Strength:

Reliable. Easy to use. No problems in a year and a half of almost daily use.

Weakness:

Sound output is really, really, really weak!! Remote's a little TOO small - buttons are hard to operate and read in low light. Incompatibility with some DVDs, which may not be fault of the player.

Review is for model 2050, which appears nearly identical to the 2150. Has been reliable and easy-to-use. Dual disc tray feature not used very much. My big problem is the sound output, which is really weak. We need to turn the speakers up at least 50 percent higher than with our VCR or straight TV to hear a DVD, to the point where speaker hiss is apparent. I wish manufacturers would post the sound signal specs on the box, so I could a better informed buy next time. Some DVDs, such as the Monty Python's Holy Grail Special Edition, will not run on this unit - the subtitles keep turning on for no apparent reason and it's impossible to turn them off.

Strength:

picture, and sound are excellent copmared to others in this price range

Weakness:

no optical out, don''t really care, just nice to have the option. the onscreen menu is descent but i have seen better, but who cares you set it and leave it, and rarley have to look at it again

out of all my components, this is the one that I am the most impressed with. it''s the only one I haven''t upgraded, and don''t want to unless I get progressive, but don''t have the TV for that. I love Toshiba, always have, good quality unit. I have played hundreds, literally hundreds of movies on it, and I have never had a problem with it, ever. I highly reccomend this as well as any other Toshiba product.

Dual Disc, you can sit on the couch for two movies without gettin up

Weakness:

I haven''t found any

I love this player. Of Course it is my first DVD player so I can''t really write a valid review for enthusiasts. But to the first time buyers? It''s a great price as you see from the one guy $150!!!! How can you go wrong, it''s a TOSHIBA

Strength:

Picture and sound clarity; great value; DTS output

Weakness:

slight delay in layer change; no optical digital output

This is my first DVD player and I love it! I have no complaints thusfar and am extremely happy with my purchase. Overall this product represents good value for the money and is a great start to my home theatre system. Features like the Spatializer® N-2-2™ Virtual Surround Sound are a nice for those of us in the process of gradually building a home theatre system.

Despite what the manual says, it does play CD-Rs. I tested it using a burned audio disc and the sound quality was fine.

The two DVD capacity is a feature I find less than useful. I haven't used it thusfar and don't antisipate loading two discs for successive viewing. The exercise between the two features might kill me! :)

I have noticed a minor delay as the DVD changes layers, but this is minimal and tolerable.

Both optical and coaxial outputs would be nice, rather than only the coaxial. But this is a minor complaint.

The zoom become slightly pixelated at 3X, but then I have no intention of watching things at 3X zoom.

Overall, a very good value packed with lots of features and great picture and sound quality.

Strength:

Picture and sound (what else would you really want?)

Weakness:

Remote sensor, documentation

After bringing home several DVD players, this will be a keeper.
The first Philips (751) was some kind of multi-featured odd build and great except it had 2 bad habits:
1) Annoying 2-5 second pauses between layers
2) Fast forward and rewind would occasionally not work unless you stopped the disc, opened the drawer and reloaded.
The pause I could accept as part of the dual laser system, but the other problem seemed to forcast more misery to come.

The second Philips had all the bad features of the first and none of the good - the remote was tiny, the picture was not much different from VHS, and the sound was bad. The bass was boomy and the rest was bright and harsh.

The Panasonic was not bad. The extra features were fun, but not of any use to me and ther was no Zoom. The picture was quite good, though the color saturation was a bit too much and tended to smear the picture unless you cut the gain on the TV way back. The build quality seemed solid, though small and light.

The Toshiba is greatly superior in sound and video quality to any of the rest. The picture is less color-strong, but accurate and crisp. The sound is less "in your face", but much more natural and lacking in nothing. I have had use for the 2 drawers as some DVD's come with 2 discs. It's great to be able to switch discs without having to handle them. It is good for playing cd's as well. You can have them repeat, or change the first one while the second is playing (without interuption). The continuous play feature for this is NOT well documented. You just have to repeat all.

Wish it would play CDR (mine would not). It played a CDR-W I made, but no other CD player I own would play it. WIERD!!!!

Anyway, the remote seems to be very directionally oriented and I have to point right at the player in order to get it to work (I usually sit off to the right). It has great features and the use of these is easier to manage than the same features on the other players. I am hoping it will hold up well. The drawers are too thin (much more so than other players) which causes concern. However, the rest of the product seems very solid. It's only $179.99n at Costco and their return policy (which I have thoroughly tested) is the best.
Will update this review if indicated.

Picture, sound

Weakness:

Thumb between menues. No Optical output

Great picture and vivid colors, Biggest complaint is the fact that it oes not have a optical output. (The Guy at ABC wharehouse said it did, but hey can't blame him being stupid on Toshiba) DVD's look great on my Sony TV and my cds have never sounded this good. Well even thought it didn't have the optical output I liked the quality to much to return it.

Got this DVD player at Costco a couple of weeks ago. Excellent picture quality and enough functionality to keep me happy, hopefully for a long time. The coaxial audio out was a little incovenient for me since I had to buy another cable, but delivers superb audio quality for both DTS and Dolby Digital soundtracks and audio CDs. Great value for the money and as has been pointed out in this forum, Costco's return policy is fantastic and gives me a great deal of peace of mind, at least for the next year, especially with the experience I had with my last DVD player.

Strength:

When it works, the picture and sound were awesome.

Weakness:

Shoddy quality control. No longer functions.

Terrible product design and/or quality control. The laser pickup died in the first 60 days and was replaced. The REPLACEMENT died 60 days later, at which point the unit was out of warranty. When I insert the disc, I hear a faint clicking sound as the disc attempts to load. After a few seconds, I receive the dreaded "Disc Error" message. Once I get this message, I can still watch one or two more discs, but that's it! Poof! The "official" service center wants $110 in labor charges to repair this $150 unit -- and considering how well the first repair held up, I'm not sure it's worth it. In all, I've probably watched fewer than 30 movies in four months, which doesn't make this a very good value at all. This unit was highly reviewed on several Internet boards like this. Now I wonder who to believe.

Strength:

Excellent value, sound, ease of use and two disc capacity

Weakness:

Remote is cheap, lots of jaggies on picture

I had to buy a relatively inexpensive DVD player to fill in for my superb Toshiba 5109 that got recently fried by a lightning storm (took my DTV out as well). I did not expect to buy another Toshiba (since I was just looking for a super cheap fill-in), but I could not overlook the value of this player.
Best Buy sold it for $199.99... but there was a $50 rebate, so the actual cost was about $150! For that price, I could not justify going with some no-name bargain brand to save $10...

The 2150 has great sound and very good ease of use. The on-screen menu is exactly like the one on my 5109... This made learning to use the player a breeze. I actually had the player up and running (fully configured) in about 5 minutes from the time I opened the box.

Picture quality is really quite good for a non-progressive scan player (my 5109 is a progressive scan model). I do miss the lack of jagged edges the 5109 provided me though.

As for the remote... I definitely think Toshiba could have done better. I actually like their remotes on the whole, but this one had cheap written all over it... The good news for me is my 5109's remote also operates the 2150... so I am using that remote instead for the time being. I guess when price is considered, this is a small gripe.

So in summary, while overall, I have to knock off a star on performance due to my experience with superior progressive scan players like the 5109... I rate the 2150 a 5 star value player. It definitely delivers for its normal $200 cost, and considering the after rebate price I paid... it is an absolute steal. I will definitely hang on to this player once my 5109 is fixed... It will make an excellent bedroom DVD player.
