Strength:

It has all the features anyone could want. Toshiba has taken the market when it comes to DVD players. While Sony is not very far behind the picture on a Toshiba 540line horizontal resolution, they are still behind and more expencive. This DVD player playes the clearest picture with the best sound 24bit/192kHz.

Weakness:

Absolutely None.

This DVD Player has it all. Toshiba taken the lead in afordable quality DVD players.
The SD5700 beats out Sony's DVP-NS700P by a landslide.

None that I have encountered (knock on wood....OUCH)

Got this for Christmas so my wife could have my SD-4205 which has the 5 disc drawer. Wasn't sure if I wanted to go DVD-Audio or SACD. Read a lot of articles on the two formats, but ultimately DVD-A was much more afordable and the software out was more to my tastes.
Picture is crisp and clean. No bleeding of colors as on some players.
One problem that I have had, is remembering to switch the audio from bitstream to 5.1 analog to listen to DVD-A and visa versa. Put a movie in on New Years Eve for company to show off the system and forgot to switch the signal. Well after 5 minutes nobody was impressed including myself and then I saw that the Dolby Digital light wasn't on. I paused the movie, made the change to bitstream and then said
"You just heard the past, here is the future". I now have friends calling like I'm the local movie theater to come over and watch a movie.

Like George (below) I too have experienced extremely loud dangerous distortion blasting out of my speakers. I own the SD-4700, but the 4700/5700 are close enough in design that I feel I should be mentioning this problem here.

This is what happened..... I put a DVD movie in the tray, pressed the close button, and then hit the play button while the disc was loading. Perhaps I should have waited longer before pressing play (actually, it's not even necessary to press play), but under no circumstances should loud distortion blast out of my speakers -- especially since my receiver does support DTS.

I'm not going to have a $250 player damage my $3500 worth of speakers/receiver, so I have returned the Toshiba.

Strength:

Good value; excellent video quality in progressive mode.

Weakness:

Have not discovered any as of yet!

Although I've only been using this player for the past few weeks, I'm very impressed...

Video quality in progressive mode was flat-out fantastic; superb clarity with a nicely textured smoothness. Have had a # of different DVD players in my rig, and this, considering the price, is a great value.

Had tried the latest Sony player but was very disappointed; found the picture to be inordinately soft when using either the Sony 36 XBR WEGA or the RCA 38" 16 x 9 sets. I realize this may be a matter of equipment combinations and/or personal tastes, but I found the Toshiba superior in clarity, transparency, and depth in video mode.

DVD-A is still a review in progress due to lack of available software on my agenda! Did have Clapton's "Reptile" to give it a go, and was certainly impressed with aspects of the sound - for one, I heard background vocals DEEP in the mix that I never noticed before, and was pleasantly surprised with low-level detail...

Unit is a bit flimsy in build quality, but for under $300, what can one expect? As long as I can get the quality in the chip array, I can live with it Easy to use remote, nice front panel are definite +'s...

Hope to give a better review on the DVD-A soon, but till then, that picture sure is sweet!

Recommended.

Weakness:

Remote is nasty looking and cheap - Colors apear washed out

I took my new 5700 out of the box yesterday and hooked it up to my new KDP-57xbr2 HDTV. I went through the basic setup which was quick and painless. I popped Gladiator in and began to watch it. The first thing that I noticed was the picture was not centered on my TV, it was shifted up. The black bar at the top of the screen was 2" thick and the bar at the bottom was 3" Ignoring this obvious defect, I began to look at the actual picture. I kept thinking I was watching the DVD in interlaced mode. I am using Monster level 2 component cables(which aren't the greatest)but still felt like there was alot more distortion than there should be. Picture looked somewhat grainy. I borrowed my friends Sony 700P($300) and hooked it up. For starters the back bars were evenly sized on my screen and the picture just seemed sharper, less grainy. The colors on the sony appeared deeper and richer. Im not to impressed with the toshiba - Im gonna go get the sony.

Strength:

Progressive Scan, DVD Audio, HDCD

Weakness:

More of a preference, whether to select digital or analog for DVDA's not in 192/24 or in 96/24 surround.

Music

Using Polk's RM7600 including the PSW650 along with JVC's Ultra THX Receiver RX-DP10VBK this sounds beautiful. I have 3 DVD Audio Disks that kick. The Doors, Deep Purple, Eric Clapton. The SD5700 informs you of the sampling and bit rate for DVDA, which is great in determining if analog inputs are required for the recorded bit rate. However, with the set of cables I purchased, I am unable to tell the difference between analog and digital. The manual is very informative; this must be read a few times to digest.

Movies

I have watched Saving Private Ryan in DTS, Phantom Menace in two parts, (had to hit the can) when starting back up, I have not heard this so called crackling car radio noise / surging speakers. Own / watched many DVD’s, bit stream is the way to go if your receiver can handle it. I use two choices, bit stream and then analog for music. (HDCD and DVDA)

Personal

It's great to finally own an HDCD Player to listen to the re-mastered Kink collection. Future DVDA's of 192/24bit are on the way. MLP is great feature if you get into 6 channel audio surround at 96/24. I prefer stereo, although a surrealistic sound never hurt anyone! Along with a DTS Receiver and a decent TV this DVD Player is awesome. I know there are a few people who really get into MP3’s; this is a nice feature as well. Highly recommended!

Consumer alert!!

Regretfully, I have encountered severe problems with this model that I didn't know about at the time I posted my first review below. I realize the guidelines allow only one review, but I am compelled to post a second review.

1) Twice the unit has output horrible, loud distorted noise while in bitstream mode playing Dolby Digital material. It happens when the playback has been stopped and then continued. This is the type of noise it is said can damage speakers quickly. I hope my speakers haven't been damaged. I have never seen this problem before with either my Toshiba SD5109 or SD2109. This is a totally unacceptable defect.

2) In DVD-Audio 6-channel mode, 4 tracks of an 11 track recording of the Mahler 2nd symphony won't play at all.

3) There is a noticeable break between tracks. This is a problem especially when tracks are inserted in the middle of movements of a classical symphony. The Mahler 2nd for example has the 5th movement broken into 7 tracks. The music is supposed to continue uninterrupted. That doesn't happen.

I have tried two SD5700. Both show these defects. I tried a SD9200 which is similar and it worked fine.

I'm sorry to say I can no longer recommend this model. I will report back when and if Toshiba and/or Tweeter respond to my e-mail messages.

This is very unfortunate, because except for the problems noted the performance of this unit is excellent. The DVD-Audio sound is amazingly good. Two recommended DVD-Audio disks I have tried are the Mahler 2nd Symphony on Teldec and Emerson, Lake, and Palmer's "Brain Salad Surgery" on Rhino.

Strength:

Best bang for the buck!

Weakness:

None

MP3's do indeed work on the SD5700. However, the MP3's need to be on CD-R and not on CD-RW unless the MP3 has been recorded at a high enough rate.
As for the apparent drop outs, if you rewind and then go forward again, does it do it in the same place. If not, it could still be a layer change because the processor actaully reads ahead and tries to make the change as fast as possible by actually scanning ahead. Therefore, the layer change may appear to actually move depending on how the processor reads the disc and tries to compensate. If, however, this does seem possible in your case, try an unplug the player for 15 minutes and try in again. DVD players are notorious for causing EMI and for being affected by it.

Still the Best player for the money and beyond!

This is my 4th installment of the Toshiba 5700

It's been two weeks and there is a problem with the 5700. It's that slight pause. It's not the layer change. How do I know? If I rewind it back to the same scene the slight pause is gone. If it's the layer change, even if I rewind it back to that scene it will still do the (pause) same thing. I am sorry but I am contemplating on returning this unit. Even though I said before that its a back-up to my JVC, I think I have to return and exchange it or get a refund. I hope somebody who reads this review can explain what is wrong. I know there are a lot of reviews under me that have the same problem.

Strength:

Very good video and CD audio quality, plenty of output choices, well designed remote

Weakness:

MP3 Playback is unacceptable, customer service unresponsive

Just purchased this player the end of December and have liked everything except MP3 playback. Although DVD and CD playback are very good, if you plan on encoding your own MP3 disks LOOK ELSEWHERE! I tried several encoders, several CDR disks, and every setting I could find but still the MP3 playback is intolerable. There is an almost constant low-level muffled noise in the background of all tracks (it doesn't seriously bother my wife but I expect more from a $250 player). I tried for several days to contact Toshiba's customer service via email with no replies to my problem. After finding a professional review which listed the same MP3 playback problem in their test unit, this problem may well be a design flaw instead of an isolated issue. Because of this I would steer clear of this unit unless you have no intention of encoding MP3s. I have returned the unit for a full refund which was no problem with Etronics (they allow a 30 day satisfaction guarantee and gave me no hassles about the return).
