dts playback
Weakness:
dropoff of audio and video (a MAJOR annoyance). My Toshiba SD-2008 works great (good audio, video, and dts playback) except that it is the first player I have encountered that does NOT play cd-r's (an essential feature to me) and drops off the audio and video at the end of chapters. If you can overlook these major faults, then this may be the player for you. Personally, I think it is a piece of junk. Similar Products Used: The newer Toshiba players are much better. |

Strength:
Sharp picture and excellent sound.
Weakness:
None Very please with this entry level Toshiba player. I've noticed that the new models even the higher end 3109 have the same video and audio resolution, so the newer players are all about side features. The picture and sound are the same as this player. This model is much better than the SD2006 I started with which was a first generation. (Which was nice in its day.) Sharper picture and more robust sound. Similar Products Used: SD2006 |

SOILD DVD PLAYER, IT PLAYES DTS MOVIES
Weakness:
REMOTE I have had this DVD player over 2 years. I just recently picked up a Denon AVR-3300 that DTS decoding. Last night I just wanted to see what would happen. Even though the unit say nothing about DTS on it or in the manual. It played it!!! I was shocked. I just purchased another dvd player that has DTS decoding on it just for this reason. I wished I had tried this out first. Oh well. Only thing that has gone bad is the remote. One day it quit working after about 19 months. Still a great deck. No CD-R play back Similar Products Used: PIONEER |

Strength:
Price, neat zoom feature
Weakness:
Big remote control, slow to respond to functions I bought this dvd player in November of 1998. Almost from the very beginning the player had audio dropouts during playback of movies. From reading other reviews I see now that this is apparently a common problem. Now the dvd player drawer will not open and the player is out of warranty by less than 3 months. An estimate to fix the player is minimum $100 without the parts. Although it seems that this product has gotten mostly good reviews I must have bought the one lemon in the bunch, so to speak. Unfortunately I should have returned the player because of the audio dropouts, but I considered this a somewhat minor problem. I see now that this was probably a good indicator of the player's overall quality. Live and learn. Similar Products Used: None |

Strength:
Great player at a great price.
Weakness:
Noted pause with dual layering. This is my first DVD player. I only paid $120 new for the unit - probably because the next generation on players came out (I bought in May 2000). I love almost everything about the DVD format. The sharpness of the image, the digital 5.1 playback, the special features, etc. My player was made in 1999, so I have not experienced the audio dropoffs listed earlier. Similar Products Used: None |

I consider myself a critical viewer and listener. I found the video quality of this unit very respectable. The price is right and it will satisfy most DVD enthusiasts. The Audio was very good (only coaxial is offered for digital,) but most movies suffered from audio dropouts (lapses of sound) that could not be duplicated after repeated playback of the scenes. The problem almost seemed random. Toshiba has acknowledged the problem (it has been fixed on units produced after October 98) and will correct it at their expense. I found the remote control O.K. (compared to high-end remotes) but better than average when compared to other DVD players in this price range. If you have the extra money, go with a player that supports more formats (no CD-R or CD-RW on this unit) and uses digital buffering. At this price range, it will be VERY difficult to find a better unit (if you get one produced after October 98!) My rating is based on comparisons with other manufacturers' units in the same price range. I would have given it the highest rating, but the dropout problem should have been corrected before production and Toshiba should have posted a notice on their Web site. |

This is my first DVD player so I did not know what to expect. I was very happy with the performance of this product for the first six months. Now I have been getting the dreaded audio dropouts. Unfortunately I am so hooked on my DVD's I don't want to lose the player for a week or two while it is fixed. So I am probably going to upgrade far sooner than anticipated. I love the features especially the zoom, and quality of this player but this problem is so prevalent it really should have been treated as a recall by Toshiba. Would be the perfect entry level machine if not for the audio problem. |

Strength:
Sharp bright clear picture
Weakness:
None noted Very pleased with this DVD player. Very sharp picture and very good sound. Much better than a SD2006 I has earlier, which was also good overall. Have not had the before mentioned sound drop off problem. Who knows. Maybe the manufacturers should stop changing the technology every two days and stick to what works. I purchased the Toshiba SD-2008 in January of 99 and I'm very impressed with the picture and sound quality of the unit. I haven't experienced any of the video or audio problems that have been detailed by other reviewers. Like the other two gentlemen who have given reviews it is the best machine out there in this price range. I went to best buy and purchased it for $299.99. For the best deal I would go to the onecall website. I believe you can purchase the 2108 for less than what I paid for the 2008. |

Strength:
Excellent video and audio. Nice (although large) remote.
Weakness:
Poor on-screen setup menu. Looks like a 5-year-old designed it. This has been a solid DVD player for me for a year and a half. It's played everything I've thrown at it flawlessly. The reason I'm writing this review on an old product is to provide some neat info for owners of this DVD player. Similar Products Used: Toshiba SD-2109 |
