Strength:

Dual Disk Tray, Overall Quality

Weakness:

Trying to figure out what's playing (is this the movie, the top menu, etc). Could be me, though... :)

This is my first DVD player. After watching my first DVD movie, I was in amazement. The quality of the sound and the picture is amazing. This could be biased due to the fact that I've never seen other movies on other players. I have a Hitach 50" Projection, and it looks amazing with the DVD Player!

I got this player through a rewards program for free. Talk about value!!

No more VHS for me...

Strength:

Quality, reliability, and consistently

Weakness:

poor remote design but who is complaining

All I can say is WOW!! What an amazing DVD player. The sound is amazingly crisp (just ask my neigbors). The picture is crystal clear. Have watched over 30 movies and each played without a hitch. Must have for those on a limited budget but want a quality product. The CD audio sounds great after adjustments were made on my receiver.

Strength:

good quality, nice remote

Weakness:

unable to play vcd's

I havent seen the horizontal line problems that others are stating. We have a complete home theatre with a new tv and the monster cable(dont know if that makes a difference).
The one thing we constantly complain about is the lack of ability to play vcd's. I wish we had researched that part a bit more. For the money it is a good buy, but there are cheaper models that have a single tray and play every type of cd and dvd. We havent really needed the dual trays yet, we typically watch one movie at a time.

Strength:

Amazing picture quality, good amount of inputs, dual disc system, easy to use remote, great price instruction maual comes in one language.

Weakness:

Always autoplays a DVD when you power the system on or take a disc out from one of the two trays.

Wow. I wasn't expecting this at all. For the past year or so, the only DVD I have been seeing is from my PC. I was too cheap to buy a real DVD player, and I thought the picture quality of the DVD on my computer was as very good, so I didn't feel the need to buy a stand alone player for my TV. Then the need for true home theater kicked in, and I decided to make the plunge, picking a player solely off the reviews on this site. I was a little bit skeptical on what it would be like, but the second I plugged it in, I was floored.

The first DVD I tried was Saving Private Ryan with Dolby Pro Logic (haven't gotten the DTS reciever yet) and could not the believe the sound and picture quality. The color and crispness is amazing and I could even stand inches away from the TV with little distortion. It took Fight Club, Braveheart, and The Matrix without breaking a sweat, putting out fantastic image quality and sound. And for a mere 250 dollars, I could not be a happier person. Now I can't wait to get the 5.1 surround system I'm ordering. If you're looking for a DVD player, buy this now. You will be a very happy person.

Strength:

Features and overall quality for the price. Dual disc is a bonus.

Weakness:

Remote layout is not ideal, but usable.

This was the third (and for now the last) in my search for a DVD player for home. I had been using the creative labs DVD Encore in my PC with the svideo and coaxial dolby digital outputs from the decoder card hooked to my tv and receiver. This setup had good video and audio quality but it was rather inconvenient to use. So, I tried the Sony first. I loved the feature set on it, but I couldn't justify the price with all the little quirks and sound issues that it had. Then I tried the Pioneer. I had all kinds of audio problems and a few video problems.

I have had the Toshiba for 3 months now, and so far no problems, even with the ton of rental DVDs that I've thrown at it.

The sound and overall video quality are at par with the Sony and Pioneer, and it comes without the reliablility problems.

My only complaint is that there is some noticable video artifacts (blockiness) in darker shaded areas. This is most noticable with movies like Aliens and the Matrix etc... where the sets are mostly dark metallic surfaces. I have tried tweaking picture settings on my TV (32" Sony Trinitron XBR) and can't seem to clear this up. I didn't notice this problem with the Sony or Pioneer DVD players. Might this be a problem with my setup? Anyway, the picture quality in all other situations has been outstanding with the Toshiba player.

Strength:

Clear picture, superior digital sound output, ease of use

Weakness:

Remote is not backlit

For all the reviewers who slam the ease of use for the remote, read the manual and know how to use it!!! I think this remote is easy to use once you know the functions. The only thing that could really help is backlit buttons - it's hard to remember which button to push in order to pause the movie when the phone rings and all the lights are out. But all in all, this DVD player carries a big bang for the buck. It decodes DTS and Dolby Digital beautifully and delivers a picture that makes you vow never to watch VHS ever again. The casual movie watcher and the pro should find enjoyment using this machine.

Strength:
