Strength:

GREAT COLOR!!! Nice ZOOM option. Easy to use. Good price.

Weakness:

Remote is small, had to buy a $29.99 box due to it not having a coaxl connection, but other than that, it is really a nice unit.

Granted, I haven't had the player long, but I really liked the picture. If you like the black band on the picture you can have it or if you don't you can zoom it in and not have the band. Other reviews have stated that they hear the turning of the CD......haven't heard it yet. I agree with everyone on the remotes size.... It is small, but if you look at it and read, it will do everything you want it to do.
I will post another review after it has been 1-3 months of using it and see if my thoughts are the same! As for now, I really do like this machine. The picture is really very nice and I am using an older T.V.

I just want to say a few words to offset lots raving reviews about this player: I myself read a whole bunch of those and finally desided that may be sd-2300 isn't worth the money.
So I grabbed a few CD's and went to the local Best Buy today. It didn't read my CD-R's as some people said it might, but that's Ok, this is not the issue. I read in the previous reviews that this player might not play some DVD's and in fact one person mentions "Art of War", so I rented this DVD and put it into the sd-1600 unit. Guess what: It played it for about 37 seconds and then it would just shut up. Same story with the sd-2150. sd-2300 was the only low-to-middle-end toshiba in store that would play "art of war". not to mention that this is the only brand with this problem. I just don't understand - say the newly-released 2300 is adapted to those [supposedly] new-generation DVD's. However what if in half-year there is another new-generation DVD coming out? I can only guess that toshiba is simply adjusting its low-end players "on-the-fly" and in half-year you will need a new player, even though at this moment you honestly believe this one is great. I've always been a fan of toshiba (I have toshiba VCR, FYI), but what a crap...

Strength:

Fills the bill for upgrading to dvd and having a older fairly high end system.

Weakness:

The first SD1600 that came home was returned due to freezing in the same location with various dvds.

Reading the reviews from several web sites got me interested in this product. With no punches pulled, and having little faith in the pablum issued by sales staff, and after finally getting a unit that functioned properly and living with it for awhile, I have enjoyed my little SD1600 and only noticed the brief layer change in the middle of play being the only minor glitch this player has had. The audio portion sounds fine, other than at very low levels due to the old Mitsu tv audio feed, it goes very well with an old Pioneer 1250 and Classic 901 VI.
When enjoying concert discs, I still need to harness myself to the sofa to avoid being blow thru the wall. The vedio also fills the bill and makes the tv shine as if it were a new high end addition. Since I have nothing to compare to as far as a previous DVD player, this first purchase has been a joy and Best Buy treated me as they always have when returning a problem product: no problems other than traffic getting into the store. Since I have no comparison with another dvd and in my view there is no such thing as perfection, other than my lovely wife, I rate the SD1600 as follows:

It would be nice if the remote were backlit.

The Toshiba SD 1600 is my first experience with a DVD. I was considering the purchase of a Toshiba 43H70 TV at Best Buy and they were willing to throw in the unit with it. After reading the reviews here I figured I couldn't lose. Thus far, I am very happy with the product. I have experienced no problems with it, don't get the noise posted by some reviewers, and find it easy to use. Picture quality with my Toshiba large sreen TV is stunning!

Strength:

-Consumer reports- excellent perfromance-

Weakness:

Does not play CD-R's - remote -

Bought at Sears-- took it back immediately after finding the SD1700 If you are looking to buy the Toshiba 1600--- hold one. I burn CD's and couldn't find a reasonably priced, quality DVD that could read them. I was going to settle for a DVD that only played regular audio CD's -- then I found one. Look into the Toshiba SD-1700. It is about the same price. I paid $179.00 at AAFES (military base exchange for you civilians). It also has another one-up on the 1600. The 1600 does not have a digital optical audio port-- yes I believe it has an RCA port, but for better audio the optical port is the choice. The remotes are not back lit and take a bit of getting used to. These units are inexpensive and quality products. They have a great picture and once I have my new receiver (this week) I will be evaluating the entire system for performance. I will rate the 1600 for now, taking into mind the lack of optical audio and CD-R reading capability. After having the 1700 hooked up for a while I will fully document my opinion.

No VCD's

Like Charlie, this is a review for the SD-1700.
Nice clean & still picture, need I say more.
Only witness a few burps durning layer changes on certain movies.
I had no problems cutting a CD-R full of music, and playing it. Now the manual says it will not play CD-R's ??? I did notice that VCD's will not work for me. But the CD-R disk are your basic CompUSA blues, with as many tracks as I can sqeeze on there, and I did close the session on the disk. My year plus old Raite 711 will play VCD's go figuer, being it's got to be the worst DVD player ever made !!! How many DVD throw out the tray hafe way when powering it off, about 1 in ten times. Oh yea, how many players turn the power light on when you power it off, and visa-versa. The damn thing couldn't even get the letter box aspect ratio right, hafe my movies would be skewed.

I've had none of these problems with the SD-1700. I've always had the zoom, so thats not a big plus to me, but the blacker then black feature is nice. The coxial output is fine to me, since I have a Sony 845, and hear that the difference between coxial, and optical are subjective.

I am very happy i made the switch from an apex ad-660 to the toshiba sd1600. It can not be compared to the ap-660.
I had purchased the apex in october 2000,and after 4 months of use i had to return it to the store where i had puchased
it due to defects. That is when the salesman introduced me
to the Toshiba SD-1600 let me tell you i was very impressed,
that is when i decided to purchase it. I returned home with
it and i havn`t looked back. It is an execelent machine I am very satisfied, you get alot of features at a lesser price.

This review is actually for the Toshiba SD-1700. I am very impressed with this unit.
I originally purchased a GE 1106 which had serious problems with skipping thru chapters on disks. I had read quite a number of reviews on DVD units around the 200 dollar range. When trying buying a second unit I opted for the Panasonic RV30. The Panasonic had excellent picture quality as I had expected, but it was lacking in additional user features.
After reading about the Toshiba's SD-1600 additional features (such as zoom) I decided to go with this unit instead. What a smart decision. As it turns out the unit I purchased from Target is the newly released SD-1700 which replaces the 1600 I assume. The picture quality is superb and every bit as good as the Panasonic. What sets the Toshiba apart is the additional 3x Zoom feature as well as custom Picture and Audio settings which allow the viewer to adjust the picture comtrast, saturation etc.on the fly. Main picture and and audio settings for the unit are also adjustable on the fly.
I had read that some users had issues with the SD-1600 not being able to save the position of the movie when shutting down. This apparently has been addressed in the SD-1700 as it does save the position. It also has a screensaver.
I could not be happier and feel that this is a great bargain at this price.
Highly recommended.

Strength:

Remote, picture Quality, Sound Quality, added features not found on other DVD players, Three levels of Zoom

Weakness:

Won't play Standard VCD's, Sometimes slow loading,

I really like this Player, the picture is just fantastic.
I tried making a vcd with Nero, but the
dvd player said "Check Disk" when I inserted it,
I put an Audio disk in the drive, exact same type of media,
and it played the music just fine.
Overall, I really like this player, for the price.
