Strength:

good sound with music cd's
good video with DVD's

Weakness:

there's a fair amount of transport noise- when there is a quiet section I can hear it clicking as it spins.

I am pretty happy with the player with the only exception so far being how noisy it is as it spins. The overall build quality seems ok. It's sounds fine as my main music cd player. I love the picture quality of DVD's on it.

Please e-mail me if your player is basically noise free as it plays. I may need to get mine repaired within the 90 day time limit.

Overall I would suggest this DVD player.

thank you.

Strength:

Picture (except where I will note later) features, build quality

Weakness:

color banding (horizontal lines of color bleeding across screen) during certain scenes of movies when using composit video outputs (always same exact spots in scenes).

I am shocked at all the positive reviews on this product seen here. Forget about all other features, it the picture has a problem nothing else matters. If it were not for this issue with the picture, the rest of the picture quality is fantastic. Again this is only an issue when using composit video outputs, but the catch 22 is that it is this connection that gives you the best picture quality overall.
I thought that maybe just this unit had a problem, so I got another one from a diferent source to test - same exact problem. So I tried the SD-2050 (same unit with less outputs and no internal Digital Dolby) Yep same thing. I have tried other brands just to make sure it was not in my cables ($100 monster composit cables by the by)IE; JVC XV-M567GD, and it works perfectly with no banding what so ever. This seems like an terrible design flaw in the Toshiba line and I am very dissapointed with these units - I can't be the only one who sees this. But for those who do not see it (bad eyesight or whatever)if you want to buy my SD-2200 let me know, it goes out to E-bay today!! ( I still rate this a great buy for those who will not be using composit output)

Strength:

Dual tray, HDCD

Weakness:

Pixelation occationally, does not play cd-r

Picture quality is excellent. Prices have really fallen on this unit but it really delivers. I wish it would play CD-r burned disc's but i also checked the manual and it said it did not on my unit. Perhaps that one individual has newer software installed on his. It will occationally not feed the audio for about a minute then pops on. I take the signal out both digitally and also use the two audio out plugs and use it for a cd player. I never have to go in and switch it to play cd's except on the receiver to give me the signal direct. For the money you can't do better.

Strength:

Picture quality is super. And when hooked up to my Dolby Pro-Logic Stereo Receive, having the built in Digital Decoder the sound is great too.

Weakness:

The remote control is very poor design and to bulky. Having a smaller backlit remote would have been a great option. Sound quality on some DVD's is very poor but I think that its the output of the DVD that is the problen and not the player itself.

First DVD player and I shopped around alot. The SD2200 clearly came out on top after all my comparison shopping. I even got rid of my 5 disc changer and use this now to play all my music cd's. As for playing cd-r's. I have been able to get it to play some and not others. But the ones it will read play great.

Strength:

Sharp picture quality, amazing sound on DVD & CD, twin-tray design, Dolby digital decoder built-in, zoom!

Weakness:

not-so-smooth forward/reverse scanning

After my A110 recently died on me, I was in the market for a new player. I had a chance to audition quite a few brands, namely the Pioneer DV-333, NAD T550, Toshiba SD-1600. Just for a quick reference, here's how they turned out:
The Pioneer wasn't very sharp, and the sound was murky.
The NAD even had trouble playing several discs at the store (pixellation, skipping, lockup).
The SD-1600 I took home to try it out (as it was a little cheaper than the 2200). The sound was very muddy and did not strike the right chord with me. I returned it to Future Shop the next day (the 30 day return policy SHOULD be exercised) and went back to Audio 5.1 to look at a better model. Right away the owner of the store suggested the 2200, as it has a good track record for quality (his 2200 has sat on display for 9 months playing 12 hours a day, 7 days a week).
I brought it home and instantly noticed the improvement in sound and the features it had over the cheaper model were astounding.
The DD decoder is excellent, however it lacks some of the customization my Yamaha RX-V496 is capable of. I decided to stick with my receiver's decoder, and tried out a few movies with both. I noticed no audible difference, but the built-in decoding effects in the Yamaha are to be reckoned with.
The twin-tray design of the player works flawlessly, and I hear *NO* noise from the player when dvd's/cd's are playing, unlike the DV-333 and SD-1600. The trays switch perfectly.
Some people are complaining about the remote, but I found it to be very clean and organized. A backlit remote would have been nice, but I cannot complain for such a reasonable price. Trust me, the SD-1600's remote is far worse.
The thumb-joystick is excellent and I have no problems navigating menus.
So far, my only complaint is that T2 seems to cut out audio every 20-25 minutes in DTS sometimes for 1/2 a second. I have heard about production problems with it however, and I generally blame on the disc on it. Out of 35 discs, not a single one has problems on my player with the exception of T2.
I am very picky about my audio equipment, and I like getting the most value for my dollar. I cannot find a reason why not to buy this player, considering the rather poor crop of players currently available.

Just FYI.. if any Edmontonians are reading this, please drop by "Audio 5.1" on the south side, and skip that trip to Future Shop and A&B Sound. The prices are far more reasonable, and the service is unbeatable. They carry speakers and equipment which far exceed the value and quality of anything carried by mass-market stores. You won't be disappointed.

Strength:

Quality Price ratio. You get a lot of bang for the buck.

Weakness:

so-so remote, not DTS recorder and no progressive scan. At this price point that ain't bad!

Well I wanted to get the SD-6200 but my wife was not a fan of the price. After a little research I decided I would wait to spend the big bucks on a true HD-DVD player seeing that my next purchase will be a HDTV. This has everything I need in the mean time and more. I bought this at Mercata and with my first time buyer 20% discount paid only $200.00 delivered. I highly recommend this to anyone just getting into DVD.

Strength:

Good reviews, good reviews, and good reviews

Weakness:

No memory

I purchased the Toshiba 2200 and was planning to keep it until I realized it had a major flaw as far as I was concerned. Once you power it off and turn it back on, it doesn't remember where it left off when you were last watching the movie. As bad as my Panasonics have been, at least they kept track of this critical information. And because the Toshiba unit starts from the beginning of the disc every time you turn it on, depending on the disc, you have to sit through what seems like an eternity of FBI warnings! I returned the 2200 and am still looking for the perfect DVD player. One that remembers its place, where you can create book marks, fast forward with audio clipping, and zoom in to your heart's content. Does this unit exist yet?

Strength:

5.1 decoder, component video hookups and Price!!

Weakness:

None

I bought this from Buy.com for only $219.00 and free shipping when i used the first time buyer $30.00 coupon.
I read many reviews and visually compared many DVD players
at the local retailers. I decided that this was the best
DVD player for the price.

Anybody would be a fool to pay more for a DVD player.
This thing has it all, and the video and sound are incredible. (better sound than the movies, YEAH!)

It plays VCDs, CDs and DVDs flawlessly.

Highly recommend!! I'm one happy camper :-)
