    Strength:

3X ZOOM, forward and backward slo mo, 6 disc carousel, DD, DTS, HDCD out, COLORSTREAM out

    Weakness:

A bit deep, I had to modify my armoir, but really for the price... nothing.

I looked at A LOT of DVD players and I think for the money (I paid $349) there is nothing out there even close. For one thing I don't like widescreen movies when they're a 6 inch sliver across my screen, I have a 32 inch TV and that's fine for me and with toshibas' zoom feature I can resize the movie to suit me. You can also zoom in 3X on an object and move around on the screen if you want to see something. The picture quality is top notch and you can choose RCA, COAX, or COLORSTREAM. Audio cd's sound very good and I'll be using this for my CD player while I wait for the whole DVD Audio/SACD thing to clear up. Some have complained about the lack of random play feature and other things about playing CD's as if they had spent $400 dollars on a CD player instead of a GREAT DVD player that just happens to be a very decent CD player also. BTW, really nice to be able to sit down to 2 or 3 movies without having to touch the unit and then flip over to a CD as I crash out on the couch. I am upgrading my system piece by piece as funds allow and this is the one I will stick w/ for DVD. You can spend $500, $600 or even more for something as good, but WHY?

I actually purchased this unit online for $355 delivered. I am very pleased with the super audio and video from this player. I was going to purchase a Denon DCM 370 for $235, but I figured I could pay a little extra and get the same HDCD player with the DVD. Now its not a Denon HDCD player, and I don't expect it to be. I don't consider myself a genius, but I sure as hell no the features on an item before I buy it, because, UH, well I research my purchases. The idiot from Chicago that gives this item 1 star because HE was to stupid to research it, bought it, then blames Toshiba for his ignorance. I like the item quite a bit and for what I paid it can't be beat. I'm rating slightly higher because I need to make up for Tim (I'm glad the Blackhawks and the Bulls suck) from Chicago's ignorance!

As a DVD player it seems good. I do not have a lot of DVDs nor a lot of experience. But playing Twister and Matrix have not shown me any problems.

I have found the swapping of CD/DVDs easier on this machine than on the Sony CD player.

As a CD player it has been a real disappointment. I had hoped to be able to move my existing CD player into another area of the house but it appears not now. The player exhibits an audiable ticking sound when playing CDs only. Volume varies from tray position to tray position. Unit in the retailer's show room also displayed the same problem but the loudness was in different tray positions. Toshiba reports that it exists and that it is not audible at normal listening volumes, so is not a problem. A point that I dispute as I discovered it listening with my feet up relaxing to track 2 of Branford Marsalis' Royal Garden Blues at my normal distance (11 feet) and normal volume. It was quite audible during the quiet passages.

I am currently trying to convince the retailer to take back the unit, but I am not certain what I can replace it with that gives me the same value.

Size can be an issue as it is quite deep.

The two AC3 connectors have allowed me to configure one for as a CD (Dolby stereo) and the other for DVD (Dolby Digital).

Summary if you want this a DVD player only or your preferred music has not soft parts then this is a good product. If you play quiet musice them find something else.

    Strength:

    Great Picture and sound

    Weakness:

IT DOES NOT PLAY DISCS AT RANDOM. IT WILL PLAY TRACKS ON A DISC AT RANDOM BUT THROW 6 DISCS IN AND THEY WILL ONLY PLAY IN SEQUENCE, UNLESS YOU PROGRAM THE MEMORY....

So far the DVD is superb, but I bought this to throw in 6 CDs and let it randomly play through,,,,,HUGE disapointment that it wont do this. I can program the disc and tracks each time I put in a bunch of discs but why not have a random that actually plays CDs randomly?????

I will write more about the DVD later as I get to play but I wanted to warn other like me who though RAMDOM would partain to discs....

    Strength:

Six disc DVD/CD/VCD changer, component video outs, HDCD decoder, Dolby Digital decoder.

    Weakness:

Remote not backlit, front panel buttons are stiff out of the box.

I bought the unit to double as a CD player, and I am very happy with the results. I was a little worried that I wouldn't be able to swap disks while another was playing as there is no mention of this feature in the manual, but you can swap disks that way without a problem. The remote is a little tough to navigate in the dark, but I am getting used to locating frequently used buttons by memory. I haven't really evaluated the HDCD decoder yet, although as luck would have it, I do have a handful of HDCD encoded Cd's. I am pretty confident that I chose the right DVD carousel - the Panasonic looked cheap, I've had bad experiences with Sony (non ES) products, the Denon is twice as much and hard to find, and the Onkyo has a low audio S/N ratio. The Toshiba is a good bargain, too - it can be had for $380 on the web.

    Strength:

Crystal clear picture, 6 disk, lots of hookups, dts

    Weakness:

Only zooms 3x, fast forward everse is not always smooth, no bookmarks, NO SHUFFLE on cds

Dvd is the best thing that has happened to me. I watch at least 2 movies a week on this player. Over all I am very pleased with my new player. For one it has a built in decoder so if you don't have a reciever yet you can listen to 5.1 sound. Also, it has an S vidio hook up which makes an amazing difference! I was looking forward to the spatializer but it is really more of a gimmick. I'm looking forward now to trying out the HDCD but I do not own a CD recorded on a HDCD : ) The remote is easy to learn and to use, it is all common sense. My one big problem with the unit is that I had bought it partly because it is a CD player as well. And you would think that a 6 disk player would have a shuffle on it, but it dose not. It will only play your disks in order. It would take to long to write about every detail, so feel free to e-mail. Like I said above, it's a great player. Use it for great videos and to impress the sh-t out of your friends!

above average dvd playback, but audio cd is just average. I cant notice the difference between my regular CD player and this DVD in terms of music. It seems my yamaha CD player sounds a little more spacious than this toshiba I dont know why?, but I still like my regular player a little better This is a DVD player it is made for movies, picture is great and sound is terrific.
all in all, if you want to kill two birds with one stone this is the player for you audio and video.

This is my first DVD player. It was not the highest rated DVD player. But it has features that I like.I listen mostly to CDs so the HDCD, and six disk capacity is nice. I have not played a large volume of DVDs through this unit. But the ones that I have played worked fine. The unit does make a little noise when playing disks. However I can not hear the noise beyond two feet from the unit. So for me the noise issue is not a big deal at all. I purchased the unit at Costco for what seems the current going rate of $349. All in all it has been a good unit thus far. And I have high expectations for this DVD player. After all I still have my toshiba HIFI VCR that I purchased back in 1989.

It seems the only problems that anyone lists in these reviews could have been solved by spending 5 minutes at toshiba.com, which stated explicitly that the 4109 could not play cd-r's and that there was no backlit remote. Also, disks can be played in any way you choose to program them, (and since it is a DVD player and not a CD player who cares).
I paid $355 for this DVD including shipping on Bid.com and it was an absolute steal. The picture quality on my TV which has 700 lines of resolution (and an S-video connection) is incredible, and the sound quality is beyond what I could have imagined. Also, I highly recommend listening to the new Beck's new CD, Midnight Vultures, which was recorded in HDCD because in surrounrd sound it will absolutely blow your mind. My old Pioneer CD player could never do this CD justice, but this DVD brings out another layer of sound that is barely detectable on a normal CD player. This DVD player is incredible at $355, and would be a steal even at the BestBuy price of $500.

I’ve had the Toshiba 4109X player for 3 months now, and I really pleased with it. The unit was purchased as a multi-functional replacement for an aging Harman Kardon carousel CD player. Audio interfacing to Denon electronics is with a digital toslink cable while TV interfacing is with a S-video cable. These give excellent sound and a super picture, respectively. Critical listening to the Dixie Chick’s Fly album (which is done in HDCD) will attest to the high-quality audio produced by this unit. I would like to try the component video outputs but my TV lacks those inputs.

I’ve had no problem whatsoever with my unit. It plays DVDs and CDs in any of the 6 slots, whether they are scratched or not, and does so in near total silence. The inability to shuffle disks randomly or to play CD-Rs should not be considered as major disadvantages unless those qualities are critical to the buyer. However, the problems reported by others here with this unit makes it obvious that Toshiba must do a better job in terms of quality control. Once the bugs are worked out, the 4109X will be an excellent multi-disk player at its price point.
