Strength:

OK..progressive output, outstanding when connected with a compatible HDTV ready set (Sony 61HS10 in my case).

Weakness:

@!#$@$%$%^ thing locked up after 10 mins. Typical microchip, which they've been making for 20 years now, crapped out, won't power down

From now on...pay top dollar..because if you don't you get a peice of crap that doesn't work....

so much for my limited experience with toshiba...I'm ordering the JVC model today and getting rid of this peice of crap.

Anyone want to buy this player for $200 ...send me an e-mail

purduedoug@yahoo.com

Iytd s true you get what you pay for...I was considering getting the toshiba HDTv ready TV's, now I'm gald I got the Sony.

Strength:

price, dual tray, no DVD incompatability so far

Weakness:

poor fast forward/reverse design

I bought this unit with my Panasonic PT-56WXF95 HDTV 10 months ago. The combination is fantastic. Watching anamorphic DVDs through the progressive mode is truly a movie theater experience. I have had no compatability problems with my growing collection of 80+ DVDs. I read some of the recent negitive reviews below and I have to say what are you complaining for? You, not the product, pretty much screwed yourselves. I'm not trying to be a jerk but be reasonable. Jim, you bought a refurbished model. Doug, you got it from ebay for crying out loud. Zack, an open box? You should know better. This is a good progressive scan player for the price. It's even cheaper now than when I bought mine and I thought I was getting a great deal. There are other progressive players that are better but they cost more.

Progressive Scan is exceptional when paired w/my Sony 61" High Def television---at one point I had a a non-progressive Toshiba and this progressive scan unit hooked up at the same time---the picture difference was very noticeable!

Weakness:

none to speak of

Great unit for those w/HD compatable televisions

Strength:

The picture quality is stunning even on a regular digital monitor.

Weakness:

limited (or none) playback of material recored on CD-R & CD-RW media.

First of all. A product that listed at $1000.00 rolling of the assembly line to purchasing it for only $330.00 within months was a blessing in disguises! The first owner returned the item because he did not have the right TV set (assuming that he was not satisfied with the picture quality). With my RCA 46" inch digital set it's outstanding. Useful disc-transport and Handy front-panel menu/cursor control is nice. I was going to purchase the Sony 570D but when I saw the price on this machine, I ran home and did some research! I drove back to the store to purchase this item with no regrets. Picture is perfect. I can deal with the remote. (Just because you bought a new car doesn’t mean you can’t replace the factory radio). My first DVD movie…Gladiator. WOW! What a way to break this box in. The images seem as if they are going to peal of the screen and fall on your floor. The battle scene sounds outstanding (I have my Sony doby digital receiver set at large theater while my 2 subwoofers fire away)! This unit is awesome.

Strength:

Outstanding Picture; Beautiful Color; Dual Tray; Great Audio

Weakness:

Difficult to do Frame by Frame Analysis with Remote

After buying and using three other DVD players, I knew what I was looking for and found it all in the Toshiba 5109. This player is an unbelievable value. Of course, I have a pet peeve about players with a MSRP of $1000, that sell for much less - the high list price only allows brick and mortar shops to artificially maintain a high price, forcing us to buy from the internet. While I enjoy an internet purchase, I like to shop globally but buy locally, since I still value personal service and am willing to pay a premium for it - but not as much as an artificially MSRP priced product commands.
Enough soap - box: I use the 5109 with my Panasonic Super Flat TV, which has a special Anamorphic mode and accepts Progressive Scan, and I was simply blown away by the color, clarity, and smooth, film-like picture from the 5109. If it gets better than this, I haven't seen it in dozens of high-end demo's. The sound is almost as amazing, using a digital output into my Sony ES receiver. As to the complaints that some people have noted, I can find none of these errors after much critical viewing. Its not that I disbelieve these folks, but I think their problems must be product incompatibility rather than design flaws in the 5109. If you have their equipment set-up, don't buy from a retailer unless you can audition and return - because you owe it to yourself to audition this model.
I value products that deliver value for dollar, and the D to V ratio in this case its about as good as it gets. Sure you could spend more money, but 999 A/V nuts out of 1000 will never notice the difference, and hey, there are so many products and so little time and money to acquire them!

Strength:

Amazing picture quality, progressive scan, component video, excellent build quality, never a problem

Weakness:

remote... but that is being really petty

If you are willing to spend a little more on a DVD player, I would definetly reccommend upgrading and getting a progressive scan model from Toshiba. AMAZING picture quality though coax, s-video, and component video. You pick it, the picture is still outstanding.

The dual disc feature is especially handy, I use this model to play CD's as well, the digital out is fantastic. Origionally i had used the built in DD and DTS until i got a reciever, and it was great too.

The only picking point is a remote.. then again i have never seen one that is OUTSTANDING.

5 stars all the way!

CASE IS PLASTIC, WOULD LIKE 2 SETS OF S-VIDEO OUTPUTS

WHEN I FIRST WENT TO LOOK AT DVD PLAYERS I WAS ASTONISHED AT HOW THE PRICES HAD COME DOWN IN JUST A FEW SHORT YEARS. AS A CURRENT OWNER OF A SONY 550D LASERDISC PLAYER I WAS TO SAY THE LEAST RELUCTENT TO GIVE UP ON THIS MUCH BELOVED FOREMAT. BUT AS TIME ROLLED BY THE NUMBER OF LASERDISCS FOR SALE OR RENT IN MY LOCAL AREA DWINDLED TO ALMOST NOTHING AND I WAS FORCED TO MOVE ALONG TO THE NEXT PLANE AND BUY A DVD PLAYER.
MY FIRST STOP WAS THE SONY WEBSITE BECAUSE OVER THE YEARS MY LASERDISC HAD BEEN SUCH A GOOD MACHINE I WAS WILLING TO GO BACK TO WHOM I THOUGHT PROBOBLY MADE THE BEST SET OF DVD PLAYERS ON THE MARKET.
BUT UPON GOING TO THE STORE EXCITED WITH SPECS IN HAND TO LOOK AT THE 500 SERIES SONY I WAS UTERLY APPALED AT THE CHEAPNESS OF THIS UNIT. NO LONGER WAS THE CASING CLEAN AND STREMLINED BUT FULL OF BUMPS AND ODD ANGLES. THE CHEAP LOOK AND FEEL MADE ME DECIDE TO READ OVER THE REVIEWS ON THIS WEBSITE FOR HELP. AFTER MUCH DIGGING I CAME ACROSS THE 5109. THE FEATURES THAT I WANTED WERE ALL PRESENT (EXCEPT THE SECOND S-VIDEO OUTPUT)SO I WENT TO MY LOCAL SOUND ADVICE FOR A LOOK.
MY FIRST IMPRESSION HOWEVER WAS NOT A GOOD ONE. AGAIN I WAS LOOKING AT A PLASTIC CASE AND A SOMEWHAT BUSY FRONT PANEL. AFTER A LITTLE DEBATE I ASKED THE SALESMAN TO FIRE IT UP AND SHOW ME WHAT IT COULD DO. THAT ONE LOOK WAS ALL IT TOOK TO CONVINCE ME THAT THIS WAS BY FAR THE FINEST PLAYER IN THIS PRICERANGE (WITH A PROGRESSIVE SCAN OUTPUT TO BOOT!)
THE BACK OF THIS UNIT ALSO SURPRISED ME. THE SONY HAD A CHEAP LOOK TO THE OUTPUTS AND THEY WOBBLED WHEN SLIGHTLY DEPRESSED. NOT SO WITH THE 5109. THE OUTPUTS WERE ALL BUSINESS AND EVEN WERE GOLD PLATED TO MAKE THAT EVER SO IMPORTANT TIGHT CONNECTION TO THOSE EXPENSIVE MONSTER CABLES THAT YOU WERE GOING TO PURCHASE TO GO ALONG WITH IT.
CONVINCED THAT I HAD TO HAVE THIS UNIT I WENT IN SEARCH OF THE BEST POSSIBLE PRICE ($850.00 WAS A LITTLE TOO HIGH FOR ME). AFTER A WEEK OF SEARCHING I CAME ACROSS A WEBSITE WHERE THE 5109 SOLD AT $495.00 . BUT HERE IS WHERE THE STORY RUNS SOUR. THE COMPANY WHO SOLD IT TO ME (WHO SHALL REMAIN NAMELESS BECAUSE THEY ALREADY KNOW HOW I FEEL ABOUT THEM) DID THE WORST POSSIBLE JOB THAT ANYONE COULD DO. SAFE TO SAY THAT THIS HAS MADE ME STAY AWAY FROM THE NET FOR ALL FUTURE ELECTRONIC PURCHASES.
AFTER MANY LONG WEEKS THE PLAYER FINALLY ARRIVED AND I WAS ABLE TO HOOK IT UP TO MY 36" TOSHIBA CINEMAVIEW TV.
WOW!! WHAT AN OUTSTANDING PICTURE AND THE SOUND QUALITY JUST ABOUT BLEW ME OUT OF MY CHAIR. ALL IN ALL I THINK THIS IS ABOUT THE BEST DVD PLAYER YOU CAN BUY FOR UNDER $1000.00!

Strength:

Inexpensive progressive scan player

Weakness:

Only 4:3 available for progressive scan output

I was was waiting for the availability of progressive scan DVD players before jumping on the DVD bandwagon (I still use Laserdisc). Being that I'm also buying a Pioneer PRO-510HD HDTV as well, I thought it was a great opportunity to see some of the latest DVD players on this TV without dragging them home with me.

Unfortunately, the salesman did not know very much about anything in the store and was having difficulty answering my questions, so I requested the manual for the Toshiba. I could not understand why we could only set up a 4:3 picture for the progressive scan outputs (default setting I thought). After reading the manual quickly, it seems that you can not change the aspect ratio on the progressive component outputs only. The NTSC component outputs will allow 16:9 or 4:3 which was confirmed in the manual.

My question/comment is this: Unless I read the manual too quickly, or the selection info is buried deep on a GUI, why would you buy a progressive DVD player and not have the option of screen size? It is a ridiculous design flaw which no one previous to me on this site has mentioned before. Am I wrong?

Bad remote

I thought about the 6200, JVC model and the upcoming Sonys, but at only $400 from a reputable e-tailor, I had to buy it. I'm sure that the next higher price model is at least $200 more. Key word here is a reputable dealer which 800.com is. Gotta have ps and at this price a definite 5. My Sony S530D cost me $360 in 1999.

Strength:

Great picture, especially with Anamorphic Widescreen formatted DVD's - Try "The Insider" for a breathtaking experience. This unit makes DVD movies look like they are film.

Weakness:

Progress scan is great, but you've got to have the right TV. Some DVD's will look distorted, though not the fault of the unit. Your TV might not be up to it.

A caution: Realize that this technology doesn't fit every possible setup scenario. I have a Pioneer projection HDTV 16:9 (SD-523HD5) and it works great. The picture on most DVD's is pristine. It depends, of course, on the DVD quality itself. Using Progressive Scan limits the screen formating capability of most TV's, so beware. One problem for most users will be that Widescreen Letterbox movies will appear somewhat distorted. This may bother some. It bothers me so I play those movies through the Interlaced Component connection using Monster Cable for an acceptable experience. Widescreen Letterbox is the older method for getting the full screen appearance. The newer method, Anamorphic Widescreen, plays just fine. While some DVD's might say that they are formatted to fit 16:9 TV, when using progressive scan, they will not fill the screen completely, but the picture is very good so I can live with it. Lots of people are asking whether to buy the Toshiba SD-5109 or the Mitsubishi DD-6000. Buy the Toshiba because Toshiba makes the DD-6000 for Mitsubishi. They are viturally the same machine except for cometics. The prices are comparable, but you get more features on the Toshiba. Buy it on the Internet - Go to Yahoo and Electronics for DVD players and find the lowest price. Internet prices beat most store prices by hundreds of dollars.
