Awesome Picture Quality

I just recieved this from Fedx yesterday. I currently own a Toshiba 65H80 TV. The picture was already awesome with Interlaced DVD. With the SD 6200 the picture is even better.
It looks more film like, and believe it or not the colors stand out better, with more detail. You know Fifth Element, A Thin Red Line just to name a couple of great movies demoed. Like before setup is important. Very Happy.

Strength:

Outstanding picture in using progessive output.

Weakness:

CD playback.

The picture quality from the 6200 is amazing, although as another reviewer mentioned it sems to have a greenish tint during low light scenes. I've watched the same DVD's on my friends el cheapo pioneer, and although the picture quality of the pioneer doesn't come close to the 6200, the pioneer exhibited no green tint. Is this a problem with my particular unit? or is there an adjustment I can make? Please email druss@mail.com with any suggestions.

CD sound quality was OK, although it didn't sound any better than my old Sony changer. All in all, when connected to my Toshiba 43HX70 and through my surround system, I forget all about the minor problems with this player. Can't beat it for the price right now.

Strength:

Progressive Scan, Twin DVD tray, smooth fast forward and reverse. Video and sound quality are outstanding.

Weakness:

None

The Pioneer 434 was not compatible with my Toshiba DTV. While buying cables at a local audiophile shop I found this DVD on sale as it was their demo model. I hooked it up to my 61" widescreen and the picture was superb and better than the Pioneer. A Bug's Life Special Edition is a stunning transfer and looked 3D with vibrant colors and detail that is outstanding. Mi2 was a knockout with excellent flesh tones and an images that made me want to book a flight to Australia. I noticed the fast forward and reverse is very smooth and not choppy like the Pioneer. I have not played with all the features of this DVD player but I think it is an excellent player for the price. Home Theater Magazine has as excellent review in this month's issue. Also etown.com has a favorable review.

Strength:

Great picture, zoom function.

Thanks to the review from Darryl Chong I called the Good Guys right away. Sure enough they had the player on sale for $399.00, however they had no more new ones to sale. The salesman said he could sale me the floor model with 20% more off. I had him hold the unit until I could pick it up that night. When I got there the salesman informed me he had found an additional one in the back. He sold it to me for $319.00. I bought the 5 year extended warranty just in case. Thus for the unit and warranty I paid $399.00.

My wife, kids and I love the picture quality and sound. I have wanted a DVD player for a while however, I could not afford (nor justify) a $600 – 800 player, and the ones that were in the $300.00 range did not have the functions or quality I was looking for. To me this was the perfect deal, quality at a price that I could afford.

Thanks to all that have reviewed this unit and all the helpful hints. I believe I will be enjoying this player for a long time, or at least until the next $1200.00 DVD player sales for $319.00. That will be what, seven months from now?

Strength:

Nice menu, dual trays, progressive output

Weakness:

No CD-R, CD-RW, VCR-R, SVCD, SVCD-R support. Remote control blows, disc loading is slow, power on cycle is slow as well "Welcome to Toshiba DVD"

This is probably one of the best DVD players I've used. Hands-down! The dual tray DVD is great since you can load another disc while one is playing.

The image quality is superb, nice colour, execelent MPEG decoding, hard to see artifacting. Blacks are well defined and solid. (well, unfortunately it can't fix Jurassic Park or the Sopranos box set).

A few drawbacks:
- the remote is terrible, that stupid joystick style remote is really hard to use, I hear the DVD player beeping bit it doesn't do anything unless I fiddle with the stick a bit more (please.... no jokes)
- progressive decoder gets fooled some times, especially with film footage that has been edited with video gear after 3/2 pulldown, a few times I've seen interlaced lines on the progressive TV (Fight Club: that music video they have on the DVD). There were early reports that this was happening during movies... I haven't experienced this problem.
- no recorded medium support, ie. no CD-R, or CD-RW (so I can't play my VCD-R's or SVCD-R's on it).
- well... for that matter no SVCD support.

Don't get me wrong.... the drawbacks are MINOR.... if this player wasn't so damn expensive I would have gotten one for myself at home (I bought this for work).

Strength:

Build quality, plays CD-R/CD-RW, Progressive Scan Output,

Weakness:

Slow disc loading, Remote, No Smooth scan

The output quality of this unit exceeds anything I have yet to see. With the Progressive Scan on, and my Sony TV set to 16:9 Enhanced, the image quality comes close to HDTV.

Would have never bought this unit at the original $1200 price, but at $450, this is a exceptional value.

Since I use a Pronto Remote, the remote is a not an issue for me, so I am giving this unit 5 stars.

Strength:

Outstanding picture, progressive scan

Weakness:

remote is terrible

Have been using this unit for two weeks. Picture is outstanding (film mode, progressive). The remote is poorly conceived, and difficult to use.

The unit is connected to a B&K Reference 30 processor, and the Sony VW10HT. It is projected on a 120 inch, 16:9, Da-Lite screen with 1.3 gain.

Until purchasing the 6200 I was quite happy with the DVD performance from the Pioneer Elite DVL-91. The Toshiba video performance blows the Pioneer away.

Strength:

Picture quality, smooth layer change, aspect ratio compensation

Weakness:

Remote joystick (but you do get used to it!)

I'd been researching these for a while (having owned a Toshiba 3108), but could never bring myself to make the upgrade. When Good Guys dropped the price right down to $399 though, I went out and picked one up that afternoon. It was one of the best decisions I ever made.

I hooked it up to my Mitsu WT46805 and haven't looked back. Thanks to the info provided in the many great reviews on this site, I had absolutely no problem setting it up and having it running like a dream. The colors are far more rich than before and the image incredibly smooth and film-like. Sometimes it almost goes a little far in that some scenes appear a tad soft - if that really bothers some viewers however, it is possible to manually set up one of a 4-step graduation of edge-enhancement within the Progressive Video sub-menu. Not for me though, as this appearance tends to be a function of having gotten too used to the overly edge-enhanced transfers of many discs out there. I'm in the process of going back through many movies just to enjoy the beautifully enhanced picture.

The only minor complaints I have would be in the area of the remote (in line, as it appears, with many others). It takes a while to get used to the joystick in that it seems to be set a few degrees off in it's directions (either that or I have a crooked thumb). It only took me a few tries to get used to however. Another thing is the hidden progressive/interlaced button. In my opinion this should have been placed on the outside of the cover, or, if it had to be hidden - a slide-down rather than a flip-open cover would have been better. It would then be possible to do the operation one-handed.

These are pretty small quibbles in what is otherwise a great machine. At this price, it would be an incredible shame for anyone owning a progressive-capable TV not to make the upgrade. There are other progressive players out there, but I would think they'd be very hard-pressed to beat this level of quality and features at the current price level.

Weakness:

REMOTE REMOTE REMOTE

I chose this unit because of good reviews I've seen about it here and elsewhere and I'm glad I did. This is my first DVD player and the picture is just outstanding(remember to put it in film mode though).

The remote for this unit however really sucks. The joystick sometimes needs to be pushed 4,5 or even 6 times before it responds. Can't wait to get that Phillips Pronto.

Other than that I would highly reccomend this machine.
5.1 out is nice.
