This problem with freezing up

I purchased the S700 it was fine. I moved it was in storage in its original box. Now its freezing up everytime I use it. Can this be fixed? Well I called Yamaha and received the royal treatment, (right!) BOHICA

Bend Over Here It Comes Again

Anyway now I have to send it to Austin. Maybe they can help
me, says Yamaha. I own other Yamaha products (DSP-A1)
and I am completly satified. However, I am not pleased with
Yamaha's response to this matter.

I originally bought the Pioneer Elite DV-05. In evaluating the Runco 5800 RPTV I was able to compare the Pioneer with the Yamaha S700. I then asked, based on what I saw, if I could take home the store's demo and really compare the two players. It confirmed what I saw at the store:
The Yamaha is _far_ superior at downconverting anamorphically enhanced DVDs on 4:3 monitors. The Pioneer looked softer with more artifacts. The Yamaha did a beautiful job of doing this downconverting. It also has better scanning options. I was surprised as I'm a big Pioneer Elite fan. I bought the Yamaha demo as a result of this comparison.

I should say that the Pioneer may be ever so slightly superior to the Yamaha when it doesn't have to downconvert but I'm going to have to spend much more time to see if its just my imagination. It's that close.

This player is a Panasonic unit with a Yamaha audio chip and a different face plate. Also since Yamaha used their own dts chip intead of the motorola version it has problems with some of the dts DVD's. The audio track will drop out on certain titles. One example is Dante's Peak (Ch.22) Switching chapters is another disapointment since it is very slow. If you want a quality player the SD9000 from Toshiba is a true find. I'm not anti-Yamaha. I own their DSP-A1 and their reciever line is incredible. I would just like them to put as much effort in to their DVD players as they do with their recievers..... dts...

Good all around machine, although has the same display and remote of the Denon and Panasonic models, also the new McIntosh has the same display too.I suspect that Panasonic also makes the guts for these players as well.

Purchased this unit at a discount due to open box. The unit had problems from the start (picture freeze, ect). I already assumed that this unit was a return anyway. So I sent it back for repair under the warranty. I got it back in less than 4 weeks with no more problems (factory said they replaced the optical pickup, and did a re-alignment). I beleave that for the little bit of hassle of sending it back for repair it was worth the $150 discount I got for buying it in open box condition.

Strength:

Superb picture and audio.

Weakness:

Slow to read if you are in a hurry.

This unit seems to give me no problems as mentioned earlier. I purchased the unit for 300.00 as a demo and maybe thats why I will rate this a 5 because it retails for 799 at other places. I hooked this up using the component video outs and this connection is far superior to svideo. Beautiful design and strong build quality makes this unit a steal for the price and I would strongly recommend this unit over the newer model (795) if you can get one.

Functionality

I bought this unit since the price was right and it would match my existing Yamaha reciever and CD changer. I had nothing but with problems with it. I took it back a little over a month after I bought it and got the Sony 550, which I have now had a few weeks with no complaints.

As soon as I got the unit, I borrowed a few DVDs from a friend. The first one I tried was Matrix. It locked up several times the first time I tried to play it. I tried ejecting it and putting it back in, then I got a "Cannot play this type of disc" error.

After I bought a dozen movies, I noticed I had that same "Cannot play this type of disc" problem with many of the other movies (Armegeddon, Titanic, Dances With Wolves, Appolo 13, Mummy). I had also rented "The Shining" and had a huge problem with pixelization.

Very disappointed....

I've been buying Yamaha components for over 10 years and I've never been disapointed. The DVD-S700 is by far the best DVD player. With it's user-friendly functions and superb picture and sound, this DVD player is hard to beat! You would not be dissapointed if you purchased this product. Check it Out.

contrary to all negative comments above, i have owned my yamaha 700 dvd player since november 1998 (yes ninety eight) and it has never had a problem. no artifacting, no digital smearing, no skipping, no freezing, no problems with rce encoding, no problems with seamless branching (e.g. abyss region 1), no pixellation, plays the matrix and all other 'problem' dvds perfectly, layer switching happens in an instant.
this model is based on a panasonic, also tweaked by denon. i chose the yamaha 'version' because of their a/v quality, as i was originally using the built in dolby digital decoder. note the s700 pre dates dts being used on dvd's, and so the decoder only supports DD 5.1.
i bought this dvd player when there were only fifteen region 2 dvd's available, and when the cheapest player available was £350. hence the £600 price tag. the star rating is therefore made in this context.

I bought my DVD-S700 when they first came onto the market. It was one of the first DVD players to have a DTS output as I own a Yamaha DSP-A1 with DTS capabilities and wanted to take full advantage of it. A year and a half later, I own over 130 DVD's, 18 of them being encoded with DTS tracks. I have also rented and borrowed several DVD's and have had problems with 3 out of the 300 movies that I have watched on my player. (American History X, Tommorrow Never Dies and The Saint.) That's a pretty damned good percentage. When I say problems, I mean MINOR digital artifacts that occur seldomely. There has been no problems whatsoever with audio.

The performance and features of this player are easily way above average and I would recommend it to anyone.
