Strength:

Component output, both coax and optical digital outputs, two sets of analog outputs.

Weakness:

Moderately slow initialization when spinning up a DVD

I've been using this since December of '99. This is a good player with lots of outputs. Not many players of its generation had both DTS and component video output. These two features have guaranteed that I will continue to use it for a good long while without needing to upgrade. I am a happy customer.

Strength:

great picture and sound

Weakness:

Toshiba's Tech. support Dept.

I've had my 2108 for about a year now. This is my second. The first was exchanged by Toshiba after a dozen or more calls to the retards that man the phones at Toshiba's Tech. Support line. I had the dropout problem also and this was happening with it connected to a Chiro C-800 preamp and Chiro C-5.1 processor. They made me pay the shipping to them. After Two tries I finally got the new unit after Fed X lost one and sent the second to the wrong address. I contacted the head of Toshiba's Tech. Support Dept. and was sent a check, refunding my shipping charge and my warranty was extended an extra year. Toshiba needs to restructure their hillbilly Tech Support Dept. before they destroy the whole company. As for my 2108, it works great. None of the problems I've read here except the slight freeze when changing layers. After living with laserdisc for so many years this is nothing compared to waiting for the machine to change sides on the disc. Overall I'm very happy with this player and it'll do the job until it's time to replace it with a DVD audio/video player. Will I ever buy a Toshiba again ? Probably not. I wouldn't buy a Sony either. They suck when it comes to customer service also.

Strength:

Great picture, very sharp and sounds good

Weakness:

It is a little flimsy in construction, it weighs about seven pounds
but if this is a weakness
then most people wouldn't own a car or portable cd player, or base a $20 000 car stereo system on a 2 pounds in dash

This is one of the best deals Toshiba has(had) everput out.
People complain about the audio dropouts, but unless you use a Sony receiver(and I don't recomend any Sony BUT ES stuff)
you shouldn't have a problem. It seems that the audio dropouts happen because of a time sync problem with Sony units. I think it has less to do with Toshibas firmware.

I have had the unit since it was released around September or 98 without a single problem. While they released the 2109 and 3109 6 months later, the improvement were nonexistant.
Sure you get the 3109 with HDCD decoding and dual trays but for more money. Or you could get the 2109 with the WORST remote since the wired type.

Has anyone purchased this product? How's it been working? It's the top of the 1998 roster of non-DD decoding Toshiba's, currently priced at about $669 in the Vancouver area. I'm thinking about taking the leap into HT with it and a Yamaha RX-V793 ($797). Any recommendations??

Has anyone purchased this DVD Player? How's it been working? Any problems? I'm thinking of purchasing one of these and a Yamaha RX-V793 (at $669 and $797 respectively) to enter the HT world...

This is a retraction of my earlier review. The glitching problem that I described in my first review was a result of cheap or defective cables or the video switching portion of my Onkyo reciever...I rewatched the problem dvd with no problems whatsoever. I apologize for any inconvience. The Toshiba now gets 4 stars.

I mis-quoted the price in my previous review. I paid $379 at www.onecall.com.Sorry. Still a great dvd player.

I have to say that I am not too enthusiastic about this product. It's performance is outstanding in every area except for one, picture noise (glitching, jittering whatever you wish to call it) during rapid dark to light transitions such as flashblulbs going off. I found it particularly noticible in the opening scene in The Crow....a red background with many camera flashes going off. In my opinion this scene is unwatchable with this dvd player. It's going back to the store.

It's a great DVD player. I bought mine for $346 plus tax(employee discount). It has both Dolby Digital and DTS compatible digital outputs. It's loaded with colorstream video output(component), S-video, and composite(RCA). It also has two pair of analog outputs and a toslink(optical) digital, and a coaxial digital output. Check out some of the reviews for this product in a few audio review magazines. They rated it as having the best video quality they had ever tested to date. I can't remember which one it was. Maybe Home Theater Magazine.
