Strength:

Good picture, sound, price and 1X-4X ZOOM.

Weakness:

No optical or 5.1 output, slow loading and menu choices are slow. Remote is not multibrand. 90 day labor warranty.

I think this a great "bang for the buck" player. I have tested several players in my home over the last few weeks and settled with the SD-1600.

The sound quality and picture quality is great for the price. I really like the zoom feature, if you are watching a wide screen format movie and don't like the big bars at the top and bottom of the screen you just zoom in 1X and the picture size is nicely increased without distortion. You will loose a little of the sides of the movie but it is not noticeable to me. Unlike some of the other players with zoom the Toshiba players do not distort or look blocky when you zoom and the picture stays very smooth and clear.

The only thing I do not like is the lack of optical output. I ended up using the coax output and it is very clear. The remote is efficient for the player since it does not have a lot of frills. The menus are a little slow responding and it does not support HDCD as far as I can tell.

I tried the following;
Sony DVP-S560D - New unit. Very nice player but it lacked zoom. If this player had zoom I would have kept it. Many nice features including multibrand remote.
Toshiba 5109 - Open box from Best Buy. The remote on this unit was flaky and I was afraid to keep it.Many nice options.
Toshiba SD-3105 - From Ubid but was cosmetically damaged in shipping. Great unit! Included the fourthings I was looking for, clear picture, great sound, optical digital output and zoom.
Pioneer DV-434 - New. I really disliked this player, poor picture and sound. No zoom.
JVC XV-M565BK - New. This was not as nice a s the Toshibas or Sony. It was better than the Pioneer. The faults were no zoom and cheap transport for the three tray loader.

If you are looking for a no frills player and don't need optical or 5.1 output then the Toshiba SD-1600 is a very nice unit.

I am giving it a five star rating for what is does. There is a lot it does not do but what can you expect for $157.00?

Strength:

Great audio, picture, black level, digital outputs

Weakness:

light pause on layer change in "Gone in 60 Seconds"

I owned this product since January 2001 and never had a problem with it. Great DVD player. Even when it was accidentaly dropped it still plays fine. It has both coaxial and optical digital outputs. It plays all the DVD's I put in it without a glitch execpt for the one in Gone in 60 seconds.

Other Components:
JVC 32" tv
Technics SA-DX950 reciever
AR psc25 center
Pioneer towers bought at costco
KLH k-sub10 also at costco (added polyfill to tighten up)

Strength:

component out

I recommend staying away from the low end of Toshiba's DVD offering. My SD-1600 needed a $100. repair for a broken IR transmitter within 6 months. Also, it will not play several disks. A friend has another lower end Toshiba and his remote broke too.

Strength:

Great picture, great sound

Weakness:

Doesn't play many dvd's

Just want to tell anyone who's looking to purchase this piece of s*$t not to do it..seriously, thing worked great now won't play many dvds So the next step was to call Toshiba technical support and they said that I need a firmware upgrade..BS. I've had the upgrade done on a previous Samsung unit and didn't do any good! I have friends with other Toshiba units that play fine..you get what you pay for, buy a Sony or some other better unit. Dont' waste your time, or buy a mroe expensive Toshiba..I think their cheaper products are complete garbage.

Great Picture & Sound

Weakness:

None for me

This player has played every DVD put in it. There have been a couple of times that a movie started freezing up, but all in all, I've been very happy with it. I have 4 kids ages 11 - 16 and for it to not have any problems with the useage we give it, says a lot.

Just wanted to add a note to my previous review (2nd one below this)....

I have an sd-1600u...I have seen some models in stores with different suffixes (one was "n" I think). Don't know if this makes a difference or not.

Also to Chuck (below)...this player DOES support 5.1 via the digital (coax) out.

Strength:

Video levels (the black is great!) solid picture, great sound features (the dialogue enhancer)

Weakness:

Ummm - doesn't play DVD's well, no toslink out (coax only)

I got the SD-1700 because I could not find the 1600. I thought they would be the same. The features and all are excellent but it seems to choke on most dvd's. Brand new Miss Congeniality (sp?) it seem to lock up in several spots in the movie, so bad it made it almost unwatchable. Princess Monoake - same thing but worse, it would freeze up every few seconds. Princess was a renatl but the disk appeared undamaged, Miss Con was a buy brand new out of the box. I am going to take it back, maybe I got a bum unit but as crappy as my samsung is, the only dvd it ever choked on was the Matrix.
