Strength:

easy to manage
great picture quality
neat features on remote
good price

Weakness:

none to date (see summary for minor default)

Before buying this DVD player, all I knew was that I wanted a nice, cheap one that would work sufficiently. After speaking to the sales person who seemed to know what he was talking about, I opted for this one because it seemed like the best deal for what I was looking for. Initially, it worked fine, and then for some reason, the DVDs would start skipping and at each chapter selection, the color would fade. It happened for a couple of months, and so I took it in to Best Buy to get it fixed and they told me nothing was wrong. I took it home and after I re-hooked it up, it worked perfectly fine, so I'm assuming that it was my inadequate abilities in setting it up because, in actuality, it is a very simple process. Now, it works perfectly fine, and I have no complaints. I would recommend this DVD player to anyone who is looking for a good buy and not looking for anything highly intricate. Great price, great quality.

Strength:

Price, features, reliability, fuctionality

Weakness:

No major weaknesses

I purchased this DVD player a few weeks ago and I am completely and totally satisfied with it. With it being my first DVD player, I don't have any firsthand experience with other players, but comparing it to others peoples' players that I have seen, I believe that you can't beat it for the price. Using a Sony Wega KV32FS13 (32"), the picture quality is superb and the clarity is impeccable. There has been no problems playing any DVDs so far and it has displayed them all perfectly. Also, some people have complained about the remote, but as for me, I think it provides everything I need in a not-too-complicated format. Overall, this is a great DVD player to purchase, whether it is your first one or you tenth one.

Strength:

Price, features, sound and picture quality. Reliable.

Weakness:

It's very plain looking. No toslink connection.

I am very pleased with this DVD player so far. It seems to be a real bargain for the money. I especially like the zoom feature and the enhanced black-level option. Another great thing, it came with 10 free DVD rentals from Hollywood Video. That's new releases as well.

I know a guy with a Kenwood player and another with a JVC and each of them has had their player in the shop three times in less than six months! That's terrible. On the flipside, I know another guy who has owned the Toshiba SD1600 (which was replaced by the 1700) for a year and has nothing but positive things to say about his player.

I did massive amounts of research before finally selecting this DVD player, as I always do with any electronics purchase. The Toshiba name kept popping up, time and time again. I was more concerned with quality and reliability than anything. Let's face it, DVD players are made to sell, not to last. But I hope my Toshiba lasts forever! Great product, go buy it.

Strength:

A very nice all around DVD player. Great Features! Great audio and video!

Weakness:

A strange remote.

I had originally bought the Magnavox DVD611 player. But after unpacking it and finding out that it sucked, I went back to Best Buy and picked up the Toshiba SD1700. I have had it for several weeks now, and I'm very impressed with this DVD player. This thing is loaded with features like, different picture and sound enhancements. The video and sound quality are superb! I really enjoy this DVD player and would recommend it to anyone looking for an inexpensive and stellar DVD Player.

Strength:

Digital out, steady picture, component outs

Weakness:

No CD-R read (have to use the 2700 which is $20 more)

I love this DVD player. I am using it with at Yamaha reciver that takes the digital out and does the DTS, Dolby Digital and DAC for the player.

The picture is clean and steady. I have seen the player pause just once (on a scrached disk admittedly) but appart from that no compaints.

Just think if you should pay the $20 more for the player with CD-R support.

Strength:

Simple packaging, easy to setup. Multiple outputs are a good strength.

Weakness:

None so far. Would love an RF remote, but that's not typical.

We're generally very happy with the SD1700 unit. I picked this one to find on eBay after reading 1600 and 1700 reviews here on audioreview. Wanted something to put into a home system (not theater, just standalone). Didn't want to spend more than $200 or so. Happened to find various SD's on eBay. It's our first DVD player having been through many VHS players and the quality of DVD on both this player and the Playstation 2 is so much better than VHS.

Strength:

-Great Price($159)
-zoom

Weakness:

-no optical audio output
-90 day warranty(Sony has 1 year parts/90 day labor)

I just bought this player recently and am pretty happy with it so far. As this is just a basic player, I'm primarily looking for a player that reliably plays DVD's. The picture is excellent, although I don't have anything to compare it with. One thing that annoys me is the lack of a frame-by-frame backward ability. overall, this is a great basic product at the price as long as the reliability holds up, which only time will tell.

Strength:

Price, Zoom works nice, component output, display dimmer

Weakness:

Slow menu scan, Poor display panel, no Optical, busy setup display,

Sears matched internet price no problem.

I use this unit only for DVD with DD and DTS.
Unit seems to work very well although could not tell any difference in quality than with the Apex. I have more confidence in the reliability on this unit than the Apex though.
The display panel is poor. The chapter number and time are very hard to read from 10' away this is a problem for me as I like to see how far into the movie I am without using the remote. Unit does not have optical as this probably is not an issue with audio quality as oppossed to not having option, if you only have one dig coax on your receiver like mine has. I have one more unit to test the Panasonic RV30K for about $10 more.

Strength:

Enhanced black level (0 IRE)
Zoom function
Picture and Sound quality in a player in this price range

Weakness:

No optical digital output
Remote should be back lit and control the volume on a A/V Receiver

Superb, the picture and sound quality are outstanding for a player in this price range. Would have liked a optical digital output. As with most remotes in this price range, no backlighting. The only question that remains is it's reliability over 2 to 3 years.
