Strength:

Sharp Picture,Good channel seperation, Can be found at great prices

Weakness:

Remote

I got mine from Mobshop($159.95 delivered). It isn't a fair fight between my Pioneer and the Toshiba. It would be like putting ALI against Tyson, both great fighters but two different times! I can not add more than what has been said. The Toshiba is a great unit!!!

Strength:

Value, versatility and features

Weakness:

a little noisy, but not too bad

This player never has any problems with any rented disc (so far about 20 DVD with various physical quality). Layer transition is smooth as silk. The Raite I used before can play MP3, but playing DVD (even some VCD) made it hiccuped far more than I can tolerate. Guess, I have to wait until MP3 is adopted my mainstream manufacturer (I'm not holding my breath though)

Picture quality is as good as any with composite 27' Panasonic. Enhanced black makes me lose too much shadow detail and I don't want to change brightness everytime I play DVD to compensate. Zoom feature is interesting and really useful. This one plays VCD, the supposedly replacement model (SD 1600) does not, which is important because I have a lot of VCDs. This player can play Sony CD-R, the one that is labeled for 12X burner, but that's the only CD-R that works. The old Sony (6X), Maxell and cheap CD-RW does not work. That is fine because I have a Dreamcast (and a Playstation) hooked up to the receiver if I really want to play old CD-R.

CD player quality is fine, but I'm not an audiophile and this is the best CD player in the house (did you read that I have a DC and a PS).

Overall a very good DVD player, especeially for the price.

I had previously read this poll and was looking at the 1200, but I have Sony equipment and really wanted my stuff to match. I purchased an out-of-box sony 5300 for cheap from bestbuy. I rented the Mummy. It must have stalled 20 times. I even carefully cleaned the disc, but still paused. Upset, I returned player to bestbuy and swaped for toshiba 1200. Sales guy tried to tell me it was the DVD. Not true AT ALL! I've only played a couple of DVD's since but have not encountered a SINGLE skip or pause including that rental (Mummy). I think it's a great player, just wish the sonys were that good.

Strength:

Great audio and video. Zoom feature. Coaxial digital output.

Weakness:

Would not play "Blues Brothers" DVD

I won't go into a long review of how great this player is for the money. I echo all of the praise voiced in the previous posts.

I've only had the player two weeks, and am very happy with it. So far, I've bought "Fight Club", "Saving Private Ryan", "The Matrix", and "Pink Floyd's The Wall". All have played flawlessly.

I did, however, run into a problem with the "Blues Brothers" DVD. The player would attempt to play the disc for several seconds and then show a "disc error". I exchanged the disc for another copy, which did the exact same thing. So far, this is the only title I've had any kind of problem with. Otherwise I've been very happy with the player.

Did any of the other SD1200 owners here have a problem with the "Blues Brothers" DVD?

Strength:

Great price and cool features for the money

Good product for the money. Sound and video are both excellent and comparable to to other products costing twice as much. I also got a good deal at mczone.com for $189 and have heard others have even got it as low as $169. Good luck shopping. You can't go wrong with this unit.

Strength:

Excellent sound and picture

Weakness:

Weak drawer mechanism.
Clicking noise when disc is spinning.
Sometimes audio gets garbled, requiring a restart.

If you are like me, you aren't going to buy a DVD player to play games with zoom, freeze frame, etc. What I believe most consumers are looking for are a well built machine that delivers a high quality picture and audiophile sound.

The Toshiba delivers on sound and picture, but not on manufacturing quality.

For $200-$250, maybe I shouldn't be so picky, but here are my gripes:

1. The tray is flimsy, wiggling up and down.
2. The machine weighs about 3-4 pounds.
3. There is a ticking sound while the disc is spinning that can be heard from my listening position 13 feet away.
4. The CD sound is better through the RCA outputs than the coaxial cable.
5. In order to return to a prior track, you have to double click the back arrow, and even then it's hit or miss.
6. On some occasions on DVD, when the movie starts, the audio is undiscernable. If the DVD is removed and then reinserted, this corrects the problem.

Strength:

Great value. Good picture even on my old Magnavox TV. I apparently need a new television now. Zoom is necessary for me since so many rental DVD's are in widescreen. One click of the zoom and you lose little on the sides and gain a lot vertically.

Weakness:

The remote is hard to use as others have stated. Needs to have the most used features in larger buttons. The picture is a little pixelly but may be because of old TV with lower vertical res than newer models.

Overall, I am very pleased. Easy to hookup and use. Wanted entry level to reduce pain of upgrading later when I am more familiar with DVD or progressive scan is more popular and cheaper.

Strength:

Great price, great features for the price, great picture, great sound.

Weakness:

I can live with the remote but what is with not being able to skip tracks backward? Why do have to stop the CD and skip forward to hear a previous track? What is with that?

I am truly amazed at the picture and sound quality improvement of this Toshiba 1200 over my $500.00 Pioneer LD. I am glad I didn't ever really get into LD purchases as DVD is a serious step up. I've been using the Pioneer mostly as a CD player as LD has gone the way of the Dino and virtually no rental outlets exsist in my neck of the woods.
Like many of you out there I got mine at MobShop.com for $159.99 free shipping. After reading the reviews on this site I just couldn't leave this kind of quality behind at that price. Well, it was money well spent! I hooked it up with the factory cables and was pleased. I read some more reviews here and next day went to Radio Shack and got the Gold series audio/S-video combo and WOW! I didn't know may JVC Dolby ProLogic amp could make those sounds! I am looking now for a Yamaha RXV 595a/HTR 5150 to take advantage of the DD-5.1/DTS features on this puppy and I expect to be blown away.
Picture? I'm pumping all that digital video into my 55" Hitachi Ultravision (a vidio high performer in it's own right at 1000 line res. capable) and I couldn't be happier. I've never waited so long to take advantage of improved technology but to be frank, I really didn't think DVD would fly. I'm glad I waited as the price I paid was the icing on the cake. MobShop still has them but has hardend up on the price and the best you can do now is $190.00 (still a good deal) I would have bought it at that price.
I'm sure there are better players on the market, hence the 4 star overall, but for the quality and features you cannot do better.
The remote? Get over it people! Figure it out, press play-watch movie! Geez!
