Strength:
Sound and vision.good looking unit
Weakness:
Display is cheap looking as is remote. It would be good if you could black out the display. This is my fourth dvd player and the best one so far.It is an excellent product for the money. The first thing i noticed was the sound qualitly had improved and bandwidth had increased over my old toshiba SD 2500. this was in the first minute of turning it on.I am refering to the Dolby Digital Opening that are on most dvd's, this one is of the rocks rolling down hill, the howling of the wind and the cry of the eagle. The sound is Yamaha,it surrounds you more, but the real suprise is the lower octaves that were missing in the toshiba. You can hear and feel the boulders roll down sides of the cliff face. The picture is also better then the toshiba in both standard and progressive mode. The difference between standard and progressive mode is not that big, but it is noticable with finer detail. cheap looking remote no DVi ouput " not necesary since I have no Plasma or HDTV" This DVD is a nice unit and even better for the price (159$ MRSP) Picture and audio quality are amazing. Movies never looket so good in my 27' panasonic "Tau" flat TV. Hook up this dvd whit your home theater and you will be satisfied whith the sound quality. It has no DVD audio or sacd but is more than ok for the price. Similar Products Used: sony dvps330 |

Strength:
- Excellent value for price - Excellent interlaced picture, - Very good CD audio, - Good media compatibility (DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, CD-R/RW) - Very good drive mechanism,
Weakness:
- Front panel display, too basic but with good contrast, This is my first DVD player. Actually I'm a newbie to HT. Currently, I have an ordinary Panasonic TV with a Sony Mini-component system. Therefore, can't comment on Progressive performance of this product nor it's multi-channel audio. However, the following are my observations of S540: The picture in interlaced video is excellent, very sharp and colorful. Two channel audio is very good on my stereo system. This player is both NTSC/PAL ProgScan capable, however, keep in mind that there is no 3:2 pulldown processing. The operation of unit is flawless, the built quality is of average quality, satisfactory for this price. The look of player is simple and classic, I really like it. The front panel display is too simple, sometimes it's hard to distinguish between 0 and 8!. Unfortunately the track/chapter number and elapsed time are too close together, showing a 7-digit display in form of TTH:MM:SS, without any space between track No. (TT) and elapsed time (H:MM:SS). The connections are satisfactory for this price category: - 1 Component Video Output Terminals - 1 S-Video Output Terminal - 1 Composite Video Output Terminal - 1 Optical and 1 Coaxial Digital Audio Output Terminals - 1 Dual Mixed 2-Channel Output Terminals - 1 SCART (RGB) Terminal for European models, As the player doesn't play DVD-A/SACD, there is no multi-channel output. Conclusion: Yamaha S540, in interlaced mode, is an excellent player for the money. In Progressive mode; ... I can't comment. If you are looking to use it in ProgScan mode, be careful, and try to see the picture before buying. IMHO, if you want decent ProgScan, INCREASE YOUR BUGDET and look somewhere else (players with "Faroudja de-interlacer" for example). Also note that this machine dose not have 3:2 pulldown processing.
