Strength:

Good bang for the buck.

Weakness:

There are better DACs on the shelf and it's time to upgrade

Purchased 01/15/01. After replacing the first player, which for whatever reason wasn't working at speed, I've enjoyed the SD1600 with no problems other than the DVD layer transition (minor) situation. I've improved things along the way with better ICs and adding PS Audio Juice Bar and High Current Ultimate Outlet, for a very noticeable improvement in overall performance

Strength:

easy to hook up and easy to use. good picture quality and sound

Weakness:

doesn''t play all dvd movies. either they stop playing or no sound. It doesn''t play CD-R OR VCD and the major buttons are too small (rev, fwd, skip, stop, play, pause.)

I purchased the toshiba sd-1600 along with my big screen tv for Christmas. I enjoy it very much. But now I''m getting into having all of my old VHS movies replicated to VCD or CD-R using a DVD burner. Unfortnately if I new then what I now now about the sd-1600 not being able to play VCD OR CD-R I wouldn''t have wasted the money on it. Since burning your own movies and music is the big thing now. A new up-to-date dvd will cost more money and I need one for my house hold. And looking at all the other reviews I think as a first time buyer I paid to much. And I have found that many dvd movies don''t play so well or not at all. I purchased an old Bruce Lee dvd and there was no sound until a young computer kid told me to play with the audio button on the dvd remote. So I have found out that on some purchased DVD movies according to how the sound was produced by the manufacture I have to fiddle with the audio button to find the right audio.

DVD Player is great if you plan on buying original CD''s and DVD''s. Sounds great and looks great. Only had a few problems. Sometimes watching a moive its start distorting,(kinda like warped VHS tapes) Overall...i would not buy this again and i wouldnt even recommend it, unless you got if for an amazing deal. Strength:

Toshiba will fix things for you if you write to them. They hate angry customers.

Weakness:

VERY poor components. The repair guy told me they get Toshibas in a lot.

Do not buy low end Toshiba. Toshiba, however, agreed to pay for a $298 bill to fix a $150 DVD player..nuts huh? But we''ll see how it works once it is fixed. The entire transport assembly broke and I never gave it heavy useage. Buy a better brand, or a high end Toshiba. I hear Pioneer DVD is very good.

Strength:

DD, DTS, price, name, style, dimmer.

Weakness:

Mine makes ticking noise with disc, no optical.

The Toshiba is very simple to hook up. Have mine to a Denon using Coaxical, there is no optical out. Picture is excellent. Make sure the disc is clean, mine wouldn't run even with a tiny smudge on it. Has component video for future TV sets.
Menus are good. Remote is nothing special, but it is nicely layed out. It is not a setback like many say.
The almost inaudible ticking noise is never heard unless you stick your nose in front of the player.
I recommend the Toshiba to anyone.

Strength:

-Moderatly priced
-sharp clean picture, good sound
-reads almost anything!
-Seems to work with CD-R's!

Weakness:

No Optical out, small remote, but who cares?

This is a very solid low budget performer. This thing seems to handle anything I throw at it. It even reads really bad CD-R'S! I'm not sure if it is supposed to or not? Lots of outputs, and a very nice picture for the bux. If you want an all around budget performer, this is it. I compared this with a Pioneer 333, and this one is just as good or better, and $50 cheaper. I'm happy so far.

Strength:

Black Enhancement Feature
Zoom Feature
Great Sound
Great Image reproduction

Weakness:

NONE

I can not believe the quality and performance of this unit, given that the price is so damned reasonable. I am absolutely, 100% satisfied with this unit. The blank level enhancement feature is amazing.

For the money, you cannot go wrong with this unit.

Strength:

- Dolby compliant output
- onscreen menus
- full featured remote
- video component outputs
- Zoom

Weakness:

none

I have been researching "consumer priced" DVD players for over a year in the $250 and under range.

-Player: Overall is well built (similar in heft to Denon components I've owned for years.)

-Owners manual: is clear and useful. The welcome screen was a nice touch during set up.

-Remote control is full featured and designed to fit your hand well.

-Summary: This unit delivers zoom, simulated 3-D sound, Dolby 5.1 compliance and component video output for a great price!

My system:

- Boston Acoustic A20 speakers
- Denon DRA 325R receiver
- Sony CD player
- Toshiba 32" TV (stereo outputs)

Strength:

For the price, about everything.

Put together a HTS about a month ago and decided to go with a cheaper DVD, but better then what I had, until after the new year. I have been very impressed with the SD1600. Many have had problems with some DVDs, I have 20 DVDs and haven't experienced any problems. Not sure if it was a bug in the unit that was fixed before I got mine or what. Disk noise is pretty low compared to others I have heard. If you place it in a closed stand, one with a glass door, the noise is not even heard. Component video and digital coax hook ups is the only way to go. For the price, this a great DVD player to start with.
