Second Update and last:
Started having the Component Video problem again. Swapped out with another unit, same problem. Blue and Red lines showing up in DVD playback, very annoying. Sam's refunded money and I purchased a Sony DVP-S360. Sony unit is extremely better if using the Component Video Output. The possible problem may be in the ColorStream Technology used by Toshiba.

Weakness:

Picture quality fades in and out

Bought the 2200 because of the rave reviews from the site. But I am having video problems with varing lines in the playback. When the lines aren't there the image is awesome, VERY bad when lines show up in the playback. I have tried several new and rented DVD's with the same problem with each one. These DVD's play great on my Toshbia DVD/ROM in computer. Oh well, taking back to Sam's on 04/07/01 to swap with another one. If problem shows up in the next one, I move on to a Sony. This video problem showed up on two different TV's also. As for the audio, it couldn't be any better. The remote seems to have problem communicating to the player sometimes. On to the next one. I will update this post when setup and going.

UPDATE POST:
Not a bad DVD player but found a faulty component cable was causing the problem. Now with this corrected the picture thru my 32" Sony Wega is excellent, better than going to the Theater.

Strength:

Virtually no stutter during the layer change. Super quiet while playing, even during the quiet scenes.

Weakness:

Sure, it has a 'dimmer' option on the remote, but it doesn't dim the 2 plutonium powered LED's that indicate the power is on and the CD that is playing! A little black electrical tape took care of that problem. "Auto-play" feature is sometimes unwanted.

I read tons of reviews on all makes/models of DVD players. I didn't want a progressive scan one since my TV isn't compatible. This has the most bang for the buck. The manual says it won't play CDR's, but mine plays them fine. The joystick gizmo on the remote isn't a big issue.

Strength:

Almost all possible audio-video outs, built-in Dolby? Digital decoder, excellent audio and video quality

Toshiba's SD-2200 DVD player is a step up from the SD-1200 and a replacement for the SD3109. It has dual-disc capacity, includes a built-in Dolby® Digital decoder, and plays High Definition Compatible Discs (HDCD).

As usual with Toshiba DVD players, this DVD player performs great when it comes to the picture quality and produces excellent sound.

The player has excellent edge definition and detail, as well as a excellent black level. The onscreen bit-rate meter, which allows you to monitor the bit-rate allocation for a current scene is a nice (but useless) feature.

The sound is also excellent when playing both DVD-video and CD-Audio recordings. Honestly I don’t find much difference between different models of DVD players when playing CD-Audio discs, all of them are excellent. This player, though, plays HDCD-encoded discs, which other, less sophisticated models, do not do.

The presence of the built-in Dolby® Digital decoder means that the unit has 5.1-channel audio jacks, in addition to the optical and coaxial digital-audio outputs, composite-, component-, and S-video outputs.

The disc tray loads one disc at a time. The tray looks somewhat flimsy and the mechanism also makes a humming noise for several seconds as it “processes” the disc.

On the right from the disc tray a pair of open/close buttons is located. These buttons are labeled “1” and “2”, each one operates its own disc. The number of discs loaded and their current mode (i.e. play, standby…) are indicated by a pair of LEDs, which are not very informative from the distance.

The display on the front panel is quite large and the player can display phrases like "INSERT DISC", etc.

The front panel also has play, pause, stop, skip, and a disc select buttons. As usual with majority of DVD players I’ve seen, there is no menu access buttons on the front panel, so in case the remote is lost or gets broken, there is no way to access menus. Additionally there is no headphone jack, which a lot of other DVD players have.

The player comes with a joystick-style remote control that restricts your ability to easily access menus and perform setup functions. The remote doesn’t have separate open/close buttons for the each disc.

The remote control's "joystick" is designed to replace the standard up/down and left/right arrow buttons but in my opinion comes up short – it is too sensitive and “jumpy”. The buttons are a bit too small.

Additionally, I think the player looks too "edgy" and a little bit flimsy

Strength:

love the zoom, picture and sound are very nice, connection options

Weakness:

pauses during play sometimes (might be the DVD's fault rather than player)

I'm very happy with this DVD player. My favorite feature is the zoom - which allows you to make it from widescreen to anmorphic widescreen to full-screen - and I love that.

I haven't made much use of the two-trays, and I don't use it for CD's - so I can't really comment on that.

I use the sony commander (RM-AV2100) universal remote (which is backlit - and I LOVE), so I don't have anything to say on the remote on this unit.

I'm very pleased and I am yet to see anything better.

Strength:

Clear picture, great sound, Dual disc feature is nice for watching back to back movies. The sound clarity is very good for a DVD player. have had no problems to this point with this product.

Weakness:

none so far

GREAT MACHINE LOOKS AND PERFORMS WELL. SOUND AND VIDEO QUALITY IS FANTASTIC. TURNED MY LIVING ROOM INTO A THEATER. DIGITAL, DTS, AND HDCD ALL SOUND GREAT THROUGH MY DENON RECEIVER. I COMPARED THE TOSHIBA WITH THE RCA AND THE SONY THAT I WAS ABLE TO BUY AND REPLACE. ALL WERE VERY SIMILIAR. THE TOSHIBA SOUNDED BETTER THAN THE RCA AND HAD A BETTER PICTURE THAN THE SONY. PLUS THE TOSHIBA HAD THE DUAL DISC FEATURE. HAVE HAD NO PROBLEMS AFTER 20 MOVIES AND 15 CDS BEING PLAYED ON IT. I FEEL IT IS A GREAT PRODUCT.

Strength:

Very clear image, easy to use, great sound

Weakness:

picky on dvd

After that I decide to buy a player , I went on your site and looked at quite a bit of players before I decided to buy this one. I am very pleased with it except for one defect that I was surprised to find. I did rent quite a few dvd and most of them played fine and great. Some of them did gave me locked up in the middle of the movie but that was because there was some were dirty and played good after I cleaned them. BUT when I went to rent "ART OF WAR" the player did not want to load it. I went to exchange the DVD 3 times from diffenrent renting places all of them did the same thing. I did noticed that this DVD has a yellowish write side and I tried to find a different dvd with a yellowish or golden written side and found one that I also tried and same thing happens . The player loads it and then says disk error check disk. This happens to all yellowish or golden written side . So this is why I am writting this review and quote it because of this flaw.

Strength:

Picture, Features, Quality: They're all great!!

Weakness:

The joystick on the remote is somewhat difficult to control, but it's not that bad.

Wow, I wasn't expecting this. The picture is unbelieveable, so sharp and clear. The color is well balenced. It's way better than the movie theater. I really like the ability to change camera angle. I'm not going to comment on the audio because I'm listening to the TV speakers: I don't have any equipment yet. Overall this is great product and I highly recommend it.

Strength:

Dual tray, zoom feature, 540 lines horizontal resolution, HDCD

Weakness:

Doesn't play most CDR's, joystick on the remote

After my puchase of the Sony 53HS10 HDTV, I was in the market for a dvd player. I settled this unit mainly because of the postive reviews here and the dual tray feature.

The picture is so clear and crisp with playing DVD's. The The sound is also excellent with both DVD's and audio CD's. I have played over 20+ DVD's and 10+ VCD's without any problems.

Only gripe I have about the player is it doesn't play most CDR's. I tried it with different brands (Imation, Verbatim, HP, Gereric Compusa...)The only brand of CDR it will play is the generic compusa CDR's (go figure).

I had a friend that bought over his Toshiba SD6200 (Progressive Scan)and we couldn't really see any differences between the two players.

Overall, I would recommend this player. I would give 5 stars if it played most brand of cdr's.
