Strength:

Thin and sleek. HDMI does enhance video

Weakness:

Sluggish response. Freezes and skips. Noisy motor

This Toshiba SD-5970 DVD player is sleek with its black and silver face and thin design; it definitely has a handsome look and is one of the prettiest DVD players that I’ve owned, and I’ve owned several. Now that I’ve dispensed with all of the positives, let me articulate the rest of the story. Toshiba ort to be ashamed to have put this unit on the market, and I should feel like a moron for buying it. This unit is a piece of junk from the word go, and has soured me so much that I might not buy another Toshiba product for a long time, if ever. First, the disk drive is noisy when spinning. I sit about 13 feet from my unit when I am trying (I will explain the use of the word “trying” later) to watching a movie and I can clearly hear the motor running. Second, to get any function be performed, the button for that function has to be depressed at least twice before this unit will respond. This applies to opening/closing the tray, play, pause or stop; this truly is aggravating. Third, and frankly the most annoying is the finicky way this unit performs with playing a DVD or video CD. The disk has to be cleaned to the point of perfection in order for this Toshiba player to not skip or freeze. I have lost count of the number of times that while trying to watch a movie, I’ve had to get up and extract the disk (after pushing the open button twice or more times) and clean it in order for the movie to play. The same disk plays un-interrupted in my JVC player I was attracted to this unit because its HDMI output and I must admit that the picture quality is somewhat better than component video, but not by that much. Be good to yourself – do not buy this piece of crap

Strength:

HDMI connection brings out the best picture possible. Price. Reads a wide range variety of formats (like most players do these days)

Weakness:

Very slow mechanism. Takes more than 15 seconds to "load & analyze" the DVD before it displays the menu. Takes seconds to open the tray. Extremely bad remote control range.

I'm really considering to return this product. But then I'd lose the s/h charge because I bought this on Ebay.

Strength:

Easy setup

Weakness:

HDMI issues, freezes up, bad remote range and slow, issues with dvd-r disks.

I bought the Toshiba SD-5970 with my Toshiba 57" television thinking this would be a good match. I have had nothing but problems with this dvd player. It freezes up. It does not play dvd-r dvd's well. The remote is slow and does not have good range. Toshiba has many bugs to fix with this dvd player. This is the 4th dvd player I have taken back for the same model. I am waiting for Yamaha to come out with their HDMI dvd player. Do you yourself a favor and do not buy this piece of crap!
