Strength:

Component video, dolby processor, great picture/sound

Weakness:

Remote sucks- the FF and RW are a pain

I have had this player for about a year now and have had no major problems. It does freeze for a fraction of a second about every 2 or 3 movies, but this is a common thing for all non progressive scan dvd players.

No problems with the "disk reading error". Some of the people's receivers below may have been from a bad "batch" from the factory.

I would give this a 6 star rating for value. Highly recommend!

Strength:

DTS and Dolby Digital Decoder, multiple RCA OUTS forAnalog. Component Video Out, Fiber Audio Out.

Weakness:

Not Progressive scan capable. Not enough function from front panel. Fails to discover discs every 10th one.

I chose the Toshiba SD3109 because I wanted the DTS and Dolby Decoder, and for the video quality and sound quality.
I plan to upgrade to a progressive scan player in 1 year. My wife purchased this for me on fathers day 1999. It was a great present, and I rate it a 5

Strength:

None

Weakness:

Very poor construction. Only one of the two machines ever worked. The one that worked only lasted for 2 minutes before the laser went.

In less than three months I have gone through two of these players. Basically they are poorly made pieces of crap. I am still trying to force Toshiba to give me a refund.

I reviewed this player a couple of months back. I had given it a 5 star then.

Since then I started getting Disc Errors and Freezes with a lot of Disc's that worked great previously. I sent it to the toshiba authorized center and they got a new PC board and replaced it. Once I got it back the problems started all over again. I have returned it since then.

Its a pity. I was really enjoying the sound and video on this unit.

I have to downgrade this to a 1 star on value. The overall is 2 because Toshiba customer support is great.

Strength:

Ease of use/menus & remote, HDCD, Dual Trays, Excellent Picture, Enhanced Video feature for blacker-than-black

Weakness:

Autoplay for dual trays is not an option

I'm very impressed with this unit as both a DVD Player, as well as for Audio CD's. I'm comparing the CD Audio playback in comparison with a Denon DCM-360 CD, so that's a consideration. I bought this unit in April '99 for about $340 from a local retailer. Which wasn't too bad at the time.
I have had absolutely NO PROBLEMS as others make mention of. I have a library of about 50 DVD's, and have rented well over 75.... well, none other than the "expected" layer change stall on certain DVD's. Which by the way is MUCH smoother than the 3006 I used to have handled layer changes. Also, when spinning disks - this unit is totally quiet, especially compared to the 3006 I had that was really loud.
If you can snag this unit today under $300, whether you need the built-in DD5.1 decoder or not (I didn't).... it's a great player in my opinion.

I shopped for three months looking for the right DVD player to buy. With so many new models coming out it was a hard choice. I purchased the Toshiba for the dual disc feature among others. I have watched over 25 movies with it and have had none of the problems that others seem to have. The MATRIX was flawess as well as Enemy of The State. I have it attached to a Toshiba 36 inch TV with a Sony Reciever. I have no problem recommending this product friends or family.

Strength:

picture quality

Weakness:

lack of continuous play with dual tray, scan forward/reverse on remote

I'm extremely pleased with the picture quality of the 3109, but the remote could definitely use some work. It has played my DVDs flawlessly, but I have had a couple of CDs that it couldn't read. Saving Private Ryan was outstanding on the 3109. However, I have to agree with Jason about the dual trays. You never know which disk is playing and no automatic continuation of the discs. This is especially frustrating for CDs. But for the price, I think it does a great job on DVDs and is still a good value.

Strength:

Fantastic picture and sound (compared with VCR), easy to use, easy to set up.

Weakness:

Glow in the dark buttons

Although I have had this player for a relatively short time, I couldn't be happier with it. Everything I expected of it has been delivered and much more besides.

I wrote this review after such a short amount of time because I wanted to address points made in reviews below:

1. No fast forward on the remote control (some people mentioned they meant no dedicated button). Although there is no dedicated button, the remote control is really simple to use after a couple of sentences in the manual. Pressing and holding the Next Chapter button for one second will put the player in 2x fast forward. Press again for 8x, press once more for 30x. (Same is true in reverse).

2. Dual Disk capacity. Somebody mentioned 20 seconds between disks - I timed it at about 8 seconds - still much much quicker than getting up, ejecting, replacing and closing the door, still useful. There was also confusion about which DVD would play - it plays the last DVD played before it was switched off. Finally, as for how gimmicky - probably quite a gimmick, but if you are like me and enjoy listening to a song off one CD and then changing, you get non-stop music as you can change one disk whilst playing the other.

I will make a follow up later on long term findings, but right now I am very very happy.
