Strength:

Clean pictures,good sounds

Weakness:

Remote,no scart,don't play CD-R or VCD

When I read the other reviews some of them says that the Toshiba SD1600 plays CD-R's,that is NOT true, not for me asnyway (2 bad since almost my entire CD collection consists of CD-R's).
There's no SCART but maybe you guys in the USA don't use them...Anyway I like my new DVD-player it gives me a picture that I didn't thought was possible (yes it's my first) even though it's a NTSC player (we have PAL in europe).
Very good, but how are you suppose 2 upgrade when it doesn't read CD-R's?

Strength:

Good Quality, Simple Design, ZOOM, connectors galore!

Weakness:

none that i've noticed yet, it does everything i want

I purchased this player recently for $150 locally and didn't have any problems with it. I liked the quality alot over my previous hi-fi vcr. The remote is simple and to the point, it has alot of options and features that other entry level players lacked. Plus this has the high-end connectors i plan to use in the future (component & digial coax audio). I have it connected composite into my vcr, then coax to the tv with just tv speakers (i know!) and it does a good job!!

Good Picture and Sound, Easy to use

Weakness:

Can't play CD-R's, Remote is nothing special, mine had something wrong with it

I got it at Best Buy and took it home to hook it up. I only have a stereo reciever with no surround sound and a basic 19" inch TV, but the picture and sound were great! It was my first DVD player. I counldn't play a single CD-R due to copyright problems Toshiba wanted to avoid, but since I had my old cd player still hooked up, I could excuse that fault. One think I couldn't excuse is the popping sound out of the left analog jack every time I changed chapters, pressed pause, and many other operations. I called Toshiba and they told me that they had never heard of that problem. I took it back and exchanged it for the Pioneer DVD-333 DVD player, which makes no popping sound and can play CD-R's. But Pioneer lacks zoom but has a few things here and there you could do that you couldn't on the Toshiba. The Toshiba is a good buy if you don't care about it playing CD-R's.

Strength:

Price; quality; features (esp. enhanced black)

Weakness:

No optical output; low quality cables

OK - here's the deal for anyone looking to get into DVD, or wondering about this player. This is a great unit, and will provide all you need for anyone but the 0.01% of all people who can officially be classified as DVD geeks. The only qualification I make here is that I have a separate CD player, and a higher-end DVD unit may be needed if you need the CD-playing capability on a high-end stereo system.

For those unfamilar with DVD, you need to get the video signal from the DVD player to your TV (via RCA jack, S-video, or component video - see what connections are available on your TV), then you need to get the audio signal to some speakers (RCA jacks for a stereo system, or digital receiver input for best Dolby 5.1/DTS sound - NO OPTICAL OUTPUTS ARE PROVIDED, as needed with older receivers).

YOU WILL NEED TO PURCHASE ADDITIONAL CABLES. The only cable provided with the SD-1600 is a low-end, 3-cable video type piece. The video cable is not well shielded, and results in less than ideal picture quality on even basic TV's. This does NOT mean you need to buy Monster cable, and spend mega bucks. You will also need cables if you wish to use any of the other outputs (component video, s-video, or digital audio). Again, this does NOT mean that you need Monster cables. I purchased a Monster digital audio cable for $40, then purchased an Acoustic Research digital audio cable for $10, and could not tell any difference. Similarly for the video cables. I returned the monster cables, and kept the Acoustic Research (www.accessories4less.com is a good source for these).

I bought the SD-1600 with Amazon discount code, free shipping, and Toshiba rebate, not all of which are still available, but this unit is worth $180 - $200. You may be able to save a little with a different manufacturer, but you'll be sorry you did.

Strength:

Great picture, zoom function, easy set up and menu functions

Weakness:

None

I did alot of research before buying this unit. I found this unit to be the best value for all the extras it gives you. The zoom function is great for those of us who don't have a huge TV. I sometimes just use the first zoom level, which only crops a little off the sides of the picture, to make the picture a little larger on my 27" TV. If you want you can enlarge a widescreen format movie to full screen without loosing any picture quality. The picture is crystal clear and colors are bright and vivid.

This DVD player has more extras then some models which cost twice what this player cost. Overall, a great value for the price tag. Bernies had it on sale for $199 minus a $30 coupon for all DVD players. Can't beat that.

Strength:

The unit is black and looks nice.

Weakness:

Playing DVD's.

This is for the sd-1700.
Hooks up easy enough. The remote has lots of buttons, and it feels flimsy. I had some DVD's already from using a different DVD player. They always played smoothly before. But this unit had problems with skipping and pausing or hitching on DVD's. Some DVD's played smoothly MOST of the time, and some DVD's couldn't play without at least a few hitches every minute or so. But I played about 7 DVD's, and not ONE played without some problems. That's disappointing, to say the least. But when it DID play, it looks very sharp and crisp. Makes me miss the glory days of VCR's in the 80's, when in those days the technology was exciting AND there were no hitches in playing tapes. So many people I talk with are disappointed in the fragile nature of DVD technology. Oh well.

Strength:

It's black.

Weakness:

Skips, pauses on playing DVD's.

Oh brother! I got an sd-1700 model. What a horrible mistake. How did this piece of junk get good reviews? I was so excited, I had some friends come over to watch the movie "Gladiator." All it did was pause and skip, then it would play for awhile, then it would skip over and over and OVER! I was SOOOO embarrassed. I tried several more movies, and they were unwatchable too. I was VERY unpopular that night. I thought: Okay, it's just a bad player. I took it back and got a replacement. SAME THING HAPPENED. I got different DVD's. That sure didn't make a difference. It just skips and pauses, sometimes for a minute or more, freezing the pictures while it tries to resume playing the DVD ("tries" being the keyword). Not even one DVD played fine all the way through.

Strength:

Ease of setup, S-video & DTS outputs, zoom feature.

Weakness:

Slow loading. The layout of the remote buttons could be better.

This is my first DVD, so was unsure of features or performance to look for. I have been very pleased with the easy setup and performance. The picture is crisp except at the 3x zoom where it does tend to look fuzzy and slightly out of focus. The remote has taken some time to get used to, I think it should be a littler larger and the layout improved (too many small buttons). I've seen better CD menus (like on my kid's playstation!). This seems to be a good choice for a starter system, though, and will even support future growth to a home theatre system.

Weakness:

remote (but who care unless you're really that lazy)

this dvd player is great. don't waiste any money on buying one under $450. the sound is more than what could be expected from a player in this price range. the picture is great, and it doesn't overheat while watching the matrix, even with my tv right on top of it. the 3d sound doesn't add a whole lot. the best upgrade in quality i found, to notice a substancial differene was from a marantz, which run about $550

Strength:

component video out, coax digital audio, price, black level enhancement

Weakness:

small remote, but not a big deal.

Excellent DVD player for newbies and small home theaters. I also have the Toshiba SD-2109 model, and this is identical as far as I can tell (just newer).

I have had no problems with this player. Layer changes are great and no lip sync problems.
