The Yamaha s795 DVD player is my first player. I am totally new to DVD. So my thoughts may differ from everyone.
I have been patiently waiting for DVD for maybe a little over 2 years, I have seriously been researching DVD players for 10 months now and I have been waiting on the new Yamaha DVD player for 6 months. So I guess you can say I have tried to prepare myself for this purchase.

Setup - Easy once you have a mate with a bit of electronical experience :) , but I could of achieved it sooner or later. The instruction manual has lots of information to help you. Even setups for different equipment you might have. ie Dolby digital or pro logic etc... We had it up and running in about half an hour.

On screen Menu - Easy to navigate. Use the remote. Lots of options.

Remote - Seems fine to me, easy to use. I have read Yamaha have ucky remotes. I thought this was just fine. small and light. I love it. ( can you tell )

Picture - Quite good. ( as far as I can tell ) DVD picture quality. First movie I tried was R1 Ronin, and it was awesome. We where getting used to the sound, because I only have a prologic system, but it was cool. We watched Ronin in Widescreen, my first major experience with it. It was cool. The picture quality seemed excellent. I love this movie.

Sound - As I said I have a pro logic system, and I am unable to use the 5.1 sound, but the downconversion of 5.1 to pro logic seems to be fine. We ran a VHS tape of Top Gun, and compared it to the DVD version. DVD sound was richer & there seemed to be more definition and range between the channels. VHS sounded tinner, ( BTW before listening to the DVD version I thought the VHS was awesome. :)

Layer changes : seemed to be ok. Slight pause for about half a sec, but it seems to vary from movie to movie. Aliens Se was very brief as was James Bond TND se.

Glitches : Can't seem to find any yet, ( touch Wood ), I only have 16 discs though and they are all of the recommended Demo discs, except maybe for This is spinal Tap se :) oh and my fiance' copy of "My best friends wedding". J

Overall : It seems to be a solid player. Easy to use. Fast disc access, great picture, and terrific sound. I will point out however ( once again ) that I am very new to the home theatre crowd, and even newer to DVD, so others may have more information to give, but I have read many reviews of other players over the 12 months that I have been researching them and I have found no faults that other reviews seem to mention.

I give it 5 Stars because it lives up to all my expectations that I had for it. It doesn't disappoint. :)

All will be revealed in time I guess. Stay tuned.

BTW My system is a Yamaha component system, the receiver is an RV 702 I think. With 5 speaker surround twin tape deck, and 5 carosel CD player.

Regards

AXE

I purchased the Yamaha S795 after several home auditions of comparably priced (approximately $500 to $1000) players from Sony, Pioneer Elite and JVC. The Yamaha appeared to be the best value of the lot (for my purposes at least). I picked it up new for $650 near Detroit, and have had no complaints whatsoever.
The machine offers a solid complement of features; it also had a better than average picture when compared to the Sony and JVC machines. The Pioneer may have been a touch better; however, this is still an evolving technology, and I'm not willing to pay $1,000 for micro-improvements at this juncture.

The Yamaha has component video outs, Coax, Optical, DTS, on-board Dolby Digital--all the things you expect at this price point. The onscreen menus are slightly underwhelming, but not too bad, overall. I've been running the Coaxial outs to a Yamaha 995 receiver, and have achieved some surprisingly good results from my old Magnavox TV.

Dances With Wolves (DTS) and Born on the Fourth of July are absolutely incredible viewing experiences in this format. DTS and Dolby Digital, to me, are very close based upon my viewings, but they are both so much better than any forerunner encoding that I am familiar with.

The ergonomics of the remote control are somewhat poor (especially in the dark), but this is a rather minor concern.

I advise shopping carefully for DVD players in this price range. My experience with the Sony 550 machine included the same lip-sync problem as that was described by reviewers of that machine, and the JVC machine's picture seemed to flutter somewhat. I have also experienced trouble with several PC-based DVD-ROM drives, also. Perhaps this format is still working out the kinks, but in the interim, be sure to kick the tires. I spent a month chasing down the Yamaha, and I'm glad I did.

Sound/Picture: 4 1/2 Stars (most heavily weighted)
Ergonomics: 3 Stars

Total: 4 to 4 1/4 stars--a solid performer with no flaws

Strength:

Best picture quality in sub1500$ DVD's, Plays CD's as good
as any Hi-End CD players. S-VHS out to an S-VHS JVC
permits me to copy DVD's to S-VHS.

Weakness:

Frankly, NONE.

At first, i didnt know what to expect.
I tried it at the store, picture was exellent with
no aliasing and dot-run, sound was crisp and clear.

At home, coupled with my Yamaha RX-395 and home made
speakers, it really shined. I wached the Matrix again
amd i was not dissapointed. Image is second to none.

As for sound... I tried many CD's and all played much better than my CD-495 so i sold it! I went back to my dealer
and tried it with a SimAudio i-5080 and Paradigm Studio 60's
and wow, it really plays good! I compared it to a CD4-SE
and frankly, they were very similar in sound quality.
Yamaha'a ProBit 24Bit DAC is up to the task. I didnt
experience a bass problem but you have to check how it is
setup, it has built in crossovers that are triky to find.
