Strength:

Picture and audio otstanding

Weakness:

Doesn't play CD-R's

The quality of play of DVD's on this player is excellent. The picture is crystal clear and the Dolby Digital and DTS support are what make this player as good as any other. Obviously I wish it played CD-R's, but not too many DVD players support CD-R. I already have a CD player, so it's not that important. I found that it does play CD-RW's. I guess we'll just have to wait for DVD audio before the CD-R support. The remote is kind of small, but I usally watch a movie from begining to end without touching the remote.

This isn't much for a CD player because it only holds one disc at a time. I like having separate components anyway.

This is a great addition to any low or very high end stereo system, and it blows those 700 dollar players out of the water in price.

Strength:

Cheap, Zoom, Picture Quality, Reads CD-RW

Weakness:

Remote, Doesn't support CD-R, No optical out.

Good:
This make a great first dvd player. The picture quality is great as well as the sound. I love the zoom function when I'm watching 16:9 but rather have something around 4:3 without much loss of picture quality.

Bad:
Doesn't read CD-R but CD-RW are accepted. I just created a VCD on a CD-RW and it works. The remote could use some work because its very hard to use in the dark. Fast forwarding is rather jumpy, Sonys are smoother. As for the guy with sound problems,(It should be the review below on 9/6/00) I think the problem is your receiver because I don't have that problem. (Yamaha RX-V596) By the way, you paid too much for a digital coxial cable. Digital coxial cable is a FRAUD!!!!. DVD's bit rate is usally < 10 Mbits per second. Category 5 cable for computers can handel 100Mbits per second and cost at most $10 for 20ft. I hate monster cable for their BS about digital cables.

I had purchsed a JVC DVD player around Chritmas time, and the ting broke within a month and then I wanted to wait for the new line of DVD's to come in. I am glad I waited I got it for 159 at mobshop about a month ago, and for that price you can't go wrong. Good video and good sound. Not anything spectacular but I also purchased it for 159. If you are looking for a high quality reasonably priced DVD player I would definely recommend it.

A earlier review wanted insight to some loading problems it's the optical reader about $65.00 to fix plus labor. you need the extended warranty to make out on repairs for a unit that seel for under $179.00 I had a try problem and an optical reader go out ( loading error ) GLAD I had a warranty to cover it. It has been working fine for six months after or was replaced.

Strength:

cheap. does what it's supposed to. easy to use and set up.

Weakness:

the video portion of the program started to fade after a year. Still plays CDs well enough, but I've bought an SD 1700 as a replacement.

Thought I needed a new glasses prescription
