Strength:

On screen setup. Remote.

Weakness:

Optical Output - I'm upgrading my receiver and have to be conscience of input types and number.

Exchanged Samsung DVD-711 for this model. Samsung had a problem and with supply/demand what it is this time of year Toshiba seemed like a good exchange. I am very pleased with its performance. CD-R inoperablility not a factor. Easy to connect and operate. Samsung had a larger remote w/joystick I felt uneasy in its operation. I like the feel of the Toshiba remote and had it memorized in 1 week.

Strength:

Loaded with features for a great price.

Some other reviewers have mentioned problems playing CD-R's with this unit. However, I have not had any problems getting my CD-R's to work just fine.

Weakness:

The remote control is very hard to operate in the dark -- a backlit unit would have been very handy.

This is my first DVD player. I thought that to get a unit in my price range I would have to sacrifice features. However, I find this unit has more bells and whistles than I will ever need and it didn't break the bank.

My unit is hooked to the TV through an S-video cable. Although I am lacking more than a two-speaker stereo system, the sound and picture quality blow me away. It really is like watching TV for the very first time!

I have been using the unit almost a month now, and I have not had any problems either with the unit or getting it to play DVD's and CD-R's.

I would reccommend this unit to anyone who is thinking of making the jump from VHS to DVD.

Price.

Weakness:

Cannot play certain DVDs

Works on 3 or 4 DVD disks rented so far, but got a 'DISK ERROR' on a movie rented yesterday.
The disk would play OK on my PC's DVD-drive.
The same disk gave the same error on a friend's new Toshiba 1600. Took the movie back to the store and they said other people have had this problem with the Toshiba 1600.
After searching through this thread, I'm finding a number of people having this problem with the 1600 !
Does Toshiba plan to do anything about it? Is there a fix?
Can anyone suggest where to get help? Or do I take it back to the dealer, as my friend(s) are planning to do?

Good Reviews and Feedback from other users

Weakness:

Cannot play latest DVD release

I have just purchased this product after extensive research and felt I was getting a great deal. I paid 222 CDN at Visions, the same product was 300 at other stores, the only difference is the warranty is only three months.

I rented the Art of War and in the SD1600 gave me a disc error. I took the disc back to Block Buster and they tried it on their JVC and it worked fine. I still insisted and they gave me another copy. Same thing as soon as I got home. All other movies have been ok.

I took the movie to Visions and asked them to try it on their display SD1600's. It did not work. They quickly told me it was a defective movie. I made them try it on Sony and Pioneer and guess what. The movie plays fine!!

Why??? I am returning the DVD and getting the Sony but I will have to pay 100 more.

Visions seems to think this movie and many more to come pack a lot on their dvd and some players can't handle it.

Does anybody have any ideas

Thanks

Strength:

Great value for the money ( plus 3 free dvd's ),picture and sound on par with units costing near double , ease of use, good manual. A nice design and good build .

Weakness:

None found yet - has done all i asked so far. Transport is solid but a wee noisey ( whir while in motion )- but i had my ear right up to casework and hi-fi volume off .

Just picked this unit up yesterday from Future Shop - 299.00 Canadian plus a mail in voucher for 3 free DVD titles . Hooked into the system last night and plugged and powered up . Let it cook for the night playing a CD and it was ready to roll today .

For the money spent this machine performs very nicely - sound and picture are better than i had expected coming from a unit in this price point. All the standard features are here plus some extras . Programming and use is a breeze .As mentioned this is my first DVD player - my VHS ( a fine machine itself) will not totally be retired but the sd1600 has made me ask " Why didnt i do this a year or two ago !?!" This is certainly a far better medium for watching movies ,and plugged into the hifi , its damn close to going to the Super Cineplex theater !!!

music cds play quite nicely on this machine - but mine sd1600 has two high end Marantz cd players on the same rack so cd playback was not a requirement on this purchase.

Simply put , this machine performs just wonderfully . Picture quality is excellent ( on 6 year old Sharp 27 ")and sound is very precise and dynamic range is incredible.

I have rented perhaps 4 videos in the last 3 months -- but with this dvd ive rented 4 today and bought Underworld "everything everything" live concert DVD. With this unit movies are fun again !!!!

Regards Shawn

CD-Rs!

Weakness:

Remote. The SD1200 didn't play CD-Rs, but the SD1600 will.

I actually purchased the SD-1200. The reason for putting this review here was to inform the guy interested in buying this for a X-Mas gift. The SD-1600 will play store bought music CDs! I don't know where you were asking this question, but the help must be pretty stupid! I don't see how people can sell these things and not be able to answer such easy questions.

I purchased the SD-1200 and it is AWESOME. The only knock is the remote, but I use a universal remote. If you have a home theatre, you should be using a universal remote anyway! The other knock is that it's not the SD-1600! I wish I would've waited and got the SD1600..., it plays CD-Rs!

Presently shopping for SD-1200 (290 cdn) or SD-1600 (300 cdn). Is the SD-1200 and SD-1600 technically the same or is the 1200 more advanced since it can play VCD (1600 can not).

Also found it weird that 1200 model I saw was made in August 2000 and 1600 model in July 2000.

Thanks.

Will post review once buy.

This thing is great. Great sound compared to the Samsuck I had about a week ago, and not a single skip out of it. Decent menu control, just all-round great product, especially for just $200. Highly suggest it if you're looking for a good DVD player on a budget.

Strength:

Price, picture quality, surround sound modes, remote control, digital zoom.

Weakness:

No s-video cable included.

This is one hell of a great buy. The overall quality for the price makes it very hard to compare with other models. Unless you need progressive scan, built in decoding or a multi-disc player there is no reason to buy anything else. 5 stars on both for it's price and quality. Is it the best one out there? No, but you can buy 5 of these for what the high end models will cost you.
