Strength:

Features, quiet loading, ease of use, silver finish(classy), operation from front panel

Weakness:

manual could be clearer, nothing else that would cause me not to buy this unit again

Wow! This a great player. I got it on a replacement warranty. My Pioneer 434 was giving me my some problems so I decided to trade it in. I''m so happy that I did. Right off the bat I was blown away at all the features. Way more than that Pioneer. One of the best features is the custom picture settings. The pictures is awesome and the sound is equally impressive. I have yet to try out the DVD-Audio(there are no titles out there that I can justify spending 25 bucks on). The only problem that I have found is with the screen saver. With it set to on I had a problem with the cursor on the menus of the movies, it would disappear. I was set to take it back. I decided to try turning the screen saver off and I haven''t seen the problem since. That''s fine with me, I did''nt need the s s anyway. Also the remote needs to be pointed directly at the unit to work. Hey with everything else this unit does those problems are elementary. I would reccomend this player to anyone. It has everything you need.

Strength:

Fabulous picture with widescreen tv''''s.

Weakness:

DTS needs decoding in Receiver so I can only use the Digital Dolby 5.1.

This Toshiba DVD player is amazing. I already owned a Sony and a non progressive scan Toshiba and was unsure whether to upgrade. I did and was floored by the picture on my Toshiba widescreen. I haven''''t tried cd''''s on it as I have a separate stero system for music but 5.1 sounds as good as it any I have heard. Setup is a breeze (Sony is a pain). I would recomend it to anyone needing decoding built in (I have a Denon receiver that is only Dolby Digital Ready). If your receiver has decoding just buy the 4700,that''''s the main difference.

Strength:

Cost, Features, Performance

Weakness:

Ease of switching formats. Manual,

The Toshiba 5700 is a very decent DVD player for the money. Last year you couldn''t find a DVD-Audio or SACD under $800 dollars. For $200-$350 this unit offers DVD Audio decoding HDCD decoding and has a great picture to boot. This is my second progressive DVD player(JVC S65) and my third dvd player(Pioneer 414) The 5700 is the first unit that I feel like I got my monies worth. It has the right mix of features and performance. The switch between DVD Audio and other audio output formats is awkward, but not the end of the world. To me the features, performance and cost far out way the few weak spots of this unit.

Strength:

Picture quality, easy to use joystick remote, will handle most formats available.

Weakness:

None, especially for the price.

I think this is a great DVD player, especially for the price. I have had nothing but a good experience...the picture quality is great and the ease of use is tremendeous. The remote may not look expsensive but the joystick is so easy to use how could you complain? The Toshiba controls and on screen menus are very user friendly and really make the DVD viewing experience fun. This DVD player will handle just about every format on the market. Mike McGann in the February 2002 issue of Home Theater Magazine rated this DVD player very well (www.hometheatermag.com). His remarks are very telling and the article is worth a read. He sums up better than I could by saying "Since I am a product reviewer, a lot of people as me what products I like. The smarts ones ask a more revealing queastion:''What products did you buy?'' That''s a short list. One product you can add to it is the SD-5700. I''ve rarely seen a product combine this level of performance, features, and sheer value." I did a ton of research before I made my purchase and you will be hard pressed to find an overall better DVD player for even twice the price.

Strength:

features, price, good video and audio performance

Weakness:

manual can be clearer.

I was looking for a DVD player with good quality video but also doubles up as a descent quality CD player and this machine does it all and at a very reasonable price. Sound: The difference between sd4700 and sd5700 is not just only the silver box, but the HDCD decoding. HDCD decoding has improved the sound quality of conventional CD''''s and also allows me to play HDCD which supposedly has better soundstage, dynamic range and detail. I really belive it cause even my old CD collection has been brought back to life with the HDCD decoder and my old Yamaha disc changer sounded flat compared to it. I have yet to try DVD-A, but I suspect I will not be dissappointed. Video: This is my first DVD player, so it obviously is an improvement over VHS. I can only say the video quality is very good and I have no nick picky things to say about it. It is true the manual is a little confusing and the remote control can be better looking, but these are small weaknesses. I did my homework when purchasing this DVD player and could not find a player with the video, audio qualities with the features and connections available at this price.

Weakness:

The most terrible Manual I have even seen~ The most terrible remote I have even seen~ The most terrible user friendly design I have even seen for DVD-V and DVD-A playback Can''t auto dim in player~ get to dim from remote every time~~~~!@#$%^&*(

Well, fisrt of all, I have a question! Can any one tell the difference between 4700 and 5700? It seems the color is the only difference. Actually, I am kind of disappointed in this player~ I suppose this should be a very good player; however, the design is kind of awful. 1st, I have to switch between digital and analog out put for DVD-V and DVD-A playback, Otherwise, the sound will be totally incorrect. I think they can simple bypass the DVD-A to analog output without doing those meaningless switch. Like Panasonic DVD-A7, it automaticly bypass the DVD-A to 6ch output so end users don''t have to do those switch on both player and receiver. Also, I hate its dimmer! I have to dim it every time while I turn on the player. I just can''t simplely dim that in player''s setup. And the remote looks like the 9.95 remote in walmart. Also, the buildin decoder setup is terrible. According to its setup, The main speakers have to be full range, otehrwise, users have to connect main speakers to subwoofer bt line-in level. This will be some problem for those using sat/sub speakers system. However, it is unfair to say this is a bad player. Indeed, it sounds very good and the picture is good as well. The sound stage is actually very large and it sounds very warm. The picture is very clear as well. However, due to the poor user design, I can only give it 3 stars. Strength:

price, features, video and sound quality

Weakness:

none yet

I searched long and hard to find a DVD player that could double up as a descent CD player. I had a limited budget and the Toshiba 5700 won hands down. The unit has plentiful features, the plugs you need and a nice classy looking silver face. Sound quality: The HDCD chip really did improve the sound quality of my conventional CD''s and is noticeably improved over my old 5 disc Yamaha CD player. What they say about HDCD is true....improved soundstage, detail, clarity, dynamics. I haven''t tested DVD audio or HDCD CD''s, but I suspect it won''t let me down. Video quality: This is my first DVD player so it''s obviously an improvement over VHS. I''ve plugged in a few concert DVD''s and have no complaints, it gives me a clear and clean picture...I think the limitation right now is my TV. Read the reviews below to get a better idea of the video quality I don''t know why the others complain about minute things such as the remote control or other things. This player is only $250!!! Where else can you find another player of the same quality and feature loaded for that price?

Strength:

DVD-Audio, HDCD, Progressive scan, DVD"R" playback, bass management for 6 channel analog, price, and zoom

Weakness:

remote not backlit, no jog/shuttle on remote(SD3108 does), manual switching of 6 channel analog for DVD audio

This player is great! Haven''t used progressive scan as my 40" Mitsu. is not capable. Plan on getting 50" Pioneer Elite Plasma in future. DVD-Audio sounds great also. Purchased 3 discs so far for this. Bought the SD3108 when first out and still love it. (Especially remote) Use as bedroom player now. No problems with any formats or noise with the 5700. If you are looking for a progressive scan/DVD-Audio player I suggest you look at this one. If HDCD is of no concern the 4700 will be just as good.

Strength:

video,audio quality

Weakness:

no bass management for DVD-Audio

First of all after 8 calls to Toshiba customer service(absolutly useless 5 of the 8 people didnt even know what DVD-audio was)I finaly found out that the unit has no bass management for DVD-Audio.The 6 channel analog bass management only works with Dolby Digital so unless you have full range speakers your out of luck.second this is without doubt the poorest written owners manual ive ever encountered. The manual never mentions how to hookup or play DVD-Audio.Other than the manual and unbelievably bad customer service along with the occasional previously mentioned audio dropouts the unit is quite good.
