Picture quality

This is probably the "best value purchase" in my home theatre system. It cost me $250 and I later found it for sale at $199.

Picture quality is OUTSTANDING! I am completely satisfied with this entry level DVD player. CDs sound pretty good as well, as it is equipped with HDCD. Some people have complained about the remote ergonomics...I have very little problem with it. All in all a great inexpensive DVD player.

Strength:

Price, Zoom features, improved remote, picture quality, HDCD, dual disc tray, optical and coax outputs

Weakness:

new joystick not as convenient as 4 arrows and center enter button.

Bought a second Toshiba DVD player for the downstairs game room. Connected to a Sony 35" TV using S-video. I've had the 3109 for over a year and had no problems whatsoever. The SD2200 replaces the 3109 and features an improved remote control. Separate FF, REV, and Skip buttons and the zoom button is no longer hidden beneath the flip down panel. Also the word ZOOM disappears automatically when enlarging the screen. Before you'd have to hit the SETUP button twice. Same good Toshiba build quality as before. Some minor cosmetic changes on the face of the player but basically it's the same as the 3109.

On the remote there is a joystick toggle instead of the four directional arrows and a ENTER key in the center. Now you swivel the toggle in the appropriate direction and push it down for ENTER. I think the old way worked better. I use a One For All Cinema 7 learning remote anyways to control all my hardware.

This is a top notch DVD Player especially for the $215 price I got it for on Onsale.com auction. It would get 10 stars for value if I could give it a higher rating.

Strength:

2 trays, excellent built-in DD decoding.

Weakness:

poor remote, some problems reading scratched discs.

This is a good player. My first player ever, and it has good quality image, excellent sound. I use it with a Dolby Digital Ready receiver, and the fact that it allows you to control the delay times in the center and surround channels is great (I was afraid it would not allow this). The only problem I found was that it can't read discs when they have minor scratches.

Oh, and everyone's complaints about the remote are true!

Strength:

Picture (540 Scan lines), Price, Connections...

Weakness:

Switching the video modes requires you to stop the movie.

The overall value of the Toshiba SD2200 is excellent. In a transitional time of DVD players it has pretty much all the options and capabilities you could ask for in a $ 219.00 Mid Range DVD player. I was unsure whether I should leading edge it and go with a Nuon Enhanced DVD player or play it safe with tested technology. Well, with all the various manufacturing standards and formats for DVDs, I went the safe, dependable way. I am not sure if the Nuon Technology is going to catch. I am extremely happy with its performance and options. The Autoplay on power up could have been left out but hey, at least the movie is loaded quickly. A great choice for someone who is pursuing a fully loaded, dependable, affordable, DVD solution.

Strength:

very good picture and sound from an inexpensive player. built in dolby digital decoder is ok. easy to use

Weakness:

have to go into the sound menu everytime you switch from dvd to cd. out of the box, had to take to factory for firmware update

i had an older toshiba sd-2109 and was happy with that player but i needed a built in dolby digital processor for my nakamichi av-1s. very satisfied with this machine-very good picture and sound quality of this modest priced player. built in dolby digital chip certainly not as good as the high end chips found in top flight av receivers, but dd sound for movies is fairly good. light weight so you think it might be "cheap" or unreliable, but i have had no problems so far(knock wood) my old sd-2109 worked very well with no problems so i'm used to the toshiba quality. this player does everything very well. my old player is at my brother in-laws house.

Strength:

Output options are king. S-video, Dolby digital built in, progressive scan , 2 speaker audio. Can't beat all the options. This DVD player is great for the novice to the videophile. The dual tray is the best idea since Dolby 5.1!
When I got this dvd a few years ago I wasn't sure what I would use the 2nd tray fro. ALAS , my 4 year old!!! He can turn on Tarzan or Toy Story or whatever is loaded in the 2nd tray and NEVER TOUCHES MY EQUIPMENT. Just gotta wipe off the remote every week to remove the pb&j. The Dolby digital decoder is tops. The sound is incredible. I'm running Infinity Studio Monitor 12" , JBL center (awesome) and Bose 201 in the rear. (301's had too much bass for the rear) and a Yamaha powered subwoofer for the boom. I couldn't be happier with performance of the zoom and multi-angle features. Have not used the HDCD so no opinion yet on that. Sounds like DVD-audio is taking over anyways.

Weakness:

Remote control is not backlit and the toggle/joystick for the menu navigation does not alwats register with the unit. You have to move the joystick 2 sometimes 3 times for the unit the recognize your request. (new batteries does not solve this problem)

Overall the only reason I would buy a new dvd player is if this one just plain exploded and died.
I give it an A+ !

Outdated product!! See Review

DVD players are a maturing product that have NOT been fully developed yet. This player is a good example of one that will not play the latest DVD's(Per Toshiba service: a chip must be replaced)My advice to those first time DVD buyers is-DVD players tend to be finicky products so-
1-Buy a newer model from a manufacturer who has a 12 month warranty(Samsung and Sony)or from a reliable Manufacturer(Panasonic)I love auctions but stay AWAY from auctions on this product!!!(LEMON?)
2-Use with a television with at least an S-video input(Better is Component video inputs, or don't switch from a VCR!)
3-Use high quality connecting cable(Monster, AR or similar)
4-BUY a DVD laser and DVD cleaning kit
5-If you want a Home theatre experience A quality 6 speaker receiver with 6 quality speaker(Including a Powered subwoofer) is VERY IMPORTANT!
6-IT SEEMS TO ME THAT AT THIS STAGE OF DEVELOPMENT a little Pixelating(The breaking up of the picture into little squares) is normal in certain demanding movies(I could be wrong)
7-It also seems to me that the DVD industry is where the PC computer industry was a few years ago with the hardware trying to keep up with ever more demanding software(DVD's).
8-Buy the DVD player from a vendor that has a liberal retutn policy. Play a selection of DVD's before the return period expires.
PS-It has cost me a lot of time, effort, grief and money to give you this advice
Best of Luck

Strength:

5.1 Dolby Decoder. Many outputs. Many bells and whistles

Weakness:

Software needed updating. Great difficulty with multilayer or dirty, scratched DVD's.

I do not recommend Etronics as a vendor
They sold me an old unit that cost $20 to put in a new updated chip(Under warranty)to play newer DVD's. Freezes and skips on many DVD's. I am returning this unit(At a $50 loss). Confusing instructions.
