Strength:

Menus

Weakness:

CD Audio, no support for SVCD

I also couldn't get beyond the CD Audio. The vocals were over-pronounced and washed. The highs were too bright and harsh.

Also, I was in the market for a unit that supported SVCD playback and the unit didn't work with the CD-R SVCD I tested. I'll give 3 stars since it probably plays DVD video well.

Strength:

Outstanding audio sound! This plays audio CD's better than any CD Player I have ever had. The Sound is truly amazing. Very easy to use remote control. Built in DTS Decoder.

Weakness:

NONE

For the price and features there is not a better DVD Player on the market today. I have played MP3's, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD's without a hitch (even old scratched ones) and this player comes through with quality. I believe it would play a rock if you could get it in there. I was most impressed with the sound quality of this player and it's 192Khz DAC. If you don't have a lot of cash right now but want a quality player that will be around when you upgrade the rest of your Home Theatre system to your liking with HDTV. This is the one for you!!!

Strength:

It has everything you need from a dvd player with the price 249.

Weakness:

NONE

You can't go wrong with this DVD player. If you want to play mp3, make sure you play it 650MB CD-R not on 700MB disk and not on CD-RW. Those 2 are not recomended. The picture is very sharp and way way better than panasonic. The remote control is very easy to use and useful with V-control and Navi screen. With DVD-audio, once you listen to it you won't want go back to CD-audio anymore. You can't ask anymore from this DVD player at the price 249.

Strength:

Tons of features, good menus

Weakness:

Poor MP3 playability and chroma bug

Well, I wasn't happy with my panasonic RP56, the Tos 4700 sounded like it had everything I wanted so I bought one. Next day I sent it back. The chroma bug irked me, I would have thought they would have fixed it with the new series of players. The fact that it would not properly play MP3 discs that were recorded to the specs they called out (and play fine on other players) irked me. I did like its remote, the picture was good (expect for the chroma bug) though not quite as sharp as the Panasonics. I liked its menu and setup system. Had it not had the chroma bug and played MP3's great I would have kept it.

Strength:

Excellent Progressive Scan output, DVD Audio support, CD-RW MP3 support

Weakness:

Only supports 2 FF and Rewind speeds (as far as I can tell)

This player was bought as an upgrade to go w/my new HDTV set. I researched many progressive-scan DVD players over the last 8 weeks, and found this one to hit the sweet spot of features/cost. The SD5700 seems to be identical save the silver case and $50 greater price as opposed to the 4700's black case and lower cost...

The progressive scan output is very sharp, and stands up to other, more expensive players demo'd on the floor of audio/video stores (Sony, Pioneer). Many features, with a deep menu system to configure various options.

The digital output works great, and I've tested it out via my outboard decoder with both Dolby Digtal and DTS encoded DVDs (which both sound excellent, of course). I have not yet test out a DVD-Audio disc, yet.

I have not encountered any problems playing MP3s from home-burned CDs. I do wish the screen saver would kick in when MP3s were playing, though. A nice Winamp-style visualization would really be gravy...

Strength:

Progressive scan, DVD-Audio, plays everything, awsome picture & sound, any kind of output, remote is perfection.

Weakness:

No HDCD support but with DVD-Audio who cares - it blows HDCD away anyways.

This is one of the most value packed players around so when I heard about this player I knew I had to have it. I backordered it since none were available in my city yet and picked it up just as they were unloading the truck from Toshiba (got the box right from the dealers hands as I walked in). When I took it home and hooked it up to my Toshiba 43H70 TV (43" high def progressive rear projection) and my Yamaha receiver I was totally impressed.

The progressive picture is a whole new ballgame compared to my previous (one year old) interlaced Toshiba player. Toshiba's Colorstream Pro progressive picture is as good as it gets for picture quality in this price range. The so-called chroma bug mentioned in one review is not apparent if it even exists. From what I've read it's not really a problem - it's just the way that MPEG decoders in almost every kind of DVD player work and has gone largely unoticed for years! In summary, this Toshiba player/TV combo is almost like looking through a window! Pixels are pretty much imperceptable, there are no aliasing or artifacts and the picture is rich and highly detailed. The TV is half the equation so for the best results get high definition progressive and use good quality component cables. Also, I have found matching Brands is a good idea.

The sound is very nice. I use this player over my existing Yamaha CD player, it sounds incredible for CD music! I purchased "The Corrs - In Blue" DVD-Audio disc and regular CD's will never have the same appeal again. The 24-bit 96KHz audio playing discretely over 6 surround channels (or in 2 channel stereo if you prefer) is unlike anything I've ever heard (short of being in a studio). This is the future of hi-fi audio. Plus you get music videos, lyrics, pictures (I love the Corr sisters!!!) and more. It can be an engaging and interactive audiovisual experience or you can just enjoy the music. This player also playes CD, CD-R, CD-RW, and MP3s. I only play 700 Mb (80 min) CD-R's and have never had a problem. My CD-RWs and MP3s play seemlessly also.

The remote is perfection. Best remote I have ever used (and I have 5 on my coffee table).

Add optical, coaxial, 5.1, S-Video and component outputs (all gold plated) plus cool looks (blue LED, scrolling + fading matrix display, cool navi menu, etc.) all for $299 MSRP (the price quoted above as $399 is incorrect) and you have the best player in this price range. This DVD-Video/Audio Cinema Progressive player rocks!
