Strength:

little or no transport noise during quiet segments of the moive, remote somewhat improved upon, larger led display, polished rca contacts for improved signal, no heat build-up inside unit unlike other brands *cough* SONY *cough* disc is barely lukewarm to the touch when you remove it after a 2 hour movie.

Weakness:

THE DAMN EXTERIOR CASE STARTED LIFE AS THE 2109, THEN SUPERCEDED TO THE 1200, THEY ARE STILL USING THE SAME BORING DESIGN THAT IS NOW 3 YEARS OLD FOR THE CURRENT 2300.
I UNDERSTAND THE OLD ADAGE "IF ITS NOT BROKE DONT FIX IT"
HOWEVER CHANGE IS GOOD AND CONSTANT WAKE UP TOSHIBA!!!

YES IT DOES HAVE A SLIGHT PAUSE BETWEEN LAYER CHANGES, AND YES IT DOES TAKE A WHILE TO PRELOAD THE "MENUS" AND WHAT NOT... BFD!!! I THINK THATS A FAIR TRADEOFF FOR THE BEST PICTURE AND SOUND IN A DVD PLAYER OF THIS PRICE RANGE.
NO NOISE IN THE TRANSPORT LIKE THE "SONYS" AND THERE SO CALLED HIGH STEPPING MOTOR WHICH IS NOTORIOUS FOR BEING AUDIABLE!! GO TO SEARS AND AND HAVE A SALESMAN DEMONSTRATE ONE.. TAH-HA.. NOW, IM USING THE MV-1000 MONSTER COMPONENT CABLES AND YOU CANT ASK FOR A BETTER PICTURE, IF YOU CAN AFFORD THEM GO FOR IT!!!! TV USED: JVC AV-32D201 READ THE REVIEW ON THAT ONE!! I HAVE NOT EXPERIANCED THE INFAMOUS ARTIFACTS ASSOCIATED WITH THIS MODEL, THAT MAY BE DUE TO THE FACT THAT MY SERIAL # WAS NOT ON THE UPDATE LIST AT THE TOSHIBA SIGHT........ TO ALL THE CRYBABIES THAT ARE MOANING AND GROANING ABOUT THERE UNITS ACTING UP GO THERE AND GET THE SOFTWARE UPDATE BEFORE POSTING NEGATIVE FEEDBACK ABOUT THIS MODEL. MY PLAYER HAS NOT GLITCHED AT ALL AND HAS ACCEPTED MOVIE I THREW AT IT. YES IT PLAYS MISSION TO MARS WHAT A BOMB! MATRIX ALL DAY LONG!! AS FOR THE NUON FEATURE IT IS JUST MARKETING HYPE THAT WILL GO THE WAY OF DIVIX! I HAVE NO PLANS TO BUY A NUON GAME BUT THIS PLAYER WILL TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE NEW NUON DVD MENUS THAT ARE ON THE HORIZON. IF YOU CHOOSE TO BUT THIS PLAYER FROM BEST BUYS OR WHEVER..JUST MAKE SURE ITS NOT OLD STOCK!! TO BE ON THE SAFE SIDE.

Weakness:

unacceptable performance within first 20 minutes

Before purchasing, I went to Toshiba's website, and printed the "bad" serial numbers, in order to avoid purchasing a lemon. I verified that this unit was not one of those. Hooked it up via composit audio and video only, in order to test it before I tore my av rack apart. Movie tested: Toy Story 2- this is not a "rigorous" movie to test it with, it was just handy. Within the first 20 minutes of viewing, the color actually dropped in and out randomly!! It would fluctuate between black/white & color intermitantly. I have been around the av block a few times, and find this performance unacceptable. I was willing to Toshiba a chance, especially armed with the serial number information. I will return it first thing in the morning. Even if you want to imply that this problem would not occur with an S video connection, I do not want to go through the hassel of connecting it to find out. I feel that even with the "lowly" composit set up, it should function properly. So, I have crossed Toshiba permanently off my dvd player list. I suppose I should have heeded the warnings here, but I felt that avoiding the "problem" units would be sufficient. Buy at your own risk, as I did, and make sure you can return it, if need be.
Good Luck

Strength:

Easy to setup and use. Great Picture and features. It has every possible video and audio feature under the sun that I was looking for which the other brands didn't have, including sony and pioneer.

Weakness:

At first the only weakness was the 30+ second power on delay. Now pixelation occurrs at least once during every movie.

After a month of research I decided to purchase the Toshiba 2300 (A month researching and I never stumbled this web site until now!). Originally I was about to purchase the Toshiba 4205 for approx. $380.00 until I found that the 2300 had all the features the 4205 had (except video filtering and multidisc caddy)and was $100 cheaper. The 2300 even had 16x zoom instead of the normal 4x zoom.

Well I was very happy with it for the first week. Everyone in the household loved it. Sharp picture, great sound and except for the remote's 'Navi' and 'Menu' keys that get everyone mixed confused, I thought I may a great buy. I even got the salesperson at Good Guy's to knock $30 off the $299 price.

Now during the second week we purchased 5 new dvd movies and have noticed this so called 'pixelation' briefly once during each movie. It is not repeatable at the same spot, but I can almost gurantee that it will happen somewhere during each movie watched. Currently it is not a big deal for us. It usually is in one small area and then disappears quickly.

Now after finding this site and the reading the reviews, I'm wondering what to do. I have not experienced the drastic problems listed in the revies. I have not seen the pause/delay switching from one layer to another. And so far thepixelation averages about once per movie and only very briefly. I've not had a DVD freeze on me either. Of course I don't use my DVD player to play rented DVD's or music CD's either. What I do know is that after reading all the reviews I'm thinking about returning the 2300 and getting the Toshiba 4205 for $130 more if anymore problems occur or the current one get real annoying.

Strength:

Easy to set-up. Good picture and sound quality. Remote is not overly complicated.

Weakness:

I've had this for about two weeks and have already encountered pixelation with the first movie played (new copy of The Matrix) and it was unable to load a couple of audio cd's that my ten year cd player has no problem with.

I got this as a gift and only read the reviews here after I recieved it.....needless to say I wouldn't have bought this model if I was spending my own money.

I haven't used it enough yet to totally write it off as a piece of junk, but it's not off to a good start. On the bright side, the pixelation that did occur only flashed on the screen for a brief split-second and only happended twice in the entire movie....no big deal.

Just an update. Checked out my unit to see if it needed software update. According to Toshiba web site my unit does not need update. So far, my unit works just fine. I am very happy with my unit. Have watched several movies since last review with no problems.

Strength:

PICTURE, HDCD.

Weakness:

CD SKIPPING, CLUMSY REMOTE.

First of all, mine was one of the bad serial numbers but I
loaded the "patch" available from Toshiba. Didn't seem to affect video or audio playback. Especially the random backwards skipping that I was experiencing on audio CDs.
This happened very infrequently (once every 2 to 3 CDs) but often enough to be annoying. Didn't seem to matter if the CD was old or brand new. I have 2 months left on the warranty and will probably take it somewhere to see if they can correct it. Other than that, the audio quality is superb, especially when playing back HDCDs. Yes, I can hear
a difference. The sound is more natural and less harsh.
The video playback is excellent and I haven't noticed the pixelization that other people have talked about, unless it is a rented disk that is dirty or scratched. The only other complaint I have is with the joystick on the remote, which is sometimes quite clumsy in getting it to go where you want it to go on on-screen menus, especially diagonal moves which tend to be hit-or-miss. Other than that, I really do like the player and its look and feel. If I could get this random skipping problem fixed, I would be completely satisfied.
