top compared to any unit in the $1000 price range. The bass is very srong and the high notes have lots of power and snap. The midranage is not quite a liquid sounding as some expsnive players, but it pretty good. Vocals sounded very transparent. I am not as happy with the DVD audio playback. I can only judge this based on the sampler disc that was provided. It sounded good, but no better than any music DVD I've listed to. Hopefully, once more software is available, I will be able to take advantage of its DVD-audio capabilities.

I am using the units internal Dolgy Digital and DTS decoders and am very happy with audio processing. The movies I watched were very dynamic. Diaologue came through very naturally. I would certainly rate the processing with any $1000 receiver such as the Onyko 676 or Denon 3300. It also has lots of set-up flexibility allowing you to set delay, speaker size and it has pink noise for setting speaker volume adjustmenst.

Picture: I thought the picutre quality was very high. The movies I watched were very saturated with colors and very detailed, but not etched--it produces a very smooth and natural picture. I previoulsy owned a Toshiba 9100 with progressive scan. I would not rate the picture as well as a progressive scan picture, but it was certainly as good as any picture I've seen from a non-progrssive scan source.

Overall: I think this unit is an amazingly outstanding value. You get excellent build quailty combined with superior picture and sound quailty along with superior Dolby Digital and DTS decoding for a unit priced at $1000. In my opionion, there is nothing close to this value currently out in the market. As I said abovie, I previously owned a Toshiba 9100. I thought very highly of the 9100 and still do. However, for the cost, I think this Technics edges the Toshiba in build and sound quailty. The tradeoff for me was giving up progressivbe scan for DTS decoding. I have no regrets.

Given the price for this unit, I have to give it 5 stars. I would probably give it 4 stars if it was selling for $2000, but is has so much to offer so little price.

This is a very cool state of the art equipment, The sound is very!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!cool, everything is right on money,
the remastering feature is very nice.

DVD Audio is the best sure ther is sacd but man Why pay so much money for that? DVD audio is the best and least expensive of the two, surround sound is the (Future God willing )and Technics even gives you a demo disc with it denon does not.

What I have learned about this brand of dvd player is never belive everyone because everybody has different taste.
I almost did not buy this because of a article I had read.
But you know after I took my chance I am very very very glad I did not listen to that magazine.

Because this is so awesome Freinds dont take my word for it
Look for a dealer and hear it yourself You will be very happy.

God bless and Jesus loves you guys

Strength:

Build Quality, Visual Impact *looks*, DVD Quality, Audio Quality, DVD Audio, Remote, Onscreen Functions, did I mention looks!?!?!

Weakness:

perhaps I little sensitive to the quality of the CD surface.

Just picked this unit up, all I can say is wow!! (lie actually...I can say alot more =] This is a very very nice unit, it has a solidity that the toshiba 9100 almost has. Now this may be haresy to some of of you but the initial reason for purchasing this unit is actually for CD sound. I know there are alot of consessions made when purchasing a DVD unit for audio, but with this unit I do not feel like I coped out at all. I wanted something that could do more than one trick.

The s0uNd:

I am running Snell Acousitc Speakers (forget model number) *hard to find these buggers* a rotel preamp *again sorry I forget the number* with a Quad 401 amp, I am using about 600 dollars worth of interconnects, and I will post the cables I am using at a later date. I also run Magnapan Speakers...again I am soooo sorry but I forget the model number of them, they are about half the hight of the taller speakers...some of you know the ones I speak of, and I have a mission external DAC. All in all I suprisingly good unit for the money, as I have picked up most of it second hand.

The sound is fantastic, I am using a Rotel Transport that has seen it's days and crapped out, so this was a new experience. Though I had tried the above mentioned products from other manufacturers they failed to impress on the sound side of things, that to be expected from units costing half as much. The Toshiba 9100 is a fantastic unit in the same price area, but I had no need for progressive scan.

I have never...NEVER heard the *hunter* sound that good before, The base coming from those speakers was so far beyond what I had ever heard it flat out obliterated all preconcieved notions of what my speakers where capable off. I actually got up and checked to make sure my sub was turned off *an engery unit* and unpluged it just in case. With the Remastering function the front of the soundstage seems to explode...so this is what a new cd player is supposed to sound like =] details showed up, for instance I could hear the violin bow moving across the strings, you know that texture you get from them when you hear it live. coughs from the audience, that slight hiss you hear from wind passing by a reed from a reed instrument like the sax. I really can't express myself here properly. I know there are units that cost far more, that will kick this one all over the place, but when I compare this one to what I had, I have to say that I am just as easily happy with this one as someone would be with a $4000 meridian etc. The sound is not edgy at all, and is warm, not bright, the dynamic difference with the remastering on is amazing, I simply did not know my speakers where capable of that kind of sound, the base...for the first time in my life had to be turned down, and infact I just set it for a flat response and it worked perfectly.

The option to have the display lights turn off when something starts playing is just fantastic. When you select this feature it will turn off the lights of the unit automaticly when a disk or dvd starts playing, they dim down till they are off...very slick. the momend you hit a button on the remote, like a major function, pause, stop, etc, the lights turn back on like theatre lights...again just a nice feature and makes this unit FEEL rich. I have not tried out the DVD Audio, since I have the demo unit until my unit is ordered in. But I look forward to hearing it, if what it can do with my current collection is any indication of what it will do with this exciting new medium then I can't wait. especially the 192khz/24bit stereo.

I will write more as I find out more. This is not a super super high end unit, but it is freaking high end enough for me, and I do have sensitive ears, I just know that happieness will not be found with a 5000 dollar unit.

Love this, and very very happy....did I mention the Women dig it
