This is just an update to my previous post. Everyone seems to love this unit! Perhaps I was a bit too harsh in my previous review because I wrote it right after I found out that there was no way to have my unit looked at under warranty. I have continued using it, and on the positive side, the DVD only locks up on 3 of the 30+ DVDs I have played on it. The hiss is still there, but the remote thankfully rests at the bottom of a junk drawer having been replaced by a universal remote.

However, I would like to note that in the 8 or so months since my previous review panning this unit, I have received emails from at least 7 different people complaining about different problems (some hissing, some DVD lock ups, one unit ceasing to play DVDs at all, and one dead unit). Given the production volumes Toshiba must do on these, a few malfunctioning units are to be expected, but I am amazed that these people feel like emailing me but not posting a review here. Perhaps the criticism lavished on my previous review scared them away. Regardless, to any of you having problems, I am sorry, but I don't know how to fix them! And don't be bullied by everyone giving such great reviews for this product. Go ahead and post your own reviews.

I now would rate this product with 3 stars for value and 3 stars for an overall rating (the picture the unit puts out is really quite good), but I don't want to unfairly skew the ratings lower for this product. Thus I will give it 4's - as close to the 4.3 average as I can get (unfortunately the form will not let you submit a follow-up comment without giving some sort of rating).

Strength:

All in one, Onkyo receiver, picture quality, dd, dts.

Weakness:

All in one, poor CD playback

Have had zero experience with "home entertainment" systems till I bought this, but have learned quite a bit in an effort to take advantage of its capabilities. Unit is connected to an older TV through coax cables, but is also connected to multiple speakers (no sub) which provides very good surround sound with DD 5.1. Image quality is quite clear for an older TV, certainly better than any cable or VCR image.
Biggest complaint would be CD playback. Sound quality seems dull and muddied. Does not seem to be very good separation between bass, mids and treble until the volume is turned way up. This is only with CDs. DVD, pass through and other components sound good.
Also does not play all multimedia CDRs.
Over all, if you mainly use it to watch DVDs, it is a killer unit. More than enough power, clear and crisp sound and excellent picture for any modestly priced home theatre. If you are an audiophile, forget it.

Weakness:

Remote is not so bad you can get used to it,
Receiver is entry level receiver, can't set crossovers, only has spring type speaker connections, noticible hiss passed to speakers, only 50 Watts/channel

A good combination between the Toshiba stanalone dvd players and onkyo receiver, this is my college dorm setup, as compared to my home home theater. The best thing about it is it's price. Only about $300 online and one less set of cables because of the integration of the dvdplayer and receiver. The dvd performance is identical to Toshiba's standalone players and equally as good.
Receiver in my opionion has a few glitches but is on par with other entry level receiver. The worst thing for me, is that it puts out a noticible hiss whenever it's playing. This really is noticible when listening to music, but if you're watching a movie you may forget about it or just turn up the volume. 50 Watts/channel is a little slim. I'm using efficient bookshelf type speakers, and don't never need to turn the volume up pass 50 (out of 100), the receiver is starting to strain at that point, and is tweaking the sound. The best thing about a receiver that can put out 100 watts is that it sounds good at all power levels, the 6109 starts to strain when it gets high.
The speaker connections are the spring type clips. If you use 14 guage or 12 guage wire to your speakers, you will need to get straight pins to get that fat wire into the dinky little connecter, even so, I do not feel that the connections are as solid as if they used binding posts. Not enough audio outs, or audio ins, but again if you are in a dorm or apartment where you don't have that many things to connect, you will be OK.
The price is really good, this unit provides good bang for your buck. It is worse than a decent receiver and standalone dvdplayer, but if you don't have that much HT equiptment, and space and the extra $300 or so is more important to you, than it is a good buy.

Strength:

Great value, easy to use features

Weakness:

Doesn't play burned CD's, Bad remote design, not enough power(for the speakers)

I got this for about 320 from shop.theglobe.com using an 25% off coupon. It is an excellent DVD player and is a great for someone who is just starting to build a home system. The only problem is that 50 watts may not be enough for some poeple. Also, the remote is too busy. Except the volume buttons, all the buttons are these little rubber buttons, making it very easy to accidently hit another button. I definitely would recommend this to any of you who are just starting out, but for those hardcore audio fans, you may want to pass this one up

Strength:

wonderful sound, easy to use, compact,DTS&DD all in one very
nice package.

Weakness:

the inputs are too closely spaced and there aren't enough of them. no phono input

Was I happy to discover this combo product at Chirstmas last
year. I had run out of room in my entertainment center, and I wanted to upgrade to Dolby Digital. Then along comes this cool DD receiver with a DVD player together? At first I was
concerned that 50x5 watts wasn't going to be enough. After using this unit for 7 months I can honestly tell you it's
plenty of power in my family room. My room measures 16x20. The fidelity is what has really impressed me with this unit.
I do wish the tuner was better and that there were more DSP settings, and the remote control was backlit.

The other equipment being used includes;TV, Hi-fi vcr, dual tape deck, 5 disc cd changer, satellite dish, 5 Boston Acoustic HD-5's + a Boston powered subwoofer. I rate this unit 4.5 overall

Strength:

All in one, DTS, DD

Weakness:

Underpowered, remote, not enough video inputs/passthroughs, cannot manually select Surround Sound mode

Remote is pathetic, esp at night [i.e. turning on a lamp]

Power is NOT enough for 5 speakers: I have 2 5.25 mid"/1" tweeter satellites hooked up to a powered sub amp, and 3 4"mid/1/2" tweeter for the center and rears and in my apartment, I have to boost the power up to 4/5 to get it loud. In contrast, my old 60w*2/15w*3 Pioneer Prologic got just as loud at 1/5 of the volume level.

If playing either a music CD or DD DVD [I forgot which], you cannot select any of the DSP modes-hall,surround,party.

Not enough video inputs/passthroughs: I have a VCR, TV, playstation, cassette deck, and I'm maxed out.

No CDr/CDrw but that's expected.

Gripes aside, it's a great deal at the $300 I paid for it. But when I get more cash, I'm selling it and getting a standalone DD receiver with more power.

Strength:

Price, footprint, quality build, integration

Weakness:

Remote does really drive you nuts
Remote can really drive you bonkers, especially in dark

By and large, everyone got this right, except for the fringe lunatic audiophiles that live for the $800 per foot cable purchase do they can enjoy the finely nuanced eyelash you might have missed. It's all most of us need to enjoy the wonders of DVD, pump up the volume without having blood flow out of our eardrums and just kick back and enjoy without fretting about "specs". The remote is poor to say the least, everyone got that right as well.
For under $300, I can't see doing any better. The cost/benefit equation is way skewed in the favor of the consumer on this one.

Strength:

* Price
* All-in-one
* Dolby Digital and DTS decoders built-in.

Weakness:

* Cannot tune to some FM stations which to which I can tune to well on a personal radio. Terk antenna did not help either.
* Seems difficult to hook up a tape deck.

* Excellent system for price.
* Compact and usable for apartment with adequate power (for JBL S-24 5 speaker set). Any louder would bring neighbors knocking at the door.
* Great for those who don't want to mess with multiple component systems and juggle with wires.
* Remote sucks but can get used to it.

Teeny, Tiny, Eensy, Weensy Remote that you MUST look at in light to change, thus interrupting the viewing

Great unit that fits the bill if you have a small space. Works great for our needs - family room DVD viewing. It's only locked up once or twice w/ rental DVDs. Great unit!
