Strength:

terrific 5.1 audio

Weakness:

remote takes some time to get used to

I really like this unit. It almost never has problems and plays 99% of all my DVD's without a glitch (the only one that gave me some trouble was a DVD purchased in China).

Strength:

Great picture and sound

Weakness:

Needs separate FF and skip buttons

It's my first dvd player, but I did alot of research before I purchased it. Audio cd sound better than on my old Kenwood player. $276 at Mercata with their $50 first time buyers money. Watched over a dozen movies without one problem. BTW, you can get rid of the zoom text by hitting the setup button twice.

Strength:

have never had a problem with this unit, loading takes no longer than any other player

Weakness:

none

I can't believe the last two reviewers paid so much for this unit. I would probably be concerned too if I paid $300+ for this unit. People always pay too much at Ebay.

Dual disk system

I bought it about 4 mos. ago and was throughly impressed with the quality for the price. I had no problems until about two weeks ago when tray 2 would not open. I played around opening and closing tray one with no outcome. Eventually I removed the cover and disk mechanism and was able to remove said disk. Have used it heavily for the past two weeks and have not had a further problem. Despite small problem, overall very impressed.
It works well in my new system
Sony555ES Receiver
Infinity RS 5's (fronts)
Infinity RS 3's (rear)
Infinity CC-3 (center)
Infinity BU-120 (sub)

Also looking for HI-FI and maybe S-VHS to complement system, any help would be appreciated

Can't wait for this baby! Love what I'm hearing and absolutely amazed at the quality and price compared to Sony and Pioneer! I've spent over a month looking at everything (under 500 bucks that is). Don't spend 350-400 bucks on this unit, when you can have it shipped to your front door for $285.99!!!! That's right, check it out at www.theweb-shop.com. Can't wait to get it spinning!

Great product at a reasonable price.
The two trays are really worth it, i have kids and Roger Rabbit has sat in the lower tray for a month. Nothing to compare it to, but the picture is incredible.

I actually purchased the Toshiba SD-2109. The primary difference between the 2109 and the 3109 is that the 3109 has the Dolby Digital Decoder and dual disk trays (questionable as to the value of 2 trays). I submit that you don't need a DVD player with the Dolby Digital Decoder. If you have a new receiver, chances are you already have the decoder in your receiver. If you don't have a receiver with the decoder, consider upgrading your receiver. All new receivers have Dolby Digital and DTS. This way, all devices you route through your receiver, including your DVD player, can take advantage of the decoder. Either way, a decoder is not necessary in your DVD player. Save the $150 and consider the Toshiba SD-2109 instead. My rating below is for the SD-2109.

Strength:

Excellent Picture and Great Sound; lots of features

Weakness:

None: if you get used to the skip and forward then that is really cool

Overall I found the Toshiba to be a great value. I got an open box from Best Buy with everything intact for $250 and its been a great deal so far.

Noticed slight glitches like freezing on some DVDs but if you wipe them clean and play again...no problem.

The player has lot of features for the price.

Above all highly recommended

Strength:

variety of features, especially zoom

Weakness:

remote

Love the DVD player and the zoom feature for folks like me that spent too much money buying a 4:3 TV and are waiting for HDTV prices to become blue collar. Works well and no problems with DVDs so far. Probably the best value under $400 I've seen. The HDCD feature is pretty much useless to me. I have the Paula Cole CD and can't tell any difference between it and on my CD player with digital out. I looked at the Pioneer, the Sony and the Panasonic. The Sony was the best but was also about $150 more and IMHO not worth the extra cost as long as this unit is reliable.

In an attempt to minimize my learning curve and frustration, I purchased a One for All remote which is the 7 in 1 model, controlling DVD, DSS, and 2 VCR's ($27 at the "best" electronic store). The fast forward and chapter search buttons are separated and makes it very easy. Also it gives you 4 "learning" buttons so I made one of them zoom and another disc select. Before buying you might want to check out a website that is dedicated to ..you won't believe it..universal remote controls. The Radio Shack 15-1994 gets high remarks for DVD and DSS control as well.
