Strength:

Great features (when they work).

Weakness:

Quirky behaviour, not playing all discs, freezes up.

I've had some frustrations. I first bought my unit from liquidprice.com. It was supposed to be a NEW unit and I got a refurbished unit that didn't even have an original box (the vendor was "At Your Service" out of TX and it was really them deceiving me not liquidprice.com but liquid has to gain more control). The unit didn't work at all. They couldn't find me a new unit so I just returned it for a credit then bought locally (for $100 more than the liquidprice.com price) at Good Guys.

Now I have the following problems...

As I mentioned, I just bought a Toshiba 5-disc SD4205 from Good Guys in Huntington Beach, CA about 3 weeks ago. [ for reference, I also and have a Dennon 3300 A/V receiver and Sony SA-VE 505 speaker system]

Q#1: I can play most DVD's alright but have had two inexplainable problems. First, my Scream DVD cannot be read at all by my player. It is dual-layered, and may be the only dual-layered disc I have to far (not quite sure). Is it possible that this player does not read dual-layered? Is this common? Could it be the DVD? This is the second of the same DVD I tried and still not working. If this player doesn't play this common format, then it will be useless and I will want to exchange it.

#2: I have the DVD "A Clockwork Orange". While it is an older film, it says it is Dolby ProLogic and surround. The receiver first says Dolby Prologic then switches to Dolby Digital /DTS and I only get ONE CHANNEL, the center one, when playing this DVD. As the soundtrack/music is great on this DVD, I really want to hear it in surround. Any suggestions? Is it my player, my receiver or the DVD??

Q#3: On “A Clockwork Orange” and “Spinal Tap”, the image freezes and “pixelates” a few times toward the end of the DVD, after freezing it moves forward again then freezes again and finally freezes for good and I have to turn off the DVD player or I cannot even change discs or get anything else on the DVD player to function. Please advise possible causes and solutions.

Q#4: I cannot get the carousel to stop where I want it to stop when trying to remove a particular DVD when the drawer is open. I practically have to grab it as it goes by. The up and down arrows move it 3 discs up or down rather than one at a time and using the numbered buttons doesn't work either. Is there a trick to this?

I am very disappointed so far with the Toshiba 4205.

Please help by posting your comments or send to my email directly at gwarends1@hotmail.com

I'm not sure if this is how the unit always performs or I have to get a THIRD unit! Help!

Strength:

5-disc player, plays CD-R's, quality audio & video

Weakness:

remote, auto-play

I've had the unit for several weeks and it has played all DVDs, CDs, and CD-Rs without a hitch. No complaints about picture or audio quality. Many nice video functions and user friendly menus.

The auto-play function is a little annoying. It starts playing whenever you put in a disc. Even if you simply open the tray to remove a disc, when you close the tray, it looks for the next disc and starts playing it.

The remote is a bit clumsy and sometimes buttons have to pressed more than once to get a response from the unit. My universal remote seems to get a more consistent response. There is an annoying beep from the unit everytime you press a button on the remote. Fortunately the beep can be turned off. I will say that the multi-function (jog control) button on the side of the remote is pretty cool and almost makes for all other remote deficiencies.

If your looking for a multi-disc player that plays CD-R', this is probably the DVD player for you.

Strength:

Great Picture. All the features I need. Ease of audio track selection.

Weakness:

Starts up the movie as soon as you power on or shut the drawer. Remote somewhat slow to react at times

The picture quality is very sharp. In contrast to Sony, Toshiba goes for very sharp images instead of soft ones. This is great for faces and scenery but when you get horizontal lines such as buildings, bridges etc., there is quite a bit of artifacting (combing). It's a trade off. I like the sharp picture. (I'm using S-Video connections)

The audio? I'm simply connected up via optical cable. I don't use any of the internal decoders. It works perfectly and is as good as my receiver decodes it to be.

I've been using it for 5 months and it has worked flawlessly . It has never skipped, mis-read a disk or otherwise screwed up. Maybe I have the updated prom?

A good feature on the remote is the audio button. It allows you (depending on the movie) to select the audio track (Pro Logic, DD5.1 or DTS) when the movie is playing. This is handy because the player doesn't always pick the right track when you start up and it keeps you from having to go through all of the set up menus.

In my opinion the drawbacks are as follows: The joystick on the remote takes an annoyingly long time to react to input. When sequencing through a DVD menu, I have to wait a few seconds after the menu becomes visible before I can surf around. Also, it's 8 way directional so if you don't go exactly down you might be hitting the "down right" position and nothing happens. It can be annoying. The button on the side of the remote can be used for fast forward, fast reverse, pause and play. It's both great and a pain. I love it for usage in the dark. You know where it is and you can use it without looking at the remote. But you can also accidently activate it while simply picking up the remote. This happens a lot interrupting the viewing experience while you rewind what you just missed.

All in all I'm very happy with this and will stick with it until I get the digital TV and need a progressive player. Then I'll use it as my CD changer connected via optical to bypass what others have called average CD stereo audio performance. I've not tried the analog connection for stereo sound.

Strength:

Ease of setup; price

Weakness:

random disc detection

I bought this unit off the shelf as an opened-box return.

As far as the picture and sound, this unit has no flaws that I can see. I am very pleased with the overall quality of those two things but unfortunately, it hasn't bee all that reliable.

As with Jay, I have had random problems with DVD recognition. It will often try reading a disc, report "no disc" and then move on to the next disc in the carousel. The problem is totally random and has happened with dozens of movies. However, I can open and close the carousel and it will almost always detect the movie the second time around.

On another note, one of the most annoying features is that it will automatically start a movie when the power is turned on or the carousel is closed after adding/subtracting discs from the unit. It drives me absolutely crazy when that happens.

I am taking the unit to a service center today and will follow up after I get it back.

Overall, I grade this unit a "3" because of the disc reading errors and automatic movie starting. The sound and picture quality warrant a higher rating if the reliability issues are solved.

Weakness:

Cant see the disc numbers on the carousel.

I bought this DVD player upon research and reviews on this site. I was not disappointed. I wasn't originally looking for a DVD with 5-disc changer but after much deliberation, I went with it, mostly to put 5 music CD's or CD-r's and set it on random. Some reviews noted a problem with the unit picking up on DVD's, but I have not had any such problems yet. I've watched 7 movies so far and everything has worked perfectly. It is hooked up to a Yamaha HTR-5240 and it looks and sounds great. The zoom feature is cool as well as the slow motion speeds available. I'm not entirely used to the joystick on the remote yet, but I am getting the hang of it.Only gripe I have is that it is very difficult for me to see the numbers in the center of the carousel to know which disc is which. I've solved this problem by placing numbered labels in the thumb groove beside the CD slots. As long as they don't come off, I should be in business. Other than that, great unit so far, cant complain.

None so far

Just had purchase a Sony 27" Wega. Needed a good DVD to go with it. A friend of mine highly recommended this DVD for all its outstanding qualities. Went to a local electronic shop to check them out, and I like what I saw. Great picture output, great sound, 5 disc carrousel, and can read
CDR. I got the best price from OneCall.com, which by the way offer and give excellent services, I got my unit via Federal Express in two days. Plug this baby to my new 27" Sony Wega and I have been mesmerized ever since, in heaven.:)
